[UPDATED] Report: UCLA Hires Reggie Moore as Recievers Coach

According to a published report this morning, the scoop Dumpdorrell.com identified last night regarding UCLA's hire of Reggie Moore seems to be confirmed.  Still no word from UCLA, but here's the report:

North Dakota State assistant football coach Reggie Moore - the cog behind a recruiting pipeline to Houston - is taking a similar position with UCLA.

The opening is a direct result of the Bruins hiring Rick Neuheisel as their head coach this week. Neuheisel was Moore's position coach at UCLA when Moore played for the Bruins. Neuheisel then hired Moore as a graduate assistant in 2003 when he was the head coach at the University of Washington.

Obviously, Coach Neu isn't wasting any time assembling his staff.  And it's great to welcome back another UCLA alumni back home.  Here is Moore's official bio from the Bison's website.  And here is more from Tracy Pierson on the UCLA/Moore/Neuheisel connection:

Neuheisel spent six seasons (1988-93) as an assistant coach at his alma mater. During his final four years he tutored the wide receivers, helping to develop some of UCLA's all-time great receivers, such as J.J. Stokes, Kevin Jordan and Sean LaChapelle. In 1993, Stokes helped the Bruins reach the Rose Bowl while setting school records with 82 receptions, 1,181 yards (since broken) and 17 touchdowns. LaChapelle made 73 receptions in 1991 and Jordan made 45 as a sophomore in Neuheisel's last year (1993). In 1990, three Bruins - Scott Miller, Reggie Moore and LaChapelle - all made at least 35 receptions for at least 600 yards.

As you may recall, Moore was in the mix last time around.  Here is a blurb from last February from Dohn:

Former UCLA receiver Reggie Moore is in the mix for the vacant receivers job, sources told me a few hours ago. Moore spent the last three seasons at North Dakota State working with the wide receivers, and is the third person interviewed by coach Karl Dorrell who played at UCLA.

UCLA part-time intern Eric Scott and San Jose State receivers coach Brent Brennan also interviewed for the job Moore played in the NFL with the New York Jets and Los Angeles Rams as a receiver and return specialist.

As I mentioned in the comments, I'm not disappointed at all in letting Scott go.  UCLA doesn't need guys hanging out with thugs mid-day in Norwalk.

It's a Neu day my friends. Another day, another good move by Neuheisel.  Let's hope this keeps rolling.

UPDATE  -M:   As Free the 16 noted in the comment thread, UCLA has made a formal announcement type thingy:

Former UCLA wide receiver Reggie Moore will join the Bruin football staff in a position yet to be determined, head coach Rick Neuheisel announced today.

"Reggie is a great Bruin and he will be an asset to our staff," said Neuheisel. "I haven't put all the pieces to the puzzle together yet, but he has a lot of experience in different areas. One thing I do know is that he will be involved in alumni relations."

Yes, you read that right.  A "position yet to be determined."  So maybe Scott's not out.  Or maybe Neu is waiting on his OC hire.  We'll see.

GO BRUINS.

Welcome to Moore
And with this move Neuheisel makes sure its just SuC who has a convicted dog abusing criminal in their coaching staff.

..and a little jab at DW
"You are my #1 recruit, Dewayne, it's just that I want you to know that it's my team, old son."

I am missing how replacing the receivers coach
is a jab at the defensive coordinator?

Contrary to public opinion, I am taking RN at his word that he wants DW here, and I am sure that they will work together and produce very good results for us.

"when you've seen how big the world is, how can you make due with this?"

Two things..
(1) Jab was perhaps a poor choice of words; reminder might have been more appropriate.

(2) This was posted before I heard the news about DW being on board and listened to his and Neuheisel's comments on the conference call.

Nonetheless, it sounds like things -- with DW  and his two cohorts on board less Scott -- are rounding into shape nicely. DWs remarks went a long way towards dispelling the suspicions and mistrust (at least for me). It's a pity he did not speak sooner. But, then again, I guuess he had his own negotiations to mind.

Stop the bashing
Let's take the high road when we are taking about former coaches. At least stick to discussing how well they did their jobs and how well they represented UCLA DURING their tenure. Maybe you were just trying to stick it to SUC. Let's not do it at the expense of one of our own.

by beentie on Jan 3, 2008 7:34 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

How well they did their jobs?
How did our WRs do this past season?

by bluestreet on Jan 3, 2008 7:36 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

that would be more appropriate.
let's talk about that and his recruiting record.

by beentie on Jan 3, 2008 7:40 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah
Our WRs sure kicked ass under E Scott's coaching last year. NOT

Keeping it positive
It only took two dropped passes on perfectly thrown balls before we finally caught a pass in our bowl game.

Former coaches
You mean those pretenders who were responsible for wasting 5 years of our UCLA football lives.

YOU take the high road.  I have a right to be bitter about what they did to the program.  Have you been watching the bowl games?  This team left behind by the former coaches do not belong on the same field with any of the bowl teams.

And yes, E. Scott has been convicted.  That is a fact.

by bluegold on Jan 3, 2008 7:52 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Bitterness is always a terrible choice.
Do you think John Wooden ever wastes time being bitter?

