Around SBN: Race to the Roses & BCS Bowl Predictions

It's Time to Do It Again

That was disgusting.

And, the streak continues.

That's right, Washington State has won three consecutive games at the Rose Bowl.

They've also beaten the Bruins 8 out of the last 11 times.

UCLA has been downright owned by Washington-freaking-State for a little more than a decade.

So, we've been here before - all too often.  But, even though the opportunity was squandered, something good actually happen once when we lost to Washington State.  Remember this guy?

Almost four years ago, we witnessed the last game that Bob Toledo ever coached for UCLA.  It was a 27-48 loss to Washington State at the Rose Bowl on December 7, 2002.  Two days later, Toledo was dismissed, and this article appeared in the campus newspaper:

UCLA head football coach Bob Toledo was fired Monday, two days after the Bruins (7-5, 4-4 Pac-10) finished the season with a 48-27 loss to Pac-10 champion Washington State (10-2, 7-1). ...

"I felt a change in leadership was necessary," said first-year UCLA athletic director Dan Guerrero, addressing the media Monday. ...

"I did not want to create a situation where going into next year the first transgression that one of our kids may have, or the first bad call a coach would make, would dredge up some really negative things in this program," Guerrero added. "Our student-athletes didn't deserve that."  ...

"We want every one of those games to be competitive," Guerrero said. "What is important in the last two games... is that our players were prepared and played hard and what that shows is the gap between our program and those two programs that exist. We need to close that gap." ...

"The tough part of this whole thing was it was Bob Toledo, and he is a good man," Guerrero said.

"We want to have a national caliber program here, certainly top 25 every year," he added.

According to another report:

"We need to raise the bar, we need to start winning Pac-10 championships again," Guerrero said at a campus news conference.

At the time, I was pretty happy with Dan Guerrero.  He made the right decision.  He knew that, despite the fact that Toledo was a nice man, UCLA had higher goals, and a change in leadership was required to attain them.

Dear Mr. Guerrero:  it's time to do it again.

As we all know, on this day, October 28, 2006, Karl Dorrell's Bruins lost 15-37 to Washington State at the Rose Bowl.

As in 2002, this should be our head football coach's last game at UCLA.

Mr. Guerrero, please.  We don't need to wait for KD to match Toledo by losing his fourth straight game to Southern Cal before making a change.  You must be seeing the same things we are.  Do the right thing, just as you did once before.

Consider this your post-game thread.

GO BRUINS.

THANK YOU!
On behalf of all Bruins who care about UCLA football, I hope your words are heard in Westwood.  I know I am going to the OSU game just so I can boo Dorrell everytime he even takes a breath.  I will not, however, boo the team, for it is not their fault they have little talent...Who can blame them for quitting when your head coach has the football acumen of aGeorge W. on foreign policy...By the way, where are those Dump Dorrell t-shirts.  I would love to wear one at Pauley when I go to the Humboldt State Game and the Rose Bowl that Saturday???

Obejctively,
we aren't that good and it is no surprise that WSU beat us this afternoon.

In the first half on offense, we never really got started, and in the red-zone, we never finished and had to settle for field goals. Cowan is only adequate. He can develop some rhythm on occasion, but the talent around him doesn't seem to be enough. (We certainly don't have anything close to a Drew Olsen this year.)

On defense, the team made a good effort, but when you look at how our talent matched up, WSU had equal or better stuff. For example, Van is too small to cover one-on-one. He usually finds himself in a mismatch against a taller player. It is inevitable that he will lose the battle. I'm not picking on Van, but he is only typical of the kinds of problems that UCLA has in talent (or lack thereof).

I actually thought that Dorrell made a better effort as a sideline coach in this game. He actually seemed to be personally involved in the game decisions, and his interaction with the players was more visible.

Is Dorrell the best coach that UCLA could get? No, but with the current talent pool and against the PAC-10 which seems to have parity across the conference (with the exception of Stanford, where the shelf is empty, and SC which this year has immature but superior talent ), UCLA is a mediocre team getting mediocre results. If you fire Dorrell at this point, don't expect anything much better to happen. We have a mediocre team and a mediocre coach, and (surpise!), we're getting mediocre results.

I would gladly trade two losing seasons for one New Years Bowl game appearence if it meant firing Dorrell.

Tonight's game was so bad I was booing on the gamethread. Most of us were. Over 10% of all comments on today's game included booing. That's staggeringly bad.

