Love is a Bruin (it's official)

Ben Howland pulls of what could be the most important recruiting coup for UCLA hoops since the day Bill Walton committed to Coach Wooden.

Love is headed to Westwood. He just announced moments ago.

WELCOME KEVIN LOVE.

Here is the newest Bruin to OregonLive.com (HT to True Blue and Gold):

?UCLA just feels right,? Love said. ?It?s hard to explain, but I just know, 100 percent, UCLA is the place I want to be. When it came down to it, the things that really matter to me ? having my family close, having a great tradition and stuff like that ? are all there. I had to pick UCLA.?

Love?s decision will not become official until November, during the NCAA early-signing period, but he said he has no intention of changing his mind. When he signs, the Bruins will land a first-team Parade magazine all-American, a two-time reigning Oregon Class 4A player of the year and a consensus top-five player among the Class of 2007.

Many recruiting experts believe Love ? who averaged 29.0 points and nearly 17 rebounds for Lake Oswego as a junior last season, when he led the Lakers to their first state title ? is the No. 1 prospect in his class. [...]

Coaches cannot discuss recruits before they sign letter of intents, so Howland could not comment on Love?s decision. But for some time, Love has been Howland?s No. 1 target for 2007. Howland started his recruitment of Love when Love was in the eighth grade and took an unofficial visit to the Los Angeles.

Love, who is widely praised for his rebounding, passing ability and strong post play, will attend a school that has a strong history of big men ? a fact that was not lost on Love.

?UCLA has featured the two best big men in college basketball history and that tradition is a really big deal to me,? Love said. ?If I can fit into that system and be a part of that tradition and be a part of the past legacy, then that?s going to be huge.

?If people are going to mention me in the same breath as Lew Alcindor and Bill Walton, that?s awesome and it?s a blessing. But if I can do half of what those guys did, then I?ll be set. I know the expectations are going to be high, but I?m looking to go in there and play as well as I can and as hard as I can and have some fun.?
What a wonderful day for UCLA basketball.

GO BRUINS.

There's something to put a BIG smile on my face!
This is soo cool.  I have never felt this happy or excited about our program.  Not only did we have a big run, but we are loading up the talent to make runs for years to come.  Way to earn that raise Coach Howland!

Never heard of him
Who is this kid?  Nevertheless, I'm sure he will be a solid contributor to our team.

Seriously, this is an amazing recruiting job by Howland.  WOW!  The man is almost a God in my eyes.  We should have given him a lifetime contract.  Long Live Ben Howland.  Long Live the Bruins.  Long Live UCLA!

From the Bruin's mouth
Kevin Love: It's UCLA
By JOE FREEMAN
The Oregonian

HENDERSON, Nevada -- Kevin Love is headed to Hollywood.

The 6-foot-10 forward/center from Lake Oswego, who has generated as much recruiting interest as any prep basketball player in Oregon history, announced Tuesday at a news conference at Foothill High School that he will attend UCLA.

In selecting the Bruins, Love spurned the University of North Carolina and all but ended a feverish recruiting process that has spanned years.

"UCLA just feels right," Love said. "It's hard to explain, but I just know, 100 percent, UCLA is the place I want to be. When it came down to it, the things that really matter to me -- having my family close, having a great tradition and stuff like that -- are all there. I had to pick UCLA."

Love's decision will not become official until November, during the NCAA early-signing period, but he said he has no intention of changing his mind. When he signs, the Bruins will land a first-team Parade magazine all-American, a two-time reigning Oregon Class 4A player of the year and a consensus top-five player among the Class of 2007.

Many recruiting experts believe Love -- who averaged 29.0 points and nearly 17 rebounds for Lake Oswego as a junior last season, when he led the Lakers to their first state title -- is the No. 1 prospect in his class.

Love was in Nevada Tuesday participating in the Reebok Big Time, an Amateur Athletic Union tournament featuring more than 300 teams. His team, the Southern California All-Stars, played a game earlier today and UCLA coach Ben Howland watched from the fifth row.

Coaches cannot discuss recruits before they sign letter of intents, so Howland could not comment on Love's decision. But for some time, Love has been Howland's No. 1 target for 2007. Howland started his recruitment of Love when Love was in the eighth grade and took an unofficial visit to the Los Angeles.

Love, who is widely praised for his rebounding, passing ability and strong post play, will attend a school that has a strong history of big men -- a fact that was not lost on Love.

"UCLA has featured the two best big men in college basketball history and that tradition is a really big deal to me," Love said. "If I can fit into that system and be a part of that tradition and be a part of the past legacy, then that's going to be huge.

"If people are going to mention me in the same breath as Lew Alcindor and Bill Walton, that's awesome and it's a blessing. But if I can do half of what those guys did, then I'll be set. I know the expectations are going to be high, but I'm looking to go in there and play as well as I can and as hard as I can and have some fun."

Pure, unbridled joy.  You guys will be far more in-depth than I, so I'll just say this:

Joy.

Verbal commitment is nice but ...
I'm gonna hold off any celebration until KL signs on the dotted line in November. Anything can happen between now and then. I don't know how many times a recruit says he's going to one school only to wind up at another. But this is a sign of the good times in Westwood. And I'm sure Howland will do an excellent job of ensuring that other schools don't prey on our recruits.

GO BRUINS!!!

Random Thoughts...
  • Big name recruits, top coaching, contending for championships. This is what UCLA is supposed to be all about.
  • Potential 2007 lineup is looking scary good.
  • I'm feeling some serious man-love towards Howland and Kevin Love right now...
GO BRUINS!

It's disgusting...
how good this guy is. He's a 6'10" point-center, who can run the floor, rebound, block shots, score, pass...

Just finished watching his highlights reel again. Just sick.

Love as a Bruin
I think this must have been a picture taken before Vegas. But still pretty sweet:

CONGRATS to Coach Howland, AND to Love.
Anyone else salivating at a potential frontcourt of Love, Aboya, and Luc.  Wow.

Thanks for coming, young Mr. Love.  Welcome to the family!

If he does half of what Alcindor and Walton did, he'd be set?

Let's see, half of what Alcindor alone would be would work out to...

--1 NCAA title.
--10 years, 3 titles, 3 MVPs in the pros.

Works for me.  ;-)

WooHoo!!!
This is what I'm talking about.

Ben has brought us back faster than I could have ever imagined.  The idea that we could get a recruit like Kevin Love in the Dark Years between Coach and Ben was unimaginable.

Congratulations to everybody in the Bruin Family.  We are officially back. Clear some space in Pauley to hang a few more banners.

Classic:
"With all due respect to both coaches, Coach Howland is the best," Love said.

Fantastic
Ridiculously welcome news.

It's a great time to be a Bruin hoops fan and, as Nestor has said so well, let's soak it up.

Good times, my friends, good times.

GO BRUINS.

Passion
"Ben Howland was so ecstatic that, according to Kevin Love, the UCLA coach was near tears."

A man who is more passionate about the program than all of the fans, that's our coach, the kind of coach UCLA deserves.

I was there
It was HOT in that small room. Love's family, friends and the media were there. The SoCal All-Stars were also in attendance. Afflalo and Bozeman were present as well. I got a great seat and I remained at the presser from start to finish. Love cut right to the chase and reached down for the UCLA cap. Nice applause afterwards followed up by questions. After the presser, Afflalo was walking out and I shook his hand and wished him good luck next season. Following that, Love was walking out and I offered my congratulations and I asked him for a picture.  This is a great day in UCLA history.  I'm thankful that I was there in person.
