Show Your Colors

What type of UCLA memorabilia do you own?

I realize that most people who diary up content on this site post things far more significant and sports-worthy than my posts.  I sincerely appreciate everyone's contributions and realize that my contributions are more "pop culture"-related perhaps.  But I try to tie in UCLA whenever possible.  Plus, it's fun to have a little diversion at times, especially over the weekend, when the posting on BN may decrease slightly.

Plus, it's great to see how active and involved this site is.  As I have previously dared, compare the activity on this site to that on others (Chronicles of Criminals, for instance) and you'll immeidately see what I mean.  Tons of credit to Nestor for operating such a fantastic forum.

Here is what prompted this diary:  As I was driving to work today, an SUV in the lane next to me but also in front of me had a "SUC ALUMNI" license plate holder.  Fighting the urge to retch, I sped up and passed the gas-guzzler, only to face another car with a "SUC ALUMNI" license plate holder immediately in front of me.  I was sandwiched in-between them, and developed near-Paris Hilton-like claustrophobia, but was able to escape.

It got me to thinking.  Do you show the world that you go/went to UCLA?  If so, how do you do it?

For instance, I learned on BN that UCLA offers up a UCLA luggage "bag tag."  Some kind soul posted the link and I ordered one for about 6 bucks.  It's bright blue (similar to the blue on BN) and I love it.  I immediately find my bag every time I see it on the luggage carousel.

I also sport a UCLA license frame holder on my car, have some UCLA polo shirts and t-shirts, and have a UCLA mug, UCLA train car (it's awesome), and an "SC SUCKS" bumper sticker in my office.  While driving, I've gotten many thumbs up from people who have seen my license plate holder and I don't think these middle-aged guys are just flirting with me.

I think I recall seeing on BN that some Bruins fly UCLA flags, which I think is great.  Bruinbabe outdid everyone with her blue and gold wedding.  You don't get more dedicated than that.

I don't want you to count up all your t-shirts--this is more about how you show your allegiance, not just a numbers game.

Let's hear how you show your colors and what type of reactions you get.  Any good stories?

I will get it started ...
My key chain plays "Sons of Westwood"
One of the drawers in my dresser is filled with UCLA shirts/shorts/sweatshirts organized in hoops, basketball, and general (I don't know how many I have. I have t-shirts from Southern Cal games from 91-95)
UCLA socks
Bruin license plate holder
Bruin coffee mug at work
A special beer glass commemorating 1994 Rose Bowl
Special beer glass commemorating 1995 Hoops NC
Gold ties/blue shirts combos for football/basketball season
UCLA duffle bag
UCLA banner at work
Mrs. N went to UCLA.
Got engaged infront of Royce Hall. Married by a minister who was a professor at UCLA.

If I can think of more ... I will hit back.

Oh man
You put me to shame.  Engaged in front of Royce Hall to a Bruin is pretty high up there.

Anyone with UCLA ringtones on their cell?

I forgot I have a small UCLA stuffed bear next to our family room TV which used to play Sons of Westwood when you squeezed its paw.  It's all squeezed out, unfortunately (or the battery died).

I also have some fairly obscene anti-SUC buttons and, of course, several UCLA caps and sweatshirts.

Any UCLA tattoos out there?

It's tough to follow Nestor
Most of my stuff disappeared when I went in the army.  And it would be just a tad too small now anyway.

Not on public display, but visible as I type this is my 7-Up bottle saluting Coach.

And here in Florida, with no front licence plate, I have a UCLA license plate to hook on (as soon as I find my front license plate holder.)  (If I can't find that, it goes on my golf cart.)

In the golf cart is my little cooler that says UCLA on it.

I have my two custom built UCLA hats.  (I got tired of all the little curly-q's and frou-frou things, so I had "UCLA" put on in big gold block letters.  It's very plain, and says all that needs to be said.)  Those are my winter hats.  I the summer, when you tend to sweat a lot on the course, I have my two other hats.

Last but not least, are my t-shirts.  Two plain UCLA - one in gold on actual Bruin blue (Mrs. Fox 71 got that somehow, I don't know how) and a white one with blue lettering.  My brother in law gave me the "My two favorite teams are UCLA and whover is playing (justsc)."  (It actually has those mustard and ketchup letters capitalized, but I can't bring myself to type them that way here.)  We can't wear collarless shirts on the course, so they are reserved for non-golf occasions.

