Bumped. GO BRUINS. - BN Eds.
UCLA (18-12) dropped out of the Baseball America top 25 after dropping last weekend's away-home-away series against unranked Long Beach State, but have the opportunity to make a statement tonight as they return to the site of last year's SuperRegional victory to take on #18 Cal State Fullerton (16-11).
Grant Dyer will take the mound for the Bruins, as he has for every midweek game. UCLA is currently 4-2 in midweek games. Dyer's ERA of 2.13 is the lowest of any of UCLA's 4 starting pitchers. Dyer most recent outing was 1 inning of scoreless relief with only 11 pitches in the Saturday loss to Long Beach State. In his most recent start, Dyer gave up 2 earned runs in 5.2 innings to get the win over Loyola Marymount. He has won his last 3 starts. The average score for the 6 midweek games is 4-3, which is a testament to Dyer's ability to consistently hold opponents down while also working effectively without a ton of run support.
Cal State Fullerton has not named their starting pitcher. The Titan rotation has been shuffled due to an injury to expected #2 starter Justin Garza, so others have had to move up. Fullerton has only played 3 midweek games, with a record of 1-2. Their last midweek game was 3 weeks ago. The Fullerton starting pitcher that day was Koby Gauna. He is 1-1, with a 1.51 ERA in 13 games, with a single starting nod. Gauna threw 5 pitches on Sunday in 0.1 innings, and 21 pitches on Friday in 1.2 innings. So he could be a reasonable choice to get the start tonight. Time will tell.
The last time UCLA played at Goodwin Field was their SuperRegional victory on the way to Omaha last season. Hopefully, they can get some momentum behind Dyer, before returning to conference play this weekend.
