It's Time to Do It Again
That was disgusting.
And, the streak continues.
That's right, Washington State has won three consecutive games at the Rose Bowl.
They've also beaten the Bruins 8 out of the last 11 times.
UCLA has been downright owned by Washington-freaking-State for a little more than a decade.
So, we've been here before - all too often. But, even though the opportunity was squandered, something good actually happen once when we lost to Washington State. Remember this guy?

Almost four years ago, we witnessed the last game that Bob Toledo ever coached for UCLA. It was a 27-48 loss to Washington State at the Rose Bowl on December 7, 2002. Two days later, Toledo was dismissed, and this article appeared in the campus newspaper:
"I felt a change in leadership was necessary," said first-year UCLA athletic director Dan Guerrero, addressing the media Monday. ...
"I did not want to create a situation where going into next year the first transgression that one of our kids may have, or the first bad call a coach would make, would dredge up some really negative things in this program," Guerrero added. "Our student-athletes didn't deserve that." ...
"We want every one of those games to be competitive," Guerrero said. "What is important in the last two games... is that our players were prepared and played hard and what that shows is the gap between our program and those two programs that exist. We need to close that gap." ...
"The tough part of this whole thing was it was Bob Toledo, and he is a good man," Guerrero said.
"We want to have a national caliber program here, certainly top 25 every year," he added.
According to another report:
At the time, I was pretty happy with Dan Guerrero. He made the right decision. He knew that, despite the fact that Toledo was a nice man, UCLA had higher goals, and a change in leadership was required to attain them.
Dear Mr. Guerrero: it's time to do it again.
As we all know, on this day, October 28, 2006, Karl Dorrell's Bruins lost 15-37 to Washington State at the Rose Bowl.

As in 2002, this should be our head football coach's last game at UCLA.
Mr. Guerrero, please. We don't need to wait for KD to match Toledo by losing his fourth straight game to Southern Cal before making a change. You must be seeing the same things we are. Do the right thing, just as you did once before.
Consider this your post-game thread.

Obejctively,
In the first half on offense, we never really got started, and in the red-zone, we never finished and had to settle for field goals. Cowan is only adequate. He can develop some rhythm on occasion, but the talent around him doesn't seem to be enough. (We certainly don't have anything close to a Drew Olsen this year.)
On defense, the team made a good effort, but when you look at how our talent matched up, WSU had equal or better stuff. For example, Van is too small to cover one-on-one. He usually finds himself in a mismatch against a taller player. It is inevitable that he will lose the battle. I'm not picking on Van, but he is only typical of the kinds of problems that UCLA has in talent (or lack thereof).
I actually thought that Dorrell made a better effort as a sideline coach in this game. He actually seemed to be personally involved in the game decisions, and his interaction with the players was more visible.
Is Dorrell the best coach that UCLA could get? No, but with the current talent pool and against the PAC-10 which seems to have parity across the conference (with the exception of Stanford, where the shelf is empty, and SC which this year has immature but superior talent ), UCLA is a mediocre team getting mediocre results. If you fire Dorrell at this point, don't expect anything much better to happen. We have a mediocre team and a mediocre coach, and (surpise!), we're getting mediocre results.

Obviously
No UCLA football fan in his right mind thinks that this team will magically turn it around this year or even next year with a new head coach. The goal is to find someone who can eventually make UCLA a powerhouse football program. Obviously that takes time and the improvement won't come right away. There is no quick fix.
Karl Dorrell is not the person who can eventually turn UCLA into a consistent winner. That's why he should be fired as soon as possible. The sooner we get the rebuilding process under way the better. The longer we wait to pull the plug the longer it will take UCLA to have any sort of chance at being good in football.

Well
And I have to say I was the most calm person (seriosly) in the UCLA crowd. Pretty much everyone had a lot ... of uhm ... nice things to say about KD.
From the tv shots of the Rose Bowl it was pretty clear how the Bruin Nation feels about KD.
The question is how long will this American water boarding torture er I mean having to watch UCLA football with KD in charge will continue.
Should be another interesting week.
I am not even upset anymore.
Thanks for putting this up M.

