A Time to Say Goodbye

I've referred to the Byrds' Turn, Turn, Turn a couple of times over the past few years, and I'm returning to it again today. The first three lines go this way:

To everything (turn, turn, turn)

There is a season (turn, turn, turn)

And a time to every purpose under heaven

It is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard, and as I think of those lines, I think of Bruins Nation. Despite all the posts I've written, Bruins Nation has given me much more than I can ever repay. I have made friendships that will last a lifetime. And if that were not enough, I have admired the fresh ideas and untiring dedication of contributors.

But I want to say more, so I will tell a personal story. Earlier today, my wife and I went out to our favorite coffee store. After we ordered our drinks, and while I was waiting for mine to be made, my wife went outside to find a table. When I looked for her on the patio, all the tables looked the same, but only one was my "home table," and as I thought about it, it occurred to me I could put it in a larger context.

I've known for some 35 years that my wife is the anchor that gets me through all kinds of hard times. But when I thought of that table — just a wrought iron table and chairs like the others on the patio — it occurred to me that wherever she is, is where my home is. Now, I sure as hell don't want to be silly enough to say Bruins Nation comes even remotely close to a family; it doesn't. However, it is where we meet online to talk about a place we love (even if it's sometimes in angry tones), and I think that's profoundly valuable.

But that said, I'm not comfortable with the current direction of Bruins Nation. (I'm not going to dwell on the differences because that would turn this post into a debating forum.) I will still probably make comments, and I may even return to writing posts someday, but that time isn't now.

In the meantime, there are too many people to thank, so I'll just mention two: gbruin and uclaluv. I'm a better person because of my friendship with them.

So, that's it except to echo the words of Bob Hope: Thanks for the memories, everyone.

And my best wishes — bruinfollower
