The Bruins dropped 3 spots in today's Baseball America top 25 poll. The Bruins went 2-2 on the week, all at home. UCLA beat Long Beach State 2-1 on Tuesday, then dropped 2 out of 3 at home to Arizona State. It is unusual, to say the least, that the Bruins could score 5 runs on Saturday and 5 runs on Sunday, and lose both games.
Other West Coast teams, and other teams of interest-
Cal Poly held steady at #5, after sweeping UC Davis in conference play at home.
Oregon State held steady at #6, after winning 2 out of 3 on the road at Arizona.
Houston, which beat UCLA earlier this season in a single game at Jackie Robinson Stadium, jumped from #17 to #10. So the loss may not hurt as much for UCLA's postseason seeding.
Washington, which was previously not ranked, jumped into the polls at #25. The Huskies are riding a 10 game winning streak, including a 3 game sweep last week at $C.
UCSB dropped from #15 to #17, after a 2-2 week. The Gauchos won a midweek game at Fresno State, and then lost 2 out of 3 at home in a conference series against Hawaii. UCSB beat UCLA earlier this season in a midweek game at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
Cal State Fullerton fell from #9 to #18, after dropping 2 out of 3 on the road at Wichita State.
Oregon fell from #11 to #19, after a 2-3 week, which included a split on the road against San Francisco and dropping 2 out of 3 at Stanford.
NC State dropped out of the top 25. This is important because it diminishes the impact of UCLA's victory against the Wolfpack in Cary, NC.
There are 7 West Coast teams ahead of UCLA at the moment in the polls. Fortunately, UCLA plays at least one game against all of them in the coming weeks except Cal Poly. So the Bruins will not have to depend on the kindness of strangers in terms of their postseason destiny.
Go Bruins !!
