Kahlil Bell Elevated From Bears Practice Squad

The Bears promoted running back Kahlil Bell from the practice squad today after placing Garrett Wolfe (lacerated kidney) on injured reserve.

Bell, an undrafted rookie free agent from UCLA, could see time on special teams and will move into the role of third running back behind starter Matt Forte and backup Adrian Peterson.
.....
"I'm just happy to be here," Bell said. "It's been a dream since I've been a little kid to be at this level. If I get the opportunity to contribute, I'll be living the dream."

Bears coach Lovie Smith offered high praise for Bell.

"Kahlil has been around here for a while," Smith said. "Whenever you're on the practice squad, you go against the No. 1 defense. Good football player. We brought him here for a reason.

"Whenever you keep a young running back on your practice squad, he can do some things.Good runner. Good size. He can catch the ball. He can do all the things you want a running back to do."

Arizona State is counting on the sophomore quarterback also being electric when he makes his first start Saturday against UCLA at the Rose Bowl, less than a one-hour drive from where he grew up.

Coach Dennis Erickson confirmed the expected after practice Thursday - that Szakacsy would be ASU's second first-time starting quarterback in as many weeks and third overall in a 4-6 season.

"It's one of those years where we've gone through some things," Erickson said. "At the end of spring, Samson was competing for that No. 1 (job), and he never really got a chance to do anything until his arm was healthy enough. It's more an opportunity with him at full strength compared to half strength."

So when a cluster of New York Jets fans taunted him before Sunday's game at the Meadowlands with a singsong chant of "Over-rated! Over-rated!" this 5-foot-7 Elmo impostor was -- what else? -- tickled.

"It got pretty bad; they almost rattled me," the former UCLA standout said. "I just went over to them and I was like, 'You know what, man, I'm just happy you know my name. Thank you. You've helped me out so much today.' They just looked at me and started laughing.

"It's funny. Kill them with kindness. That's how you stop a trash talker."

And then he just bowls over the opponent on the football field. HT to What's Bruin Blog for directing us to that nice piece.

Pat Forde takes a shot at Petey (emphasis added)

So, bloodthirsty Stanford (2) went for two against the shattered Trojans with less than seven minutes remaining and the score 48-21. Seems Jim Harbaugh wanted to hang half a hundred on Pete Carroll, the coach he's now embarrassed twice in three meetings. The two-point try failed, but Stanford scored again at the 2:19 mark to make it 55-21.

The Dash doesn't expressly condone running it up like that. But The Dash understands, having seen Carroll routinely engage in excessive scoreboard tilting when USC was capable of crushing its opposition.

Now that the Trojans are not, it's hard to feel sorry for them.

Really interesting article in the Wall Street Journal in light of Bill Belichick's "interesting" decision this past football weekend. Apparently his decision was well supported by the number crunchers.

I am usually in the corner of those who are always pleading the coaches to go for it. However, I have to say even with the numbers on his side, I just couldn't come up with anything to justify it. Then again, if I am Patriots fan, I would give Belichick the same kind of deference I give Coach Ben Howland.
