The UCLA men's volleyball team is in Honolulu this week to participate in the 20th Outrigger Volleyball Invitational. The Bruins have played in the tournament 13 times previously with 8 tournament wins and a 32-6 all-time record. UCLA is currently the three-time defending tourney champions.
The #7 ranked Bruins (0-1) open play today with a match against #11 Penn State at 6 PM PST. Penn State returns five starters from a team that finished 23-8 last year, won another EIVA title, and qualified for the NCAA tournament. It will be a tough matchup for the Bruins, particularly since the Bruins were subpar defensively against Stanford last week and need to improve substantially to slow down the Penn State attack.
UCLA will play #12 Ohio State on Friday at 6 PM PST and will close the tournament with a match against the tournament hosts #14 Hawai'i on Saturday at 9 PM PST. According to the official UCLA preview, live streaming is available here, and live audio will be available here.
These are the final three matches the Bruins will play before MPSF matches begin next week, so it's critically important that Coach Speraw's squad finds more fluidity in attack and tightens up the defense. This team has a ton of talent; with good coaching, the Bruins have a great chance of getting back to the NCAA tournament.
