Official Game Preview | Game Notes

On the second day of the Aggie Classic, UCLA won both ends of its doubleheader, starting with a narrow 6-5 win over Wichita State and ending with a relatively comfortable 7-3 victory against Texas A&M.

The Bruins played better than they did on the opening day of the tournament, especially at the plate. Sophomore hurler Johanna Grauer struggled against Wichita State, allowing 5 runs on 11 hits and 4 walks in 7 innings. However, UCLA's batters came to her rescue.

Mysha Sataraka pounded out three hits and drove in five runs, with three of those runs coming on her first homer of the season. Sataraka's third inning blast gave the Bruins a three run advantage, but the lead was gone by the next frame. UCLA came back to push another run across in the fifth, and to Grauer's credit, she shut down the Shockers over the final three innings. Grauer didn't make it easy, but she got the job done.

The Bruins looked stronger in the nightcap against the Aggies. Selina Ta'amilo had a strong outing in the circle, holding the Aggies to six hits and one earned run. UCLA's offense put up seven runs in the first five innings, with Mysha Sataraka again leading the way with her second homer of the day and three more RBI.

Sataraka finished the day with five hits in five at-bats, with two home runs and eight runs batted in. Sophomore Madeline Jelenicki added four hits over the two games, giving the Bruins a deadly combination in the middle of the lineup.

However, the real star of the day was Ta'amilo. The Bruins desperately need a pitcher that can take some of the pressure off their hitters, and Ta'amilo did just that.

Since it's a getaway day for the Bruins, they'll finish the tournament today with an early morning game against Colorado State. I suspect Johanna Grauer will get the start, and if so, it will be a great chance for her to improve upon her performances from the first two days of the tourney.

UCLA Tournament Preview | Triton Invitational Tournament Information

The top-ranked Bruins took care of business on Day 1 of the Triton Invitational. In their tournament opener, the Bruins trounced Sonoma State 17-1 with 11 different players scoring goals. In its second game of the day, UCLA outscored #16 Loyola Marymount 14-7 with a hat trick from senior India Forster and a brace of goals from both junior Ashley Zwirner and senior Charlotte Pratt.

The wins advance the Bruins to a tournament semifinal against 7th-ranked UC Davis this morning. The winner will move on to the final to face the winner of the other semifinal between #5 Arizona State and #2 Southern Cal. Today's action represents a genuine step up in quality of opponent for UCLA this season. At the end of the day, we'll have a much better idea of how far along Coach Brooks is in developing his 2016 squad.
