Wow, just wow.

this is fucking insane
we can't play defense anymore because they are calling everything against us and we have three players in four trouble.

just about done!
Big props to WKU, they can clearly ball. Once these underdogs hit the round of 16 they are dangerous, they know they can play.

Big props to Keefe stepping up as well! As usual I didn't watch the full game but it's great to see these guys filling gaps. When you can win with such a bad performance from Collison you know you got something! Compare this to last year, where when Afflalo had a bad game (for example, against Florida in the FF), the air was sucked out of the team. So it's really great to see a victory here!

I'll take the win, obviously, you know, blowout wins are great against the #16 seed and all... but UNC is doing it against good teams like Arkansas and Washington State... if this team wants to reach its full potential it has to raise its game and fast. Xavier is a great team that Pomeroy has ranked #16... Texas A&M is #18.

With due respect to WSU
They weren't all that and a bucket of chicken - they play tough, but they aren't on the level of the Tarheels or even Stanford.  North Carolina still isn't impressing me that much.

Then again I hate them with a passion.  About as much as I hate Notre Dame, $UC and Duke.

Amazing performance by WKU
When down by 21 at half, 99% of viewers would've believed it was over (me being one of them). But they showed great poise in what was likely the most frustrating opening start to a second half for a Bruin fan. Hats off to a very talented team, Lee and Brazelton have nothing to hang their head about.

I'm sure the UCLA critics will be all over the near-collapse, but how many teams do you see lose their All-American point guard and have the next best option teeter with 4 fouls and still manage to win. Gutsy win, applause for both teams.

Some observations
The zebras were calling it tight, not what you want to see in the tourney.
The Bruins didn't handle the press well, I'm sure CBH will be addressing that.

WKU, well done.  A very solid game, never gave up.  That is one well coached team.

Regarding the refs...
What I saw, it did seem one-sided to me.  But the stat sheet shows more fouls were called on them and we shot more free throws.

But that's because
of the end of the game?  When they had to foul?

most of their fouls in the first half
was when they fouled k-love when he's going for the shot. I think at least two of the fouls on DC were ticky-tacks. A lot of fouls tho when we lose the ball and go for the steal.

Spread was 12.5 and the refs allowed those toppers to squeak in below that.

Even since December - Roll's final blowout
What happened tonight was our doomsday scenario. It had been on my mind over these months, and honestly scared me to death. The lack of any quality perimeter depth was something that I thought would eventually become an issue in this season. Thanks to the calls, that happened tonight.

Our ability to pull through w/o DC, and Shipp and Westy both playing w/4 for a significant period of time, against an opponent as driven (and good) as these guys were, and come out on top is such a relief.

by bruinhoo on Mar 27, 2008 9:45 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Looks like the UCLA referee conspiracy theory is
finally debunked.  That was the most one-sided game I have seen in some time from the refs' point of view.  Collison, Shipp and Westy probably average 2 fouls each over the season and somehow tonight Collison fouls out and Shipp and Westy have 4!!! Those calls were atrocious.  I better not hear another word from the worthless MSM about how the refs are bailing us out.  The refs did their best to derail us tonight--basically contributing 14-16 points to WKU out of our 20 point halftime lead.

by FUSC on Mar 27, 2008 9:45 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Fouls
Collison averages about 1 foul/game (33 in 30 games)
Shipp comes in a bit under 2/game, and Westbrook st about 2.5/game

Lots of thoughts. I'll limit myself to 4
First time in my memory UCLA looked worse in the 2nd half than in the 1st half.  Overconfidence?

James Keefe!  Guess he deserves that that playing time.

Others have made this point already, but I seem to remember people complaining that UCLA gets all the calls.  Hmm...

Josh Shipp...  Throughout his slump I have had a feeling that there would be a time that we would need him in the tournament, and I wondered if he would step up.  Boy did he ever.  Wow.  He didn't score much today, but talk about picking your spots!

by jlazarus on Mar 27, 2008 9:45 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Guess again, J..
Shipp had 14 points 3 rebs and 1 assist. He was 5-9 from the field, 2-3 for threes including two huge rally-killing shots from behind the arc, and he was doing the last 6 or 7 minutes of the 2nd half on 4 fouls.

