The Bruins acquitted themselves well on Friday night, taking on the #2-ranked Oregon State Beavers in Corvallis and actually led going into the bottom of the sixth, before the Beavers finally pegged the Bruins back to pick up a 4-2 win. James Kaprielian (7.2 IP, 4 ER, 4 K, 6 BB, 6 H) put together a solid six innings before the Beavers finally caught up to the two-run lead UCLA built in the top of the third through a Ty Moore (1-4, 1 H, 2 RBI) two-run double off of Oregon State ace Ben Wetzler (8.0 IP, 2 ER, 8 K, 0 BB, 8 H). But when Kaprielian got into trouble, he couldn't work his way out of it, with the Beavers finally putting themselves in the lead for good in the bottom of the eighth.
So far this year, on the road, the Bruins have always come out strongest in the opening game, only to meekly roll over and surrender in the following two. For most of the season, that meant UCLA usually came away with at least one road win, but if our road struggles are any indication, tonight and tomorrow could be a long pair of games for the Bruins, especially against the #2-ranked team in the nation. It's Saturday, so UCLA will send normal Saturday starter Grant Watson (4-7, 3.81 ERA) to the hill to face off against OSU's sophomore right-hander Andrew Moore (4-3, 2.81 ERA), who is outperforming Watson by a full run in the ERA duel. We'll see if Watson can find some magic in Corvallis, but if you're a betting man, don't put much on the Bruins.