Oh, and my favorite button (among quite a few.)  A Bruin basketballer (sort of looks like Goodrich) in the old, non-baggy pants uniform, wearing a top hat and a magicians's cape, and he has about twelve arms all spread out and whirling around and a basketball in each hand.  And it says "Prodigious Prestidigitators" on it.  (Drawn by the great Tony Auth.)

key chain plays "Sons of Westwood"
I was at some sports-related barber shop where they had a bunch of local team memorabilia, and lo and behold they had those key chains. Unfortunately they also had the Trojan version. I got sick of seeing those ketchup and mustard colors, so I covered up as many of the USC key chains as I could with the Bruin ones and sat back down.

The best part was a little bit later a young boy picked up the Bruin one and had the song played. After it was done, he tried out the Trojan one behind it. After listening to that crap, he took up the Bruin key chain again and kept playing it over and over again. And then his little brother came by and played the Bruin key chain as well. Proving once again... a Bruin trumps a trojan every time :)

Memorabilia
I'm an overt UCLA fan, I've got a sticker on my crappy truck and the UCLA Alum Licence plate frame, not to mention shirts, clothes and other assorted junk like that (game tickets also; namely the UCLA-SUC football ticket is on my work desk). I only have two items that I could not live without
  1. A signed copy of Wooden's "fundamentals of modern basketball" I waited in line 4 hours to get it signed, and I got to shake coach's hand after ward
  2. My mom. I'm a thrid gen Bruin, my grandfather took classes at the Southern Branch of the University of California (he didnt't graduate, but I still consider him a Bruin). My grandma and grandfather had season tickets to UCLA basketball in '49, if you recall this is coach's second year. My mom graduated from UCLA in '75. I got to listen to her stories of having class with Bill Walton and what school was like back when she was a student there.
These are the most important UCLA Memorabilia in my life.

Back to work now...

Victory or until next year!

Stuff
License Plate frame, lot's of shirts and sweatshirts, hats, glasses/beer mugs, UCLA panoramic picture in my home office.
A couple weeks ago, as I was driving home from work, south of Dulles airport, I was behind somebody who had plate of "UCLA 93" on their car.

Even though I was mentioned
I'll list some more:

Got engaged outside Sproul (props to N for Royce Hall)
My car has a UCLA alumni plate frame and a window cling.
Keychain
Visor
Shirts from victories over Southern Cal since 1996.
Baby T
Championship shirt from 1995 (my neighbor's son had a T-shirt business and they were one of the main suppliers)
Work computer wallpaper is Eric McNeal's interception.  Laptop's wallpaper is Royce
Cellphone wallpaper is Joe Bruin (phone doesn't support UCLA ringtones yet, but Mr. BB's does play Mighty Bruins)
Anything my old man comes across when he is buying things to sell on Ebay (a campus map from 1963, a patch)
Lastly, the 7Up bottle commemorating the Wooden championships.  Technically, this is still my old man's but I get it after he passes on.

Think N has us beat here
but here it goes:

The usual assortment of UCLA t-shirts, polos and sweatshirts
UCLA baseball jersey (not authentic, I don't think)
UCLA baseball cap and ski cap
Adidas/UCLA warmup jacket
Adidas Superstars - found by pure dumb luck in exact UCLA colors and my exact size (13.5), in Gilroy of all places.
UCLA c/o 2004 pint glass
UCLA shot glass
Gauntlet plastic cup
Travel coffee mug from my dorm
Photo board in my apartment with various shots from my time at UCLA (and my Wooden Court dedication game ticket).
Dress approprately on Basketball/Football game days (the Friday prior for football)
Was one of maybe 20 people (along with a family from NoVa and who I assume were parents of UCLA players) rooting and 8-clapping for the Bruins at a UCLA/Virginia Men's soccer match last fall in Charlottesville.

