Pruitt to remain in NBA draft

ESPN.com news services

Updated: May 17, 2007, 10:49 PM ET

USC guard Gabe Pruitt, who declared for the NBA draft in April, will hire an agent and remain in the draft, ESPN's Jim Gray has learned.

Pruitt had not hired an agent when he declared last month, meaning he could have returned to school for his senior season if he'd chosen to withdraw by June 18.

The 6-foot-4 Pruitt averaged 12.5 points and 4.2 assists for the Trojans last season, leading the team with 47 steals. USC went 25-12 last season, losing in the NCAA regional semifinals to North Carolina. He is the 25th-leading scorer in school history with 1,102 points.

Looks like Timmeh! might be looking at tough times next year. Pruitt has hired an agent, so is in the draft. With Pruitt, Young, and Stewart gone, It looks like the Trojans will be limited to Mayo's chucking the ball towards the basket 50 times a game. No wonder Mayo decided to commit.  The money he's getting paid, and the ability to shoot the ball all the time are golden to a "student" athlete like him.

Looks like SUC will never reach the "magical level" they got to under Henry Bibby again. Timmeh!'s sweet 16 meltdown will probably be the pinnacle of his career at SUC.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

Poor decision
Why would he do this?  Why not just test out the waters without an agent?

I agree--this is bad news for the SuCsters.  I'm really broken up over this.

by Barnes2JJ on May 18, 2007 10:10 AM PDT reply actions

It was bad enough
that Timmeh sold his coaching soul to get one recruit because of his desperation to try to catch up with the Bruin juggernaut. But it seems that his mistake is now going to cost SUC the soul of its team as well. Look at the decommittments from SUC since the Mayo signing, the defections of Pruitt AND Young. This is what happens when you build a program THE WRONG WAY. Lesson learned, trOJans.

Brandon Jennings
from the class after OJ2, and another decommit that I can't seem to recall right now. I don't follow their joke of a basketball program seriously, so you'll have to forgive me. Perhaps someone else remembers.

Leonard Washington
But he didn't qualify academically.  He's headed to Stoneridge.

Stoneridge will solve that
"Former 2007 USC signee Leonard Washington was in action with Belmont Shores over the weekend. The powerful forward said he is headed to Stoneridge Prep and is opening up his recruitment."

I'm all broke up
Too bad about SUC, at least they'll have one 'super star' player in Mayo who'll get to handle the ball as much as he wants. That program just imploded. They could always get Lavin, I'm sure he can restore their 'glory'!
Victory or until next year!

Still a long time until opening tip.
There are plenty of things that can happen to OJ2 that will keep him out of the lineup.  I still like my prediction that young OJ2 doesn't play for justsc this year.

by Fox 71 on May 18, 2007 1:58 PM PDT up reply actions

I forgot my prediction
I will have to go back and check, but I think I had him checking in for Midnight Madness but not for game 1 tipoff.

And
Mayo will make it a high profile matchup and a fairly easy win.

I love it!
Let's see:
SUC losses 3 of its 4 best players.         Check.
Consensus #1 in the Nation coming to UCLA.  Check.
Gap widens.                                 Check.
LA Times ignores it all.                    Check.

I have to say...
SC is doing an amazing job closing the gap with the Bruins.  Unfortunately for them they are closing it with Lavin's teams.

http://usc.scout.com/2/644572.html

by jatteratious on May 18, 2007 5:02 PM PDT reply actions

This Has Already Been Debunked
THey're counting AIAW titles. If UCLA counted their AIAW titles they would have 125 championships.

Just another example of Trojan jealousy.

by BruinFan1 on May 18, 2007 5:23 PM PDT up reply actions

Since when has SUC worried about legitimacy?
They inflate everything to ridiculous proportions. They attempt to cheat the academic system by selectively reporting their numbers, why would anyone expect them to be honest about the number of national championships they've won? This is the same institution that "found" football championships before they were even truly awarded. They might as well inflate their endowment numbers with monopoly money. Idiots.

by Tydides on May 18, 2007 5:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Ridiculous
That they stoop to a twisting of words to try to take the spotlight from us.

Program of the 20th century?
Not hardly. Not when you're passed up by your crosstown rivals in pretty much half the amount of time. Remember, we didn't start getting serious about this sports stuff until mid-century. We have outpaced, outlasted, and outclassed the trOJans, and that goes far beyond sports as well.

It's hard for SUC to claim national sports superiority when they can't even claim that in their own city. So sad.

by Tydides on May 18, 2007 5:39 PM PDT up reply actions

Sad, sad, sad
It really is sad to see this.

On the other hand, I find it amusing that the school with the biggest ego in the world obviously has a serious self-confidence problem when they stoop to this level.