Obviously
"If you fire Dorrell at this point, don't expect anything much better to happen. We have a mediocre team and a mediocre coach, and (surpise!), we're getting mediocre results."

No UCLA football fan in his right mind thinks that this team will magically turn it around this year or even next year with a new head coach.  The goal is to find someone who can eventually make UCLA a powerhouse football program.  Obviously that takes time and the improvement won't come right away.  There is no quick fix.

Karl Dorrell is not the person who can eventually turn UCLA into a consistent winner.  That's why he should be fired as soon as possible.  The sooner we get the rebuilding process under way the better.  The longer we wait to pull the plug the longer it will take UCLA to have any sort of chance at being good in football.

Very well said
and very true.  I went to the game today and my voice is pretty weak from all the booing I did, this coach needs to be removed NOW!  The team essentially quit in the 4th quarter, showing everyone the kind of "this is the best team I have had at UCLA" team Dullard thinks he has.  This guy really needs to be fired Sunday morning, I wouldn't even wait for Sunday Mass to be over!  Dullard has obviosuly lost all control of the program, if he really ever had any.  Does anyone remember when Dullard said he was going to be in contention for the Pac-10 title this year!   This guy and his entire staff is one big joke and I would be willing to take 1 or 2 5-6 seasons just to get rid of this clown and his cicrus.

Wow
Hi everyone, longtime lurker finally decided to get an account and post. I was at the game tonight (well until the wsu scored to make it 29) and was completely and utterly disgusted as well. At that point, my party decided to leave, along with a LOT of other fans. The entire game, you could hear everyone discontent at the the coaching and I don't think anyone who was at the game tonight can honestly say that UCLA football is moving forward with Dorrell. We continue to regress and this needs to stop now. It's not fair to current students (like myself), to the alumni, or just any UCLA fan in general to continue to watch this program deteriorate. Hopefully, Dan Guerrero makes the right decision SOON and no other student has to cheer for a team lead my an incompetent coach.

No committment to football
from our athletic department. None. Never has been. That is why we are in the position were in now. Sadly I don't even think 4-8 will get KD fired. In fact, I think it will take 2, maybe (gulp) 3 more years of this crap to get him out. I am not kidding. When has this athletic department actually shown a committment to football??? And you know what? That 10-2 year was the WORST thing to happen, because it bought KD another 1-2 years. I really hope I am wrong, but if you have been following UCLA football for as long as I have, you know what I am talking about. I have got a few glasses of cabernet in me now, trying to drown my sorrows, but hey, ding-dong the witch is dead, no SUC in the title game this year (a little bit to smile about, heh?).

by godblesstyus95 on Oct 28, 2006 9:01 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I have faith in our AD.
Aside from hiring Dorrell in the first place, Guerrero has been great for UCLA sports.  I trust him at this point to make the correct decision regarding our football team.  If Guerrero was really truthful in his words following the firing of Toledo, then Dorrell doesn't have much time left at UCLA.

That almost makes it worse
That southern cal is so clearly ripe for the picking right now. We have them at home. This is KD's "best team ever". The streak should end this year, but the  meltdown has begun, and KD has given me no reason to believe that he will inpsire this team to anything resembling success.

This is the year to knock em off...
too bad KD will be "leading" the troops into battle!

by godblesstyus95 on Oct 28, 2006 9:11 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oh yeah
another possible avenue for KD to get canned that has nothing to do with his record this year or next year or however long we are cursed with him as coach, is if our players tune him out. If he loses control of the team, I believe that will be the end of KD.

by Tydides on Oct 28, 2006 9:14 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I like your optimism!
but when it comes to UCLA football, I am a realist. As long as KD keeps his players out of handicap parking spots and bar fights, he ain't goin' anywhere for at least 1-2 years. If I am wrong, I'll be the first to post that I don't know shit.

by godblesstyus95 on Oct 28, 2006 9:19 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

That the players will wake up and see
what we all see and rally around each other rather than their coach is my only hope. I don't see a mutiny happening though, and I, like you, don't see KD going anywhere for at least another year. I just don't think Morgan Center has the balls to deal with the firestorm of ignorant MSM criticism for firing a coach a year removed from a 10-2 season.

