More Questions After Another Scrimmage Win

Bruins with another scrimmage win against a bottom feeding Pac-10 team. The defense looked amazing against one of the worst offensive teams in the nation. We will take it though.

But the concern still remains with this boring, lackluster, and uninspiring offense. Olson went out with an injury and we will keep our fingers crossed that it is nothing serious.  However, we still failed to take advantage of an efficient performance by Pat Cowan (20-29-203-2td-0int) by not putting away Arizona early. We could have put the game away much earlier if our play calling was more aggressive (i.e. settling for FGs instead of TDs). It took a sensational pick-6 from a freshmen CB to put this game away. Sooner or later the lack of killer insticts in offense will come back to haunt us. Oh well.

Starting next weekend we are not going to have any margin for error. But to me right now after five games in this season there are more questions than answers about Dorrell's program. What are your thoughts, reactions? This is our post game (or for lot of us Dodger in game) open thread.

GO BRUINS.

Wow the Dodgers are disapointing
Anyway, to me it seems like there are two Bruin teams out there.  The D is fired up and playing with intensity ... through their play you can see they're well coached.

The O is another story.  You could see there was an effort there today to mix up the play calling ... but there's still something missing in the creativity of our offensive coaches.  The killer instinct to stick it in the endzone isn't there.  I hope we put it together, but it's frustrating watching so many offensive weapons going unused.

What's the status on Ben?
Sorry, guys (and BB), I missed the game.  Have we heard about the extent of Ben's injury.  Did Pat look okay under center?

More importantly, were the Cal uniforms as bad as I have been led to believe?

I need answers, people.

Go Bruins...F@#$% Southern Cal... UCLA Fight Fight Fight!

Ben
More tests will be done Monday.  Say a prayer for him.

Yes, the Cal uniforms are just as bad, if not worse than they have been described.

Thoughts
After Ben went out, I thought to myself I dont care how it comes, we just need a W.  The theme seems to be questions, and one we need to ask is, does the offense run more efficiently with Cowan than it does with Olson?  Pat makes desisions more quickly, is a little bit better rolling out of the pocket, and isn't afraid to go downfield.  I love Ben, but he seems to be an extension of Dorrell in the way he's so scared to throw the ball downfield.  Pat made some smooth checkdowns too... he just seems to be a bit more natural out there than Ben.  My point is if Ben is out for an extended period of time, Pat might be what we need to wake the offense up.  I'm hoping Ben is fine, but if he comes back, I think Dorrell needs to not hesitate to go with Cowan if the offense stalls again.

Other thoughts -

It was nice to see the WR's make more plays, but we need to get Terrence Austin in the game.

Running game needs to get better.  The holes weren't really there for Markey.

Our best two players right now are Justin Hickman and Trey Brown.  Hickman is almost unstoppable, I can't believe how well this guy is playing.

Reggie Carter is getting better every week, him and Verner will be all-conference performers someday.

Does anyone know what Christian Taylor's injury was exactly?  I missed that.

Oregon didn't look impressive at all, but they will have a sense of urgency after their loss tonight.  We need to go up there and steal one.

I hate to say I told you so
I said Cowan was the better of the two quaterbacks right now ( See my page blog entry, "Ben the Canadian") and today he proved it.   Impressive start, two touchdowns, 200+ yards in two 1/2 quarters of play.  Ben looks the part of quarterback but doesn't play it while Cowan stepped up and showed us his abilities.  AND by the look of things the coaching staff trust him more than Olson, as we saw by the aggressive play calling in today's game.  The truth is  Cowan should of always been the starter.  The reason why he wasn't is b/c they are banking on Olson to be a better starter next year.  Can you blame them ?

by bruinwalk55 on Oct 7, 2006 9:04 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I don't know if it's the coaches
I think it's Ben.  He always thinks twice before throwing the ball downfield.  Cowan has a bit more of a gunslinger's mentality.  Cowan seems like he has better timing with the recievers too.

Damn, Nestor
i agree that there are still alot of questions, but today was a pretty good win for us.  there were some good things in this game, too: payback victory, Cowan played well, we opened up the offense, and we played excellent defense.
Therefore, I think we need to be more positive about our team for at least a day.  So, let's enjoy the victory a little, even if AZ sucks.

