The UCLA Gymnastics team looks to bounce back from their loss at Utah last week with a quick turnaround against UC Berkeley's womens gymnastics team (because they actually have a mens team, grr) tonight at 6pm. The meet will be televised live on Pac-12 Networks.
UCLA (1-2) is currently ranked #9 in the country, down a spot from last week, with an average score of 196.308. UC Berkeley is ranked 22, with an average score of 194.875.
UC Berkeley (3-4, 0-3 in Pac-12) are coming into this meet on a three meet losing streak, falling to Arizona State, Utah and Denver in successive weeks. Their best team score so far is 196.275 against Utah. The gymnasts to watch for UC Berkeley are Senior Alicia Asturias and Freshman Charlie Owens, who compete in the all-around for the Bears. Also watch for Serena Leong, who was the Pac-12 freshman of the year last season.
Should UCLA win? Yes. Handily. UC Berkeley seems to compete at the level of their competition (their best meet has been against Utah, and they did decently against Arizona State) so they'll bring their A game, but UC Berkeley is young, inexperienced, and their routines aren't up to that high level. Of course, I can make the same comments about UCLA - we can't score in the 9.7s and 9.8's - we need to be in the high 9.8s to 9.9s consistently to make a serious run for a 7th NCAA title this year.
Enjoy this meet. Beat the bears.
