UC Berkeley Hires Cuonzo Martin

USA TODAY Sports

Get ready for a new sheriff in town up in Berkeley. According to ESPN, Cuonzo Marin has accepted the Cal Basketball head coaching position, replacing retiring coach Mike Montgomery.

Martin went 63-41 in three seasons at Tennessee, including a 24-13 mark and NCAA regional semifinal appearance this season. Earlier this month, Martin said he intended to stay at Tennessee. To that end, Vols athletic director Dave Hart went about trying to rework the coach's contract, which was set to run through the end of the 2015-16 season. Martin also interviewed at Marquette before withdrawing his name from consideration. That job went to Duke assistant Steve Wojciechowski.

Martin hasn't been without controversy. Apparently, 36,000 Vol fans signed an online petition requesting return of Bruce Pearl.

The immediate concern will be whether Martin can recruit on the West Coast. He sounds like a Midwest guy. Of course some of us Bruins will you be pissed if Tennessee hires Gregg Marshall?