Issues
I love the Bruins, I love Howland, I love this team.  I believe we will get by Xavier.  I don't give us much chance in the Final Four.  We gave up 58 points the second half.  Our guards were mediocre at best when trapped, and scored only 10 points from the field for the game.  They were over-matched against a 12 seed.  I have no idea why Collison thinks he will be a high NBA pick.  Simply too inconsistent.  Regardless, we will get to the Final Four again, and yes, anything can happen, but in watching the other teams, we are out of sync.  Thank God for Love, and wow...Keefe.

Possibly a little too critical
of our guard play.  DC had an off night, but RW stepped up.  Any team playing in the Sweet 16 can ball, and WKU has great shooters who can light it up from the 3.  I don''t think it looks so bleak.  Hopefully, DC got his clunker out of the way.

by uclachem87 on Mar 27, 2008 9:55 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Umm
Well, I'm no expert, but I suspect our guards are at least slightly better than "mediocre", even when trapped, and I have to speculate that one of the reasons Collison thinks he may be a high NBA draft pick is that many, many people who know a LOT more about this than I do--and obviously more than YOU do--think he's THE BEST POINT GUARD IN THE COUNTRY.

They win by 41, it's just not fair, they win by 3, it's the refs, they win by 10, they're "inconsistent."

They still keep winning, though, don't they?

Good Grief.

how can you refer to UCLA and yourself as "we"...that was really disheartening and really pissed me off after gutting out a really hard fought game.  Losing your point gaurd is tough, this team is good and played tough, they left it all on the court...im extremely impressed with the way we fought back tonight.

I'll say though we have to work on beating the press this weak though!

O.A.

by Ollie on Mar 27, 2008 9:52 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

They controlled the tempo in 2nd half
No question they called the shots in the second half.  Recipe for beating UCLA could be an up tempo game and drive on the guards.  We need to stop reaching and play D with our feet to keep the guards out of foul trouble.  Was scary with DC on bench.  If a team can figure out how to press like WKy and keep us from hitting Love at center court we could see trouble.  However, what those teams forget is CBH will have an answer in force by next game.

Kudos to Keefe but...
Lets not forget Westy.  Played huge in last few minutes and with four fouls.  He made some nice shots in the first half that helped build a big lead that it turned out we needed.

Amazing that we praise everyone for the double doubles and even Keefe gets potg, all the while KLove is absolutely dominant, stays out of foul trouble, breaks the press, helps pace the tempo of the O, and anchors the middle of the D.

Bring on XU.  Lets get to San Antonio!

Don't get called for ticky tack fouls.  Not exactly something we can control given the type of defense we play. Hard to play defense when the refs have your hands tied behind your back.

give more money to the refs? just kidding...
the traps were way much quicker during the second half. most of the points came from the turnovers. plus we also need to avoid fouling after we lose the ball. our guards were tentative to guard, especially in transition, against the 3pters coz of the foul trouble. the turnovers killed us more than the fouls tho. and we did rushed it when we were pressed. now, that i'm calmer, i can analyze the game better, coz i was mad at the refs the whole game.

I don't have a problem with Collison's game
Everyone is entitled and the fact that Keefe stepped up proves how strong our team is. I just am worried when I see our guys struggle against WKU while UNC blows out Washington State and Louisville throttles Tennessee (though, obviously, we wouldn't see both of them the rest of the way). plus i dont think the refs are not gonna call the
next games like this. on the previous game (wvu vs. xavier), two players on each teams fouled out, one was joe alexander who had as much impact to wvu as collison was to us. expect collison to bounce back, he was hindered the whole game with the press but still found ways to bring the ball to the other side of the court.

I watched the Xavier game too, and they didn't have that good of a time against WVU - AND they went into overtime with TWO key players fouling out.

I think it will be a close game, but I have faith we will prevail and cut the nets.