The Usual Plus One Very Unique Item
As a Bruin Athletic Club member I have all the backpacks, blankets, seat cushions, clocks, license plate frames, etc. that the Athletic Department has sent out over the last 15 years or so.  As a good Bruin Alum, I also have an assortment of clothing including a watch, jacket, sweatshirts, gloves, socks, at least five hats, including a hat from the '95 Final Four, so many t-shirts I can't count, including an ancient t-shirt from the '76 Rose Bowl, etc, etc.  But my prized UCLA memorabila is a UCLA Football Player Bobblehead Doll from the 1950's.  It was a gift from someone who had it in their family and knew I was a big Bruin fan.

by Bruin77 on Jun 15, 2007 1:21 PM PDT reply actions

I've got all kinds of stuff...
First the usual T-shirts, sweatshirts, keychains, pub glasses.

But for the different and unusual, I have a defective License plate frame which says, "UCLA Bruins   Don't break for trojans."  It's Subtle in its misspelling as well as crude.  It is one of only 2 that didn't get destroyed.

I have a UCLA Jellybean dispenser filled right now with Yellow jellybeans.  I need to fill it with blue and gold.

I have 2 Bruins Hotsauce Bottles from the late 90's.  I haven't figured out what I want to do with them yet.

The most unique item I have though is a simple plastic sign that says UCLA Bruin Walk, autographed by (almost)all of the first Howland coached team.  While not a banner year, it serves as a reminder of how far this program has come in 4 years.  Plus, UCLA's last losing season is much more unique than a championship year.

Eventually I will get a Basketball with the next championship team's signatures.

UCLA golf towel
I forgot I have a UCLA towel hanging from my golf bag.  I've been debating about getting UCLA covers for my woods in my golf bag, but there are several varieties and I've suffered from paralysis by analysis.  I can't decide.

Oh, I used to have a black desk lamp with the UCLA emblem on it, but in one of my many moves, somehow I lost it.  For shame...

by Barnes2JJ on Jun 15, 2007 2:01 PM PDT reply actions

Club head covers are SOOOOO expensive
Have you seen them anywhere other than the student store?

by Fox 71 on Jun 15, 2007 2:51 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes
I've seen them in a couple different golf shops around town (San Diego).  I'm not certain if they are "officially licensed" or not.

One set are all cutesy furry bears, but if Tiger Woods can have a bright orange tiger for a club head cover, then I can have a UCLA bear one.  Yes, my golf game is THAT good that I can compare my equipment with Tiger's (yeah, right).

Another set I have seen are very sleek blue ones, rimmed in gold, with UCLA written in script on them.

Unfortunately, I have not checked the prices on any of them yet because I couldn't make up my mind if I wanted them in the first place, and which of the two sets I prefer.

by Barnes2JJ on Jun 15, 2007 3:00 PM PDT up reply actions

Sleek > cute
I would be laughed off the course if I had "cutesy" head covers.  (The guy I played with today was a 30 year man in the army and was a sergeant major.  I think he has the right to have me taken out and shot if I have cutesy head covers.)

If it's convenient, and if you remember, see what the sleek ones cost and let me know.  I would appreciate it.

by Fox 71 on Jun 15, 2007 3:04 PM PDT up reply actions

To Barnes and Fox
If you have a Roger Dunn affiliate near you (there is a San Diego version, perhaps it is called Golf Mart?) they should have access to some decent and decently priced stuff.

I have to pick up a club over the weekend, so I will try to remember to price out what they have.

by Free the 16 on Jun 15, 2007 3:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Will do
The sleek ones are very cool.  I just have to remember where I have seen them.  But I will keep it in mind now that we have discussed this.

by Barnes2JJ on Jun 15, 2007 3:10 PM PDT up reply actions

I have the Blue Head Cover
It has a see thru top, and is JUST barely big enough to cover my Ping G2.  It's a nice one and I think they still carry it at Roger Dunns.

Other assorted UCLA gems, office category:
UCLA clock
large plastic cup from Football game
12th bruin towel UCLA football towel
UCLA football and basketball schedules
seating maps for the Rose Bowl and Pauley

Home Edition:
UCLA clock
Bruin Head Cover
Bruin golf watch
Bruin divot tool
Bruin drink cooler
Various UCLA sweatshirts, wind breakers, hoodies, scrub style pants, shirts, etc.
Various UCLA sports books.
Autographed by John Wooden copies of They Call Me Coach and Inch & Miles (his children's book).
and the latest and greatest, a UCLA shirt for my daughter.