Dan Guerrero Can Be The Best AD Ever
Let's be positive about DG and give him the chance to be great!
by DumpDorrell on Oct 28, 2006 9:28 PM PDT 0 recs
DG
We need to be positive about him.
I think people make the common mistake of thinking KD was DG's hire.
He wasn't.
KD was one of the three finalists based on a search conducted by Donahue reject Bob Field (because DG was focused on hoops). Fields came up with Riley, Robinson, and KD.
And DG wanted Riley out of those 3, which was the right choice (out of those 3).
But it was Carnesale and Vice Chancellor Blackmun who wanted KD. They were impressed with KD evoking memories of Jackie Robinson and Arthur Ashe.
KD was Carnesale's social statement. And DG being the new guy on the block had to go with Carnesale.
This time I think DG is looking for the right opportunity and wants to give KD all the chances he gets for PC reasons.
But KD is such a douchebag that he will blow it. He looks scared and lost.
The key is to get the message across that KD is a worthless piece of sh!t even if he beats a over-rated Southern California football team.
But we need to keep the chatter up. Because it helps DG.
Now only if the students can put together a protest infront of Morgan Center, it will help DG out a lot.

What did we expect?
I'm new to BN and I'm a long time reader - you guys do a great job and are loyal and passionate - everything a sports program (college or pro) would want from its fans.
You cheer when we win, but you make comments that are supportive even when we lose. You stood by Howland last year in the beginning, and so did I. You could tell despite the losses that he was building a program and instiling toughness and discipline that was evaporated by Lavin.
But its really clear to me that 4 years ago when Guerrero hired Dorrell he took a big risk, and that risk has backfired
KD is a good team guy - he'll go out and do what he's told and execute. But he doesn't have the toughness (read: meanness at times) to be a true leader. His expressionless flat demeanor is a drawback in the college level. How are his pupils to feel his passion for the game if he himself can't communicate it? Neither does he innovate or develop his players.
KD has been coasting for 4 years now - he has delivered consistent mediocrity. The talent pipeline overall is drying up for UCLA and we are surrendering prospects we had a good shot at now to SC, and Cal. Would you want to go to UCLA now as a highly rated prospect? Probably not. How many 5-star prospects other than a Mormon mission transfer have we landed in 3 years since he's been here? How many have Cal or SC? You can say the deck is stacked against him, but that's bs - football is a tough game, people kick you until you get back up and fight back and prove yourself - a facsimile for life. That's how program turnarounds happen. Others have done so, why not here at UCLA?
KD is NOT a good manager of games either - consistently dumb game management mistakes are made often at the worst times. OC's and DC's are blamed, run out of town. But really, who is really responsible?
This man was a reach when he was hired - overpromoted beyond his experience (WR coach? Not even an OC/DC?) for a major football program.
We are ultimately held back by our administration and our measly pay packages. If Cal can pay Tedford up near a million a year with incentives, redo their stadium, and build a new practice facility - I ask you why UCLA with its $2 billion endowment goal can't. (I think its 2 bil, someone double check if I'm wrong, but I'm not far off).
Guys and gals, face facts and the truth. UCLA FB is an also-ran in the Pac-10 now. A middling mediocre undsteady program that is a couple of bad breaks (injuries, transfers, suspensions) away from a lower-tier team.
In college it all comes down to the coach. He sets the tone for everything. I'm a Niners fan and you can see what Mike Nolan (pro example albeit) is doing in SF vs. what Donahue and Erickson did. Just watching a game, yes they suck, you can see they are developing and maturing gradually slowly.
We haven't developed a program in 4 years under Dorrell. We haven't learned from our mistakes. Our recruiting talent is dwindling vs. SC/Cal. Our coaches aren't doing the best job of developing talent for the next level which further entices recruits to come in a virtuous cycle.
Its time to cut the cord and bring in a coach that is a program builder. My vote (if he'll have us) is Butch Davis. See the implosion of Miami without him? Just someone who is tough, but fair and gains the respect of many of the spoiled, me-first high-school athletes of today. Toughness, grit, passion, but fairness and intelligence. Someone we can all respect win or lose. The results will follow - we all deep down know this.

