President Obama hosted the Seahawks. And check out his quote about Cheaty Petey. The offending passage is in the 5th paragraph from the end.
"It's pretty clear that Coach Carroll does things the right way."
I am not sure whether the punch had been spiked when the President spoke these words. He sounds just like Bill Plaschke did back in the day when Petey's program was busy cheating (according to the NCAA) on the other side of the town. Remember this gem from Plaschke in an article dated April 26, 2006:
Carroll has worked hard to build that rare dynasty that follows the rules.
Plaschke had to take all that back after Petey was exposed few years later. It's not hard to look up about the recent Cheatey Petey history of Southern Cal. But here is what Cheaty Petey said about himself, in reference to his own dubious actions. Carroll's quote about the sanctions imposed after he flew the coop. And this quote was from less than three months ago.
"Had we known, I would like to think we would do the right thing..."
So even Petey has his doubts. "I would like to think we would do the right thing" is way more ambigous than "Carroll does things the right way."
I don't know if this says more about the standards for "pretty clear" in Washington these days, or if it says more about the power of a jersey to turn an intelligent person's mind to mush. But, in any event, the notion that "Coach Carroll" could ever be seen as doing things the right way is beyond the pale.