Since she is too big for the baby stuff and not big enough for the older kid stuff, she's kind of an in between size.  It's too big for her to wear outside, but makes for the perfect sleep shirt.  So it's the last thing I see her in before she goes to sleep!

by Free the 16 on Jun 15, 2007 3:04 PM PDT up reply actions

UCLA Christmas ornaments from 96-99 (the ones they sell in Ackerman every year).  Those commemorate the four Christmases that I was a student.

by bruinbabe2000 on Jun 15, 2007 2:31 PM PDT reply actions

And yet one more
UCLAoply.  Basically, Monopoly but with various things on campus and in Westwood as the properties.  I got this from Santa Claus in 1989.

Yep
I have UCLAoply, too.  I forgot about that one.

Artwork
I've got many of the same things as you all. My favorites include:

A front plate Anderson frame and a back plate Bruins frame - just because I waited to put them on a car worthy of pimping UCLA. My old undergrad beater would have been a embarrassment to the institution.

An authentic Riddell UCLA football helmet. I kept the grey facemask even with the team switched to blue and back. Grey is the classic look. I keep it on my desk at work.

But the best is yet to come. I "commissioned" an Arron Afflalo oil painting. It's going to be a 36x48 picture of AA stroking a jumper vs. SUC. I don't know how to paste pictures, but I'm sure you all know the face and the stroke I'm talking about. Perhaps its a bit odd that an almost 30 year-old man has an oil painting of another man, but I don't care. AA is the man.

The ring takes the cake
I thought about putting saphires on my wedding band, but I decided on 1-point (.01 karats) diamonds.

I wish I had your wife as one of my teachers in high school, but there were a few alumni who taught at my school.  In fact, they had a bet with the one Southern Cal alum on the football game each year that whoever won, the loser had to come to school on Monday in the winner's colors.  We never lost the entire time I was in high school.

How come everyone else gets thumbs up for their cars and I don't?  Maybe I live too close to campus.  The most I have ever gotten was a "Go Bruins" at a Lakers game when I was wearing my sweatshirt (this was right before the NCAA tournament in 2001).  This year before the Southern Cal game, I was out and about running errands, and everytime I saw someone with a UCLA shirt, I would say "Go Bruins."

by bruinbabe2000 on Jun 15, 2007 4:31 PM PDT up reply actions

In 2005,
after the Georgia/Florida game (and another tragic Georgia loss), my gf and I were walking back to our tailgate.

She was wearing her UCLA sweatshirt, and got a "Go Bruins!" from one of the Florida fans walking past.  It was a strange experience.

I don't believe I'll ever forgive her for wearing the UCLA hoodie during the Georgia/Florida game.  Our group was mortified she was wearing blue.

by CAJason80 on Jun 15, 2007 4:47 PM PDT up reply actions

Thanks, babe, but...
... I guess I got carried away in typing my whole list up.  Sorry, folks

Interesting side note which you might like though, bb:  When I got my UCLA udnergrad ring, I didn't inscribe my SSN on the inside of the band, although there was a space on the orderform to have it done for free, for some reason.  Instead, I put the month and day nubmers for my birthday, for my eventual wife's birthday, and the year we met.  I figured the ring was a UCLA ring, so it'd be clear that we met there.

Of course, this took a little gall on my part:  she and I hadn't even started dating yet, and she was still with her HS boyfriend.  Then again, she WAS my best friend, and I couldn't think of anyone else I wanted to be memorialized on my UCLA ring.

Go fig.

Why not get carried away!
You are entitled to.  And you deserve it.

But let's not forget our dear sister BB2000.  Those pictures are great.  Mrs Fox 71 (not a UCLA person - she went to a small school in Kansas, total enrollment roughly the same as the enrollment in History 7A) was impressed, and that takes some doing.

So I vote for Meriones and BB 2000 as the school spirit leaders, at least until I get my head covers.  Then watch out.  (I still wish I had had the nerve to insist on naming my only son Theotis "Big Foot" Fox.  I was a wuss, what can I say?)

My friends, I thank thee...
... and I am humbled.  However, I msut give due credit to the wife, for the additional reasons:

(1)  A "1st to 100" Long-sleeve T for Father's Day today.

(2)  Although she had a particualr HS athlete in her class for only TWO TO THREE WEEKS (transfer situation), she had such a profound effect on this youngster, who came from a family devoted to another Pac-10 school, that the child eventually declared for UCLA.   This was despite the student being on the fence for some time; we now have another blue-chipper in a sport where we have multiple NCAA titles.  (I can't be more specific, as I do not wish to embarrass the student or violate their privacy.  Long story short -- she got us one.)

