Hiring Decisions by a Lazy Bureaucrat

Following on DC's excellent commentary on our AD's "win" with the #HoosierLoser, I have the following additional thoughts.

Doughnut epitomizes the bureaucratic mindset- rational but lazy. It is in Doughnut's selfish best interest to take the easiest route possible whenever there are no negative consequences.

The fans think it is time for a new football coach after seeing a couple of years of the program with Dorrell? Don’t pull the plug, even though the mistake is obvious, because that would mean having to take time to find a new hire. Finally, after enough debacles, hire a new coach but don’t act like a leader and actually pick one person. Try to please all constituencies by hiring one (CRN) but forcing your hire to take on another possible candidate for the HC job (Walker). Then don’t pull the plug again, because that would mean having to take time to find a new hire. Finally, after enough debacles, hire a new coach by single threading (Peterson) instead of doing a rational search, and then luck into Mora when the single thread approach doesn't work.

The fans think it is time for a new basketball coach as Howland’s program unravels? Don’t pull the plug, because that would mean having to take time to find a new hire. Finally, after enough debacles, hire a new coach by single threading (TIARA) despite other obvious candidates. Don’t do a competent background check, and offer him an impossible to refuse contract so that you won’t have to continue to expend effort on a real search.

Here is one reason we have this litany of failed searches. Doughnut has no incentive to behave differently. There is nothing in his contract which requires him to meet any objective standards when it comes to attendance (which is impacted at least indirectly by the quality of his hires), financial performance (which is impacted directly by any increase or decrease in attendance), or regular season or postseason performance in football or basketball (which is impacted only marginally by the small impact of these sports in the director’s cup standings).

If Doughnut takes the time to do a real search, and uncovers a diamond in the rough who will put either football or basketball in great standing for years to come, Doughnut gets no reward. Mora may turn out to be that diamond in the rough. It is still too early to tell. But if he is, Doughnut will not get any bonus for this hire- it is not a factor in his compensation. If Doughnut does a half-assed search, and uncovers an unqualified candidate like Dorrell or a despicable candidate like TIARA, Doughnut gets no penalty- it is not a factor in his compensation.

The meritorious employee will do what is right for his employer, even if doing right does not match up exactly with his compensation program. Doughnut is clearly not that meritorious employee. He is a career bureaucrat, who will do exactly what is required under his compensation program, nothing more and nothing less.

The effect is our suffering, but the cause is Block’s neglect. Block was a signatory to Doughnut’s contract, pursuant to which there are no negative consequences to Doughnut’s mismanagement. Doughnut is doing what he is asked to do- nothing.