This however, is good news, and an upgrade. I think E Scott was put in a bad position, as he had no college coaching experience, and was supposed to receive guidence from KD, which either happened poorly or didn't happen at all. He did do a great job recruting for us, and I wish him the best.

guidance from KD
HAHA - what would guidance from Doofus look like?  "Hey Scott, coach harder."  "Hey Scott, turn the corner."  How can somebody who has no clue give somebody else guidance?   Scott was a criminal and the receivers sucked with him as coach.  Good riddance.

More bashing
Hey, remember Jim Colletto? Our reject offensive line coach let go by KD last year? Seems the Detroit Lions are promoting him to offensive coordinator to replace Mike Martz. LOL

Welcome home, Bruin!
And definitely good riddance to Scott, who was a terrible coach and a blight on the program.  Coach Neuheisel hasn't coached a down yet, but he's already calling all the right plays.

I Don't Fault Eric Scott
He took a job he wanted and did his best.

Apparently, KD knew of Scott's previous problems. Whether sufficient disclosure was made by KD, is on KD, not Scott.

I've written way too much defending the hire of Scott and discussing his charges and convictions. Bottom line, I think it was good to give him a second chance.

As pointed out, above, Scott may have been the victim of an HC, one of our great receivers, who did not help him grow into or master his job. In the same way, DW may have been a victim of the same syndrome; it's hard to learn to be a great DC when you practice against a shitty O.

Yes, the receivers had a bad year. And, I think it appropriate to replace Scott.

But, I think some of the ill will toward Scott is not of his own making. His name was thrown around in the "holding the hostages ransom" play and I'm sure that hurt him. He didn't say or do anything at that time to deserve ill will. Once more, the damage was done by DW supporters -- maybe not DW, and certainly not Scott.

Eric Scott is a member of our Bruin family; he did his best for us. I wish him well. I hope life is good to him.

Totally agree
I don't lay the entire sub-par performance of the WR's on ES.  Too many other factors (Horrible O & the players need to catch the balls).  Just like I reserve judgement on BO due to the pitiful O, same goes for the WR's.

Remember that ES was the same ES that suited up for us and was in the living room when PC & Norton bad mouthed UCLA and tried to woo Price away.  To me, that is the true ES that bleeds blue & gold.  I will welcome him if he is in another capacity and if not, I wish him the best.

I don't see anything that says Scott is out
just that Moore is in, taking a "similar" position.  It's likely that Scott is out of course, but I haven't seen the announcement anywhere.  And the same goes for any of the other coaches.  (Do you suppose Training Jay has cleaned out his office yet?)

by Fox 71 on Jan 3, 2008 8:39 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, is Scott being retained in different job?
Maybe with some recruiting responsibilities, liason with faculty or whatever the towel waver does?  Is the towel waiver going to stay?

Coach K was there when Toledo was coach
I see no reason why he would leave with Coach N coming in.

by bruinbabe2000 on Jan 3, 2008 9:27 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I doubt it
I should have clarified that I saw nothing explicit confirming that Scott is not returning.  I just would be very surprised if he was.

As others have noted, he did a poor job as WR coach, lacks experience and has a checkered past (his poor judgment in even being there for the Norwalk incident, plus what I recall as him only being partially forthright with UCLA prior to the scandal, are enough for me without needing to consider the priors).

Also, while I can understand Neu holding some guys over on defense, I would be shocked if any besides, maybe, Dino Babers staying on the offensive side of the ball.  Neu is an offensive guy; he'll want his own guys.  So, even if Scott was doing a good job (which he wasn't), I still think he'd be gone.  I suppose some recruiting post is an outside possibility, but I doubt it.

As for Coach K, I doubt he's going anywhere (he's just the academic guy and has been around forever).

by Menelaus on Jan 3, 2008 9:49 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Coach K is Not Just an Academic Guy
Coach K has part of the UCLA football program since the early 1970's. He was an outstanding offensive lineman in the Pepper Rogers and Dick Vermiel eras. He then became an assitant coach under Donahue for many years.

On a personal note, we both lived in Dykstra Hall. I remember him as one of the nicest people you would ever want to meet. He was not the typical jock. He did not go to UCLA to just play football, he came for the education. His enthusiam for UCLA over the years has been incredible. While he may now be known to the younger generation of Bruin fans as "the towel guy" there is much more to Coach K and is involvement with UCLA football.

He also hold the distinction of being the only undefeated coach in UCLA history when he was the interim coach that lead the Bruins to a win in the Las Vegas Bowl after Toledo was let go.

Coach K
I didn't mean to diminish whatever he's done in the past.  Currently, it's my understanding that he's the academic guy, and doesn't have a meaningful role regarding matters on the field.

by Menelaus on Jan 3, 2008 10:31 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Second that
I worked in the athletic department when I was a student.  I could tell Coach K genuinely cared about the young men on the team.

He may have become the academic liasion when Toledo became coach.

I hope he's cleaned out his office
He's a terrible OC and I couldn't imagine RN even giving him serious consideration. Does anyone think he'll get hired anywhere else?

by OutOThsWrld on Jan 3, 2008 9:20 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

May be
Tyrone will call him? He sounds desperate these days.

by bluestreet on Jan 3, 2008 9:21 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Note
That it doesn't say WR coach, but "position yet to be determined"...  Seems odd not to come out and say coaching WRs as that is where he has all his experience.

Might he coach special teams?  RBs?

by Free the 16 on Jan 3, 2008 2:39 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I'm thinking special teams
We need a special teams coach, and my guess is we won't appoint a WR coach until we chose an OC.
