After beating Northridge midweek and then losing 2 out of 3 at home to Cal Poly (2-2 for the week), UCLA dropped to #19 from #12. Meanwhile, Cal Poly jumped from #22 to #13 after their 3-1 week.
Oregon State dropped from #2 to #4, after also going 2-2 on the week. Oregon State beat Pacific and Indiana, and lost to Nebraska and Michigan State, all in Arizona.
Fullerton dropped from #3 to #5, after also going 2-2 on the week. Fullerton got whomped at $C on Tuesday and then lost in 19 innings at home to USF on Friday, before beating the Dons on Saturday and Sunday.
North Carolina State, which is UCLA's opponent next Saturday in North Carolina, remained at #6, after a 5-0 week. NC State won midweek games against Elon and North Carolina A&T, and then swept Appalachian State at home. Their AD may be friends with Doughnut, and sought scheduling tips after seeing the UCLA home non-conference record in men's basketball.
Oregon jumped from #11 to #7. The Ducks are undefeated at 7-0, including 4 wins last week on the road (Monday game at Hawaii, weekend sweep at Loyola Marymount).
I don't quite get the logic of dropping 7 spots when you lose 2 games to the #13 team, while a team that loses 2 games to unranked teams (Oregon State) and another team that loses 2 games to unranked teams (Fullerton) drop 2 spots each.
The solution must be to win series, and let the polls take care of themselves. Works for me.
Next up for the Bruins is a home game tomorrow night against UCSB, and then a trip to North Carolina for the Notre Dame Classic. These will be the first games away from Jackie Robinson Stadium.
Go Bruins !!