by Tydides on Oct 28, 2006 9:30 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree
UCLA has NEVER had commitment to the football program, we though when DG fired Toledo (another joke of a coach) he was serious about contending for Pac-10 football titles year in and year out as he promised.  But, alas, this isn't the case and if UCLA fans and alums want to see a change, the only way they will see it is to withhold $.  This speaks volumes to UCLA.  The more and more $ being withheld, the more and more you will see movement.  But the withholding has to be significant in size and number or your right, nothing will happen for 2 or even 3-4 years.  I have said this before on BN and will continue to say it.  Withhold ALL monies from UCLA and you will be almost shocked as to how fast they start firing people.  I'm doing my part, I give thousands to the University each year, but NO MORE, not until they make a change.  Compared to the total UCLA gets, this probably isn't enough to sway any of the decision makers, but as this bucket grows, they will be swayed and quickly.

Well
I just got back from the bar.

And I have to say I was the most calm person (seriosly) in the UCLA crowd. Pretty much everyone had a lot ... of uhm ... nice things to say about KD.

From the tv shots of the Rose Bowl it was pretty clear how the Bruin Nation feels about KD.

The question is how long will this American water boarding torture er I mean having to watch UCLA football with KD in charge will continue.

Should be another interesting week.

I am not even upset anymore.

Thanks for putting this up M.

Dan Guerrero Can Be The Best AD Ever
if he dumps Dorrell. Think about it.  He could be responsible for turning the BBall program around, the baseball program around, AND the football program around ... with one stroke of genius. Imagine it. We would sing his praises for YEARS!! Of course, he would have to also commit $$ to bring in an actual experienced winning coach, but attracting a coach to UCLA should not be hard ... and if Cal can pay $4 million for its coaching staff DG has the political cover to do the same to attract a great football coach and staff to UCLA.

Let's be positive about DG and give him the chance to be great!

I truly hope for a great season, but if we dont have one we must dumpdorrell.com

by DumpDorrell on Oct 28, 2006 9:28 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

DG
I agree.

We need to be positive about him.

I think people make the common mistake of thinking KD was DG's hire.

He wasn't.

KD was one of the three finalists based on a search conducted by Donahue reject Bob Field (because DG was focused on hoops). Fields came up with Riley, Robinson, and KD.

And DG wanted Riley out of those 3, which was the right choice (out of those 3).

But it was Carnesale and Vice Chancellor Blackmun who wanted KD. They were impressed with KD evoking memories of Jackie Robinson and Arthur Ashe.

KD was Carnesale's social statement. And DG being the new guy on the block had to go with Carnesale.

This time I think DG is looking for the right opportunity and wants to give KD all the chances he gets for PC reasons.

But KD is such a douchebag that he will blow it. He looks scared and lost.

The key is to get the message across that KD is a worthless piece of sh!t even if he beats a over-rated Southern California football team.

But we need to keep the chatter up. Because it helps DG.

Now only if the students can put together a protest infront of Morgan Center, it will help DG out a lot.

What did we expect?
What did we expect? Consistency? Polish? Hard-nosed effort? C'mon really?

I'm new to BN and I'm a long time reader - you guys do a great job and are loyal and passionate - everything a sports program (college or pro) would want from its fans.

You cheer when we win, but you make comments that are supportive even when we lose. You stood by Howland last year in the beginning, and so did I. You could tell despite the losses that he was building a program and instiling toughness and discipline that was evaporated by Lavin.

But its really clear to me that 4 years ago when Guerrero hired Dorrell he took a big risk, and that risk has backfired

KD is a good team guy - he'll go out and do what he's told and execute. But he doesn't have the toughness (read: meanness at times) to be a true leader. His expressionless flat demeanor is a drawback in the college level. How are his pupils to feel his passion for the game if he himself can't communicate it? Neither does he innovate or develop his players.

KD has been coasting for 4 years now - he has delivered consistent mediocrity. The talent pipeline overall is drying up for UCLA and we are surrendering prospects we had a good shot at now to SC, and Cal. Would you want to go to UCLA now as a highly rated prospect? Probably not. How many 5-star prospects other than a Mormon mission transfer have we landed in 3 years since he's been here? How many have Cal or SC? You can say the deck is stacked against him, but that's bs - football is a tough game, people kick you until you get back up and fight back and prove yourself - a facsimile for life. That's how program turnarounds happen. Others have done so, why not here at UCLA?

KD is NOT a good manager of games either - consistently dumb game management mistakes are made often at the worst times. OC's and DC's are blamed, run out of town. But really, who is really responsible?