Figures
"USC men and women have combined for 106 national team titles (the NCAA only recognizes 95 of these titles because technically Football does not have an NCAA Championship in Division 1-A)."

Yes, USC has 106 total national team titles if you count non-NCAA titles along with NCAA titles.  Only 84 of those titles are counted by the NCAA by the way.  I don't know how the number 95 got in there.

We know the Bruins have 100 official NCAA titles.  But then how many "total" national titles does UCLA have?  UCLA has 121 total national titles.

http://uclabruins.cstv.com/trads/ucla-championships.html

The bottom line is that UCLA has more national titles no matter which way you count them.  In NCAA titles, it's 100 to 84 in favor of UCLA.  In total national team titles, it's 121 to 106 in favor of UCLA.  Some of these trojans are just plain ignorant about how many titles UCLA actually has.  And some know that they are comparing apples to oranges in order to deceive others.

by Bruin Roar on May 19, 2007 4:48 AM PDT up reply actions

Why should you expect anything different.
Everything about justsc is phony.  I now live about 2,500 miles away, and when the wind blows from the west, there are times when I still think I can smell that alleged campus.

by Fox 71 on May 19, 2007 11:08 AM PDT up reply actions

84 + 11
= 95. Those 11 championships are from football, even though the NCAA doesn't recognize football championships.

I really don't care if $UC wants to count those towards championships. They still only have 95 to our 100 when we're 40 years their junior. Pretty amazing.

by BruinFan1 on May 19, 2007 5:50 PM PDT up reply actions

the 95
includes NAIA (and other non-NCAA) titles. They added their football championships on top of that figure to reach 106. The author of that piece counted those even though the NCAA specifically does not count such titles (but the writer implies that they do so).

by bruinhoo on May 19, 2007 8:20 PM PDT up reply actions

Not NAIA (my bad)
AIAW, and other governing bodies that operated certain college sports before recieving NCAA approval and inclusion.

by bruinhoo on May 19, 2007 8:23 PM PDT up reply actions

I guess that means
we can count or national debate team championships as well, since we're just awaiting approval for the NCAA to clear debate as a sport.

by Tydides on May 19, 2007 8:58 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't think we should expand beyond
the NCAA and get into other things.  If we do that, it's a slippery slope, and justsc has all sorts of things they could bring to the party.

Most double-murders walking free and thumbing their nose at society.

Most quarterbacks taking ballroom dancing.

Most lawyers on staff to handle "unpleasantness" (i.e., beating up girlfriends, etc.)

and the ever-popular refusing to answer the phone when the NCAA investigators call.

This is just to name a few.

by Fox 71 on May 19, 2007 9:02 PM PDT up reply actions

Or add on our other titles
Several Men's volleyball titles before falling under the NCAA, some womens titles, and a few other titles in various sports, which brings our total somewhere in the 120-range.

by bruinhoo on May 19, 2007 9:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Again
with AIAW titles counted, we have 125 and USC has 106 if you also count their football championships including the ones that they really didn't win.

by BruinFan1 on May 20, 2007 4:00 PM PDT up reply actions

In other words
It is in SUC's best interest to only count legitimate titles, because if we were comparing apples to apples, the title gap widens.

by Tydides on May 20, 2007 4:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Your posts are sooooo good when you are not defending KD. ;-)

Seriously I think I wrote something back in winter predicting how the walls are going to cave into Timmeh's gap closers during this off season. It's going to be fun watching these clowns fighting for the fifth spot in conference this coming season.

<strike>Timmeh</strike> Southern Cal basketball program is so pathetic that even KD looks like a real program builder when it comes appearing as a "gap closer" in LA's major college sports. At least he beat his rival once in a game that actually meant something.

by Nestor on May 19, 2007 5:46 PM PDT reply actions

well, not to be controversial
but this is the only reason i do give KD a limited defense: His ethics are pretty much unquestionable and he does recruit really top notch kids with high ethics and character.

I know you can build a winner and have high character, which is an expectation not met yet, and  I hope KD is able to do this year, but if I had to choose, I would rather have a KD than a Timmeh!

I guess Pat Forde should recant this garbage
I've pretty much always thought that Pat Forde was borderline retarded, oops, I mean mentally hadicapped, and when he wrote his garbage about Florida being The Program for the next 10 years, something about it confirmed my suspicion (http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/columns/story?columnist=forde_pat&id=2867147&sportCat=ncb):

"Ben Howland is recruiting formidably at UCLA, and California never runs out of prospects. He will be challenged, though, by rival USC, which has Tim Floyd and a new arena going for it. This rivalry could challenge North Carolina-Duke and Louisville-Kentucky as the nation's best in the coming years."