Comparison to Last Year
Even though the Wildcats were in the game right up to the time when Verner stepped in front of his receiver, we were in control for the entire game.  Compared to any of our "comeback" wins last year, I feel much better about the way we played today and I hope that this translates into something good against better competition...

a little bit harsh summary in my opinion.
and I usually think bruinsnation is right on the money but I am feeling good tonight:

1st, sc looks more beatable by the week
2nd Washington is not that bad as it turns out
3rd we lost our starting QB and WON

4th and most importantly, some big hits tonight from our D.

I have been cranky lately and I have found the cure to be watching the D hit people hard.   It is amazingly therapeutic.

I am really kind of excited about this season for the first time since Utah win.

AGREE ON ALL YOUR POINTS
We still have a long way to go, but our D will keep us in almost every game, and maybe we can steal a W somewhere unexpected.....

by godblesstyus95 on Oct 7, 2006 9:53 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Maybe?
We better steal a win somewhere unexpected, otherwise we will not get to 9 wins and a win over southern cal.

I'd say at this point we are still underdogs to Oregon, ND, Cal, southern cal. 7-5 is not going to cut it.

by scittles on Oct 7, 2006 10:07 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

ABSOLUTELY CORRECT
Oregon is vulnerable, but they play lights out at home.
Cal will be very difficult.
ND only beat Stanford 31-10. Will they take us lightly?
SC....well, that's a must win...
Of course we can't screw around with WSU and OSU in our house....
9 and 3 with a win v. SC would be very sweet. Wishful thinking? Maybe. But there's hope....

Rest of the Season Predictions
7 games left.  We will probably be underdogs in 4 of them (Oregon, ND, Cal, USC).  We need to split the 4 and win out against the other 3 to make it to 9 wins.

We better find some kind of running game to keep the defense off the field or we will wear down esp. with this attacking style of play.   I want to see more of Moline straight ahead to complement the play action pass.  Today was the first time I ever saw Cowan play and he makes very convincing play action fakes.   He also made a few throws to the backside on rollouts.

by MarcoTheBruin on Oct 7, 2006 11:33 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If our D
keeps playing like it has been playing, I think we will have a chance to win 2 of the 4 games you mentioned. Unfortunately if our offense doesn't improve, one of those winnable games just might turn into an L. We have to get that killer instinct and turn out the lights on these lesser teams, or else teams like UDUb may just steal one from us.

by godblesstyus95 on Oct 7, 2006 11:39 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

how about...
the zebras tonight?  they were fucking horrible, i heard we actually had a couple from the oregon oklahoma disaster.  im honestly suprised more players didnt go down with all the late hitting that was going on.  i think at points the refs lost control of the game especially with that bullshit cheap shot they took at christian taylor at the end of the first half, that got no flag.  even ben olson's shot was a little late.  if anything i was impressed with our D even though we were playing Arizona because of the hitting that went on tonight.  horton, keyes, and brown lit people up.

go bruins!

Stoops Should Have Been Flagged
There were numerous instances when Stoops walked onto the field of play to complain to the officials.  In one case UCLA was on the ball ready to snap following a UA fumble, when Stoops walks onto the field to have the officials review the play... unbelievable!

UA is like a poor man's Fresno State when it comes to cheap shots.  I would love to see those two teams play each other just to see who would survive to the end -- kind of like the football equivalent of the steel cage match.

by MarcoTheBruin on Oct 7, 2006 11:43 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Cheap shots
Yeah, I saw one game a few years back when a Fresno player deliberately hit a punt returner as he was making a fair catch and broke his femur or something! Maybe if they expand the Pac10 to the Pac 12 FSU will fit right in with UA!

ben
i just want to say I am ashamed by the lack of faith we are all showing in big ben olsen. We've hyped this kid ever since he stepped foot onto the westwood campus, and now, after a few lackluster performances (due mainly to horrible, uninspiring, and momentum killing play calling)and a semi-decent performance from Pat Cowan against a doormat Pac 10 team with a horrible pass defense, we're giving him the shaft. Ben is the future of this program. Pat is not. There was a reason Ben got the start over this kid and it wasn't just because he had a rocket arm. It was because the coaches (no matter how incompetent and retarded they appear to be) realized that the kid was just... better. Plain and simple. And to toss the best thing that has happened to UCLA football since Cade Mcnown on the bench and watch it waste away, is the worst thing anyone can do. Even if Pat wins against Oregon (very unlikely) and beats Notre Dame (even more unlikely. If Dorrell couldn't outcoach Tyrone Willingham, then I don't see any hope of him slipping by Charlie Weis) Ben Olsen should still get the start. He has the potential and he is the future. Plus, I remember a few weeks back when a certain someone was named national player of the week after torching a Utah defense for 300 yards and three touchdowns. That's 100 yards more than what Pat did today and a touchdown better. How can we just let talent like that go to waste?