This man was a reach when he was hired - overpromoted beyond his experience (WR coach? Not even an OC/DC?) for a major football program.

We are ultimately held back by our administration and our measly pay packages. If Cal can pay Tedford up near a million a year with incentives, redo their stadium, and build a new practice facility - I ask you why UCLA with its $2 billion endowment goal can't. (I think its 2 bil, someone double check if I'm wrong, but I'm not far off).

Guys and gals, face facts and the truth. UCLA FB is an also-ran in the Pac-10 now. A middling mediocre undsteady program that is a couple of bad breaks (injuries, transfers, suspensions) away from a lower-tier team.

In college it all comes down to the coach. He sets the tone for everything. I'm a Niners fan and you can see what Mike Nolan (pro example albeit) is doing in SF vs. what Donahue and Erickson did. Just watching a game, yes they suck, you can see they are developing and maturing gradually slowly.

We haven't developed a program in 4 years under Dorrell. We haven't learned from our mistakes. Our recruiting talent is dwindling vs. SC/Cal. Our coaches aren't doing the best job of developing talent for the next level which further entices recruits to come in a virtuous cycle.

Its time to cut the cord and bring in a coach that is a program builder. My vote (if he'll have us) is Butch Davis. See the implosion of Miami without him? Just someone who is tough, but fair and gains the respect of many of the spoiled, me-first high-school athletes of today. Toughness, grit, passion, but fairness and intelligence. Someone we can all respect win or lose. The results will follow - we all deep down know this.

Thanks
Thanks Nestor. I graduated in 96 - we had some good years against SC and with the program overall. Times were good back then, we won a bball national championship which was amazing (never forget Musberger giving it Dickie V that year when we crushed Duke by 30+ points in Feb. - one of the greatest UCLA sports moments for me)

We weren't a national championship contender in football, but we could expect to be a regional power and contend for a PAC-10 championship almost every year.

Then Pete Carroll happened and came in like a snake oil salesman and charmed, cheated, lied, etc. He does all these things (Reggie Bush payments, LenDale White, Dwayne Jarrett's crime blotter?). Yet he has won, and marginalized our program in the process.

We need a response. Just as Tressel brought back Ohio St. after John Cooper stagnated and lost to Michigan. We need our own Jim Tressel.

I don't think just plain bitching about stuff accomplishes anything. I think this site works best as a forum to educate fans and Bruin alums on the why and what and how. Why are we here in Dorrell Limbo, what he's doing that just plain stinks, and how can we extract this program out of its funk.

Otherwise all this is just one big vent session. Sorry, just being honest.

Thanks again for keeping this all together. Look forward to hearing your response(s)

That just sucked
Just got home from the RB and I imagine you all have said all that needs to be said. With about 11 minutes to go, the stands started emptying on the pressbox side. Our seats are on the 50 but up under the pressbox. Scores of people were yelling epithets up at the pressbox and jeering whatever stiffs were up there sleeping. By about six minutes to go, there were rows and rows and rows of empty seats. Season-ticket holders who had been there for decades longer than I have were carping the entire game. Afterward, all anybody was saying was Dorrell needs to go. I've never seen so much anger and frustration.

I have to believe program officials know what's going on. At halftime, the band stood in formation until the scoreboard finished the entire -- that's right, the entire -- clip of the last four minutes of the basketball team's win over Gonzaga. It's pretty pathetic when that's your halftime highlight (meaning no disrespect to Howland and his boys).

It's ironic you should post something on Guerrero dumping Toledo with a bowl game still to play. At this point, I'd be thrilled if he'd dump Dorrell and name the same interim coach as his replacement; after all, doesn't Ed Kezirian have the all-time record for winning percentage of any Bruins coach in any sport? He won't be any worse.

Frankly, KD should man up and tender his resignation Monday morning.

sorry
I didn't bother to read anyone else's comments.  I sat in the alumni section (2H, Row 75) and 3 rows in front of us sat 12 high school students waving $c towels and wearing their sweatshirts.  Even though on this saturday their team lost, this band of desperados was able to effectively shout down the home crowd.  People yelled like maniacs at first, but eventually there was no response for their taunts.  How could there be?  Everything they said was true.  These were high school kids from the South Bay! What made things even more untolerable was the mass exodus by Bruin fans midway thru the 4th qtr.  The game was finished.  I sat stupified.  I have not endured such harassment since $c demolished us at the RB in '02.  This is unconscionable.  Countless alumni were screaming for the ouster of the head coach, and I see no reason why he should remain. No longer is this about lofty expectations, or a rebuilding year.  Karl Lavin must be terminated immediately. Again, sorry for the semi-incoherent ramblings, but I am numb....