This backhanded compliment was supposed to recognize UCLA as one of the top programs in the country over the next 10 years (which is obvious, isn't it?), but even as a backhanded compliment it was completely misguided when it was made 10 days ago. It's offensive to fans of UNC, Duke, Louisville, Kentucky and UCLA, who collectively are among the best programs in NCAA history, with 27 championships and 67 final 4 appearances among them. Four of the 5 listed teams have at least as many FINAL 4 appearances as USC has NCAA tournament bids (13). USC has 11 tournament wins in 26 games, while the other 5 are ranked 1-4 and 7th in all-time tourney wins (with 100, 92, 88, 85 and 53 wins). So, USC goes out and finishes 3rd in the Pac-10 for the first time in umpteen years and wins two games in the tourney, and suddenly, it's now a part of a rivalry that matches two of the greatest ones in college hoops history? It's disgraceful even to think it.

Now that Pruitt is gone, Forde's comments seem particularly ignorant. USC has made it clear what it is as a basketball program: A "university" where players too selfish, undisciplined or unintelligent to meet Ben Howland's high standards can go to show off their streetball skills in a 1-3 year audition for the NBA, CBA or Harlen Globetrotters. A place where the coach is as likely to behave like a 20-year old buffoon as the players are (cue reference to Timmeh's toddler-level tirade at the end of the loss to UNC). That is no way to build a program, much less a storied rivalry. We will own USC for years to come, in part because of Howland, in part because of tradition, and in part because those things allow us to pick the best players to build a team with.

Now that the national media has jumped onto the USC bandwagon, let's not be concerned about their injuries as they dismount with the same lack of grace with which they hopped on.

Mr. Stain's agent wouldn't have negotiated a pay cut.  And justsc is awash in money.  And he would have to have a raise because of the difference in cost of living in South Central versus Arkansas.

Here's the real story, folks
Pruitt, over at SuC, left school for the NBA because he was academically ineligible.

http://www.dailynews.com/usc/ci_5972697

I don't even think the Toejam Times has even mentioned anything about him leaving school yet, let alone his difficulties in Senora Rosa's class.  I could be wrong, but I read the paper everyday and I haven't seen it mentioned yet (please, no hate posts because I happen to read the rag--I enjoy it for reasons other than sports).

This story speaks for itself.

You need therapy, Barnes
It's time for an intervention.  Need to get Barnes weaned away from the fishwrap.

It can be done.  It's not easy for some.  Just remember, one day at a time.

by Fox 71 on May 24, 2007 4:59 PM PDT up reply actions

Oh, I agree
I DO need therapy.  But not for reading the fishwrap.

I could explain why I read it, but the reason is not that interesting, nor is it related to sports, and it has more to do with the quality (or lack thereof) of the paper in San Diego than anything.

I wish I could oblige...but I can't.

Is there a 12 step program?

by Barnes2JJ on May 24, 2007 5:03 PM PDT up reply actions

What do you need beyond BN?
It has drama.  Lots of that (like today with Bruinfan1).

The comic section is great, especially when our resident psychologist does his sessions.

You get all the news you need.

The editorial section is pretty good.

The sports page can't be beat.

And someone keeps giving us all those shorts of the cheerleaders.

You can do it, Barnes.  Just remember the higher power (in this case, Coach Howland.)  We're all behind you.

by Fox 71 on May 24, 2007 9:06 PM PDT up reply actions

Ack - the most freudian of typos
That was supposed to be SHOTS of the cheerleaders, not shorts of the cheerleaders.  (That was really bad.  I think I better intervene with myself.)

by Fox 71 on May 24, 2007 9:07 PM PDT up reply actions

Now, that
Freudian slip really did make me laugh, and I caught it the first time I was reading it.  I am still laughing, in fact, and not at you, but with you.

Yes, yes, BN has almost all that I need to get by.  It has everything you said it has.  I even feel somewhat addicted to it at times.  I cannot recall who it was, but someone alikened the site to porn because they were on it so much.  I understand what they meant.  And I'm not even speaking of the cheerleaders' shorts, although I do appreciate their shorts and tops and pretty much everything else about them.

But until BN starts posting listings of concert events and restaurant reviews and other happenings in L.A. (other than UCLA events), I have to turn to really the only source which routinely provides that info.  I don't expect or want BN to turn into that kind of a site.  I regret many things about the fishwrap, including its rotten slant on sports, but I do appreciate other things about it.

Also, aside from BN, I'm also addicted to reading my morning newspaper (as in, holding a real newspaper in my hand, and coffee alongside) and, like I mentioned, the paper in S.D., quite simply put, sucks.  The Times has some good writers and, aside from my wife and UCLA sports, good writing is my true love.  The enjoyment I get from it is worth the 50 cents a day.

So, there it is.  I haven't yet been convinced to give up the habit.  I'm willing to try, but it's a 19 year long addiction so far.