by BenIsTheMan on Oct 7, 2006 10:50 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

We all will agree . . .
that Ben is good, potentially great.  Cowan did look good out there and had a nice zip on the ball.  BUT he did make some bad throws that very easily could've been intercepted, so he's not our offensive savior quite yet.  Oregon and ND will blitz him, blitz him and blitz him some more.  They'll be licking their chops to get him frazzled.  If he puts up some decent numbers and doesn't act like he's only played 3 quarters of College football, he be ok out there.  I still think Ben will be the man, but our # 2 looked ok.  Oh yeah, fyi . . it's spelled Olson, with an "o".  Go Bruins!

Whoops
Now I feel really stupid. Thanks for the info on OlsOn.

Re: Ben
While your loyalty to Ben Olson is good and all, I don't see why you don't show the same kind of support to Cowan.  He obviously doesn't have some of the physical gifts that Ben does, but if he's gonna give it his all and get the job done, he deserves just as much a chance as Ben.  I'm not saying bench Ben, I'm just saying let their play on the field sort things out.  We'll probably get at least 1, probably more games from Cowan till Ben is healthy, which should be ample time to see what he can do.  I just don't think Ben should be the starter just because he's Ben, cuz that's not fair at all to Cowan.

by tobias on Oct 7, 2006 11:49 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Ben won the job
in training camp. He is the starter. Cowan did a capable job in securing a W in a winnable game. He deserves kudos. We are fortunate to have a capable backup, but a backup he will remain as long as BO is good to go.

by godblesstyus95 on Oct 7, 2006 11:56 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

What if?
I agree that 1 game does not make a backup a starter.  But what if Cowan wins @Oregon and @ND?  Suddenly our expectations for the season will go up and I do not think that Ben's return (if he is ready) as the starter is automatic.

by MarcoTheBruin on Oct 8, 2006 12:31 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Okay
I'll give you this scenario, If Cowan leads the Bruins to Ws at Oregon and ND, THEN I think there might be a case for PC for starter! Lets see how this unfolds!

by godblesstyus95 on Oct 8, 2006 12:40 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yep...
Benching BO would be about the worst thing Dorrell could do. Yes, PC knows the system better right now as he has had a longer time to study it! He is a redshirt sophmore in his third year at UCLA while Ben is only in his second. That not be a big deal right? Wrong! Does anyone remember last year when we all witnessed the sudden transformation of Drew Olson. All Ben needs is time to get comfortable with this complex (too complex) offense. With Ben, sure we will have to wait a little longer as he adjusts to this type of offense as well as adjusting to the speed of the college game, but there will be a much bigger payoff. With Pat, this will be about as good as it gets. Mediocre.

Ben & Pat
During the spring and summer drills, KD kept saying that the QB competition was very close but everyone knew the starter would be Ben. We all drooled after the Utah game but the next three games made me realize that our expectations of Ben were unrealistic. He has proven to be extremely tentative and lacked confidence -- qualities not befitting a QB at any level.

When Ben went down, I whispered to my friend: "This may be the break we needed." Of course, I do not want any player to sustain an injury, but football can be a funny game and injuries can often produced unexpected or unintended results.

I could not believe how the offense opened up under Cowan. You could see the receivers pick up their game knowing that the ball was starting to fly. Cowan may not be the answer -- he will, no doubt, make mistakes -- but, at least for tonite, there should be no dispute that the O has been revitalized and that's a good thing.

by 78Bruin on Oct 8, 2006 12:13 AM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

How was it revitalized?
Did you look at the stats? 292 yards. 20 points. Stagnation in the second half. Still cannot put the ball in the endzone. I frankly saw no difference except for the playcalling being improved which definately benefited Pat.

by UCLAFreak88 on Oct 8, 2006 10:45 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Play calling
exactly Freak.  It was decent in the first half but it was same ole crap in the second half.

Alterraun Verner
What a nice pick up for the Bruins. Only a 3 star recruit and rated # 49 senior HS cornerback by Rivals.com, he will most certainly warrant discussion for All Pac10 and Freshman All American Honors. Finding these "diamond in the rough" type players will help us take it to the next level and (hopefully)turn the table on SC, who seem to keep raking in the blue chip recruit right and left.

Pass Rush Is Making Everyone Look Good
We have knocked 3 starting QBs out of the game (Rice, Stanford, and UA) and are getting pressure on virtually every passing situation.