KD petitions NCAA for the following rule changes
  1. Field goals should be 6 points and not 3.
  2. Each team gets unlimited timeouts.
  3. "Going for it" on 4rth down is prohibited, only punts and field goals are allowed.
  4. Being unpredictable on offense is prohibited.  The offense must tell the defense what play has been called before the ball is snapped.

My Karl Dorrell Costume

The hilarious part about sporting my Karl Dorrell costume to the game was the amount of dirty looks that I got before the game and the number of cheers I got in the stands after the game. For some reason, it seems like some of our fans were still fine with Dorrell before the game, but a lot of alums were chanting "Fire Dorrell!" at the end of the game. I Hopefully this loss finally convinces the Morgan Center that we need a change. We need this guy gone ASAP. Not even at the end of the season. Let's get him out this week. Our fans and our players deserve better.

This whole football thing is so sad.  Now the classes of 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, and soon to be 2007 will have seen absolutely ZERO wins vs. suc during their time at UCLA.  Pathetic.  Dorrell and the clowns in the athletic department have officially ruined football for me.

I've booed our team's way twice in 15 years...
...and once was tonight.

Karl Dorrell seems to be a decent man.

But he is only a decent coach.

That's it.

In every game it seems, there is a play where the team simply does NOT know what to do, and has to burn a costly timeout to do what other teams are prepared to do at a moment's notice.

The 4th and 1 play resulting in a poorly thrown pass to Pitre on the left side?  THAT WAS IT.

The Notre Dame was not a "moral victory."

It was a LOSS.

Worse, it was not a moral win, but a loss of MORALE.

Our D didn't show like it has most of this year, but given that it actually HAS shown far more often than not this year, I can let it slide.

But the team, overall, is getting WORSE.

I will still believe they CAN win each game this year, because I am a fan and I love my school and its people.

But I no longer have faith that they WILL win any given game.

And the clock ticks...

Re: The defense
I don't want to make too many excuses for them because the truth is that they didn't bring it today just like KD and the offense, but if defense is truly about effort, then I can see how that effort wanes in the face of an inept offense that doesn't reward your stops with points or even extended drives.

This is not like last year, when the offense carried the team. Sure it might have been irritating to the offense to have to keep scoring to have a chance at winning, but at least offense brings fun and excitement to the game. They wanted to go out there and air the ball out, or watch MJD go wild. Defense is smashmouth "let's do our damn job and get off the field". One unit should savor their opportunity to be on the field, the other should want to get off the field ASAP. If I were the defense, I'd be pretty sick of this crap too, getting stops only to be back on the field 3 minutes later.

defensive weakness exposed tonight
I was at the ND game and we played virtually the entire game in man coverage and did not get burned.

WSU burned us multiple times when we were in man and we switched to more zone coverages in 2nd half.  Once we were in zone, we did not have the extra bodies to get a pass rush and Brinks did an excellent job of finding the open man.

If we can't play man coverage, then you are looking at last year's read-and-react type of defense.

PC missed open receiver on 4rth down pass to Pitre
Deep receiver, not sure if it was a wideout or TE, was behind the safety on that play.

Going for it on 4rth down on our half of the field is questionable.  Not going for it on 4rth down when we are on the 11 is also questionable.  We should be kicking 1-2 FGs max per game and should be trying for the endzone when we get that close.

Very Nice!
maybe a skull and crossbones over the football might get the point across too. Or maybe our record vs. winning teams. Or the number of times we've beaten 'SC (you get the idea)

I'm willing to do the leg work....
Let's get the t-shirt perfected. Can anyone spruce up the proof? Contact me at alcor805@yahoo.com for the bmp file.

Like it
Make it true blue though. If it's True Blue the Students can wear that rather than the Den Shirts.

Or a dark navy blue with gold writing so it's reminiscent to the "Save Bruin Basketball: Lose Lavin" shirts.

Proof
I'm designing it on a transparent background so we can make the t-shirts whatever color we want. I'm using Logo Design Studio.
