Don't look for the Bruins in Pasadena at the end of spring practice.
I don't know if the unavailability of the Rose Bowl caught Morgan Center by surprise or if this was planned intentionally. I'd suspect the former. But either way, the more I think about it, the more I like this move. So does Coach Mora who as always is his program's biggest and best marketer:
Not only does the StubHub Center provide us with a first-class facility to showcase UCLA Football, it is located in an area that allows us to expand our footprint in the Los Angeles market. We practice in Westwood, play our games in Pasadena and train during the summer in San Bernardino. This Showcase is a great opportunity for our fans down south to watch the Bruins play in their own backyard.
There are some real advantages to playing the Spring Game in Carson. Last year's Spring Game drew around 20,000 fans, and with this year's returning squad, we ought to expect an even bigger turnout this April. But even with a bigger crowd, the Rose Bowl would still look pretty empty for the game. But 20K+ Bruins fans will nearly fill the StubHub Center and create a much better environment and a better look on TV.
Also, the strategic aspect of playing the game on the edge of south central is pretty cool. The Spring Game will give U.C.L.A. a chance to play right in the backyard of a certain school in South-Central Los Angeles and stamp a bigger Bruin bear paw in an area where the Bruins are already out-recruiting the trogans. I have this mental picture of a map of the Southland with Bruin flags waving over our University on the westside, in Pasadena to the NE, way out east in San Bernadino, and now to the south over Carson. #WRDOTT! (We Really Do Own This Town!).
Spring football begins next Tuesday. Look for the return of Spaulding Report to BN as we watch the team go through spring workouts and look forward to a potential blockbuster season.
The finale of spring football will be held on Saturday April 26. Doors will open at 3pm and fans will have a chance to meet and get autographs from the Bruins football players as well as some of the Olympic sport athletes. The football scrimmage will begin at 5pm and will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks. UCLA students get in free - yes! - and tickets to the public are $5 in advance and $10 at the venue, and can be bought through the Official Site or at CTO.
For those who don't know (like me, until Google), the StubHub Center includes the 27,000 capacity soccer field where the LA Galaxy and Chivas LA play. The Center also includes a tennis facility, a track and field facility, and an indoor velodrome (!).
