UCLA Gymnastics at Michigan and Utah - Preview and Open Thread

The #8 (YES. We finally moved up!) UCLA Gymnastics team travels to Ann Arbor to take on the #7 Michigan Wolverines and the #6 Utah Utes for a top 10 showdown. The video stream will be available here but unfortunately, you must pay, and live stats are available here.

UCLA's RQS has jumped up to 196.740 after last week's 197.500 against Arizona. They are ranked 11th in the vault, 6th in the uneven bars, 11th on the balance beam, and 6th on the floor.

In this week's honors, Olivia Courtney was named Pac-12 gymnast of the week after scoring a 39.50 in the all-around and Samantha Peszek was named Pac-12 specialist of the week with 3 9.90's in her three events last week as they destroyed Arizona and won their events. Last week's meet was just great overall, and hopefully a good bump into this week's meet.

Looking at this week's meet, it will be tough. Utah is currently ranked 6th in the country, with an RQS of 197.105 (and the Bruins already lost to Utah this year, but it cannot be worse than that meet, as we scored a terrible 195.875) and are ranked 3rd in the bars, 2nd on the vault, and 2nd on the floor. Their ONLY weakness is on the beam, where they are ranked 23rd and their average score is below 49. Georgia Dabritz is their gymnast to watch (especially on bars, where she does not use grips, and is ranked 3rd in the country on bars) and I would also keep an eye out for Tory Wilson.

Michigan comes into this meet ranked 7th, with an RQS of 196.795. They are ranked 6th on the vault, 8th in the uneven bars, 14th on the beam, and 6th on the floor. They've dominated most of their competition this year... until it came to quality opponents such as Alabama, but they're undefeated in the Big 10. According to the website, this is the Bruins first meet since 2005 in Michigan. Michigan is experienced, led by four seniors, notable Joanna Sampson, so the Bruins cannot take this meet lightly.

This meet will be fantastic, even though we cannot watch it. I want the Bruins to reach 197 again, go 24 for 24, 9.8 and above. Let's go.

Go Bruins.