(3)  Again, let me say it -- the woman put BLUE HIGHLIGHTS in her hair last weekend.

Gotta love the wife.

Mind you, I am not a UCLA alum, but I fully intend on going to UCLA for my Graduate schooling.  My dream growing up was to go to UCLA, didn't happen.  I am working on it, though, and it will be done.

At work, there are mostly sc homos and my boss is a ND guy.  Most of us have the mini helmets; I am proud to say I was the first of the bunch to get one.  I also wear UCLA shirts to the office on Fridays.

I have
2 UCLA alumni polo/golf shirts and they are great.  I get lots of compliments on them and they look good on the golf course or in the office.

Another amazing thread
Barnes2JJ ... you need to make this a weekly feature . May be even twice a week during the off season. You certainly have green light to do so from this BNer.

GO BRUINS.

Thank you very much
I appreciate the nice words and vote of confidence.

I can definitely try and make this a regular Friday thing.

It's a lot of fun and I think it helps everyone celebrate why we love UCLA and who we are.

by Barnes2JJ on Jun 16, 2007 10:33 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah ...
You are ruining people's plans of painting this site as bunch of haters who are no fun and are not really UCLA fans. ;-)

Oh
I forgot, we have no sense of humor.  I can't remember laughing once or ever even having a good time while in school.

by Barnes2JJ on Jun 16, 2007 11:49 AM PDT up reply actions

Add to that
I have no life. No significant other. I stay with my  parents and am blogging away from their basement.

And you weigh
300 pounds, constantly struggle with pimples, and wear black-rimmed glasses.

Same here.

And
I spend my whole day working away at some cubicle writing TPS repots and holding on to a red stapler.

Too busy
complaining about the negativity or lack of humor on BN? (talking about those "long time lurker, first time poster")

Red Stapler
It is my assumption that it is used to ward off the alien rays ln lieu of the tin foil hat they took away from you.

Did you get that memo?
You see, it's just that we're using new cover sheets now, so if you could go ahead and do that from now on, that'd be greeeaaat.

I don't know where to start
Forgive me for being late to the game, but I do have:
  1. a personalized license plate that says "93UCLA" and is on the official UCLA Alumni license plate (we're the only university in the country that has one)
  2. 4 UCLA t-shirts, 3 sweatshirts, one cap
  3. A UCLA bottle opener (plays the fight song)
  4. coffee mug
  5. Hoops banner listing 11 years of championships, and
  6. John Wooden autographed basketball.
There might be more--it's hard to keep track. Oh, my daughter (2 1/2) has a ton of things, such as a UCLA cheerleader outfit and 3 UCLA shirts, and my wife does, too.

Alumni License Plate
UCLA is the only university with one?  That is great.

by Barnes2JJ on Jun 18, 2007 4:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Only one in California
Other states do offer some alumni plates; Virginia offers a metric shit ton of such plates, for example.

What I've got
  1.  3 UCLA sweatshirts (blue with gold letters)
  2.  4 hats, although I can't find one of them
  3.  Various mugs, glasses, pencils, etc.
  4.  A VHS video from 1995 from CBS on the NC
  5.  An official UCLA-sponsored video from 1995
  6.  A small powder-blue flag with the UCLA logo
  7.  My first student ticket to the UCLA-$UC game in 1982
  8. My UCLA acceptance letter from Feb. 1982
  9.  A Hedrick Hall 4-South t-shirt that our RA had made for some of us
  10.  1 license plate frame
  11.  An "FUSC" shirt
  12.  A bumper sticker from 1984 with the old "my two favorite teams are UCLA and whoever's playing USC" quote
  13.  A program autographed by Al Scates
And finally, my favorite..

14.  An old, torn, blue UCLA windbreaker that I wore to class for at least half of my 4 years in Westwood.  It was the first thing I purchased on my first visit to the campus as a senior in HS.  It doesn't fit me anymore, after 20 years and 25 pounds, but it's a great reminder of the best years of my life.

Note to my wife: Sorry, honey, I meant to say they were the second best years of my life. Ha ha.. whoops.