Thanks
We weren't a national championship contender in football, but we could expect to be a regional power and contend for a PAC-10 championship almost every year.
Then Pete Carroll happened and came in like a snake oil salesman and charmed, cheated, lied, etc. He does all these things (Reggie Bush payments, LenDale White, Dwayne Jarrett's crime blotter?). Yet he has won, and marginalized our program in the process.
We need a response. Just as Tressel brought back Ohio St. after John Cooper stagnated and lost to Michigan. We need our own Jim Tressel.
I don't think just plain bitching about stuff accomplishes anything. I think this site works best as a forum to educate fans and Bruin alums on the why and what and how. Why are we here in Dorrell Limbo, what he's doing that just plain stinks, and how can we extract this program out of its funk.
Otherwise all this is just one big vent session. Sorry, just being honest.
Thanks again for keeping this all together. Look forward to hearing your response(s)

That just sucked
I have to believe program officials know what's going on. At halftime, the band stood in formation until the scoreboard finished the entire -- that's right, the entire -- clip of the last four minutes of the basketball team's win over Gonzaga. It's pretty pathetic when that's your halftime highlight (meaning no disrespect to Howland and his boys).
It's ironic you should post something on Guerrero dumping Toledo with a bowl game still to play. At this point, I'd be thrilled if he'd dump Dorrell and name the same interim coach as his replacement; after all, doesn't Ed Kezirian have the all-time record for winning percentage of any Bruins coach in any sport? He won't be any worse.
Frankly, KD should man up and tender his resignation Monday morning.

KD petitions NCAA for the following rule changes
- Field goals should be 6 points and not 3.
- Each team gets unlimited timeouts.
- "Going for it" on 4rth down is prohibited, only punts and field goals are allowed.
- Being unpredictable on offense is prohibited. The offense must tell the defense what play has been called before the ball is snapped.

My Karl Dorrell Costume

The hilarious part about sporting my Karl Dorrell costume to the game was the amount of dirty looks that I got before the game and the number of cheers I got in the stands after the game. For some reason, it seems like some of our fans were still fine with Dorrell before the game, but a lot of alums were chanting "Fire Dorrell!" at the end of the game. I Hopefully this loss finally convinces the Morgan Center that we need a change. We need this guy gone ASAP. Not even at the end of the season. Let's get him out this week. Our fans and our players deserve better.

Good to hear about the alums at the RB spreading the message. It's time to strike while the iron is hot, and make sure the criticism is heard loud and clear. LHS Class of 1999
This whole football thing is so sad. Now the classes of 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, and soon to be 2007 will have seen absolutely ZERO wins vs. suc during their time at UCLA. Pathetic. Dorrell and the clowns in the athletic department have officially ruined football for me.

I've booed our team's way twice in 15 years...
Karl Dorrell seems to be a decent man.
But he is only a decent coach.
That's it.
In every game it seems, there is a play where the team simply does NOT know what to do, and has to burn a costly timeout to do what other teams are prepared to do at a moment's notice.
The 4th and 1 play resulting in a poorly thrown pass to Pitre on the left side? THAT WAS IT.
The Notre Dame was not a "moral victory."
It was a LOSS.
Worse, it was not a moral win, but a loss of MORALE.
Our D didn't show like it has most of this year, but given that it actually HAS shown far more often than not this year, I can let it slide.
But the team, overall, is getting WORSE.
I will still believe they CAN win each game this year, because I am a fan and I love my school and its people.
But I no longer have faith that they WILL win any given game.
And the clock ticks...

Re: The defense
This is not like last year, when the offense carried the team. Sure it might have been irritating to the offense to have to keep scoring to have a chance at winning, but at least offense brings fun and excitement to the game. They wanted to go out there and air the ball out, or watch MJD go wild. Defense is smashmouth "let's do our damn job and get off the field". One unit should savor their opportunity to be on the field, the other should want to get off the field ASAP. If I were the defense, I'd be pretty sick of this crap too, getting stops only to be back on the field 3 minutes later.

defensive weakness exposed tonight
WSU burned us multiple times when we were in man and we switched to more zone coverages in 2nd half. Once we were in zone, we did not have the extra bodies to get a pass rush and Brinks did an excellent job of finding the open man.
If we can't play man coverage, then you are looking at last year's read-and-react type of defense.

PC missed open receiver on 4rth down pass to Pitre
Going for it on 4rth down on our half of the field is questionable. Not going for it on 4rth down when we are on the 11 is also questionable. We should be kicking 1-2 FGs max per game and should be trying for the endzone when we get that close.
