Sun Devil Funnies

So back to football for a bit. Earlier in the week we set up this weekend's game against ASU. Not a lot of excitement about our football team any longer in the Bruins Nation. Yes there is a flicker of hope. We should (emphasis added) beat up on Koetter's craptacular Sun Devils squad, and use a two game winning streak against mediocre Pac-10 teams to get set for one of the weaker Southern California teams in recent year. We have the talent to finish this season with a 3-0 record. It's a matter of our coaching staff to put it all together and save some face in this already lost season.

We are facing an ASU team this weekend which frankly is kind of a joke. I mean they got blown out by a Mike Riley and Matt Moore. They have some talent on their offense, but our defense should be able to handle them considering the way throttled Quinn and co. up in South Bend. The match up really is going to boil down to whether our underachieving offense will get it done against less than mediocre Sun Devils defense. Oh and there is the thing about coaches from both teams being in trouble.

Anyways I have never really cared much about any of the Arizona schools. Sure the Mildcats had a little run with Lavin thanks to some incompetent Peter Dalis hires in Westwood, but now they will become increasingly irrelevant as Coach Howland is building back our Bruins as dominant power of West Coast hoops.

As for ASU - meeh. That's pretty much how I can sum up my sentiments about that university. Their basketball program is a joke and their football program - well I think these preseason billboards from earlier this year pretty much sums it up:

oh and this one:

They were posted on the Wiz back in June, who had this to say:

Talk is cheap. And from the looks of it, so is billboard space around Phoenix. Arizona State, somewhere in the neighborhood of 80-1 to win the national championship, is making rather bold statements in a promotional campaign. "Sun Devil Law" is the theme, and from the looks of it, there appear to be laws on the books that we never knew existed.
So exactly why am I taking my time to write about Arizona State's sorry football program? Well with those billboards in mind, check out what I just spotted in "The House of Heat," an ASU fan blog commenting on UCLA fans effort to Dump Dorrell:
The Bruins are in a tough spot as USC's whipping boy and the stress is starting to show. ASU hoops fans can attest to the frustration of absolute inferiority in the face of one's hated rival, but UCLA has the unfortunate burden of optimism . At least we know ASU basketball sucks and we expect routine beatings on Thursday and Saturday nights throughout the winter and spring, but somewhere along the line UCLA got it to their heads that they deserve more. They have certainly had better success than most Pac-10 teams historically, but how many Bruin head coaches can you name? I can only come up with two- Terry Donohue and apparent job seeker Karl Dorrell- the two most recent coaches. Why can't you just take your powerhouse basketball program and be satisfied? Florida has apparently ruined it for everyone.
Obviously it is not worth our time to point out with specific facts how UCLA has been a two sports school long before Florida showed up on the map with Billy Donovan. Any kid from junior high with basic research skills can get those facts. But it gets better. After ridiculing our football program's history, the very next 'graf reads:
I'm planning on doing another Q & A with the boys at Bruins Nation, so if there are any questions you want answered leave them in the comments section.
We haven't received any email from those guys requesting a Q&A yet.

If the email does come (not sure if there will be any after this post) any ideas on how we should respond?

GO BRUINS.

ROFL
I think Matt Barnes had the best line. It was few years ago ASU student section was heckling our underachieving Lavin bunch. After dishing out a beat down Barnes apparently turned to the ASU student section and yelled out, "look where you go to school."

ASU - who cares.

Helpful hints for UCLA folks
This grammatical correction is generously provided by an ASU student.

subject  Heads up on UCLA Football

Just wanted to give you a heads up on UCLA football.  There is a big and growing movement to Dump Karl Dorrell as football coach.  DumpDorrell.com was Sports Illustrated's Blog of the Week last week, and the petition to Dump Dorrell has gotten exposure in many papers after receiving nearly 700 signatures in the first week or so.  Check the links for details.

I truly hope for a great season, but if we dont have one we must dumpdorrell.com

clarification,
the guy says on his site that we sent him  a "disturbing email" and that we are "feverishly angry."  I guess that's what wanting to be great looks like to a bottom feeder.

lol
yeah nothing like giving a broad brush without providing any evidence to back it up. That will go real well in terms of credibility in blogosphere.

No one will ever confuse ASU
with an academic powerhouse. That blog is absolute proof of that.

Guys, I have it all figured out.
The owner of the blog lives in Richmond, VA.

That's enough for me to prove that I'm sure the guy is batsh*t crazy insane.  That place is a like a Confederate funland amusement park, and with NASCAR.

Talking about a NC or Rose Bowl may be stupid
but at least they are advertising and creating awareness about their football program. If you aren't a big sports fan or a UCLA fan you would have no clue about the UCLA football or basketball teams. I'm amazed at the lack of advertising and marketing that comes from Morgan Center.

Advertising and marketing
there is a strategy to it. and I agree we should do more to embrace our tradition the way ND embraces theirs wrt to their football team.

but in terms of our football program right now we have nothing to sell. and we would look silly if we put up billboards boasting about Rose Bowl and NCs.

ASU just looks cheap and frankly a little trailor trashy when they put up ridiculous bill boards about competing for NCs and Rose Bowls when they haven't done jack for more than a decade.

I agree they look trashy
and I wouldn't want us doing the same. What I would like is some promotion or advertising or marketing or anything that gets the word out to the masses that UCLA is playing a game in any sport.

Just a little FYI
I do remember billboards about five years ago for football in the West LA area.  Having said that, I don't know why the promotions stopped.

Paging Bob Toledo?
"I can only come up with two- Terry Donohue and apparent job seeker Karl Dorrell- the two most recent coaches."

Wow, talk about your sloppy research.  It's not as if Dorrell has been here 20 years.  It wasn't all that long ago.

The only thing I would take from ASU is the idea of building student housing inside the stadium.  A cool use of space and something we should definately do when we build a stadium at Drake.

On Campus Stadium?
When Drake Stadium was just a hillside, there was a move afoot to make a 65,000 on campus football stadium.  It was put to a vote of the students, circa 1970 or so.  As you can imagine, there were a lot of students in the 70's who felt that football was just more of the military-industrial complex made up of jingoistic imperialist running-dog lackeys, or something like that.  An under-publicized campus referendum ended up with something like For a Football Stadium - 320, Against a football stadium - 350, Hey, Let's Protest the War and Shut Down the School! - 10,000.

That might have been what started our run of mediocrity.  Sure we had some great times with some of Donahue's teams and with Vermeil (and even that streak with Toledo.)  But there was never any passion like you see at some schools where they care about their team.  Some of the passion tends to die down as you sit on the freeway trying to figure out which is the best off-ramp to get to the Rose Bowl.  If we put 65K hard core Bruin rooters in the stands every week, I am confident that the pitch would be a little more feverish.  (And maybe the Athletic Department pin-heads would actually go to a football game and see first hand what Dorrell is doing (or more accurately, not doing.)

If anything can be done to push an on-campus stadium, I vote in favor of pushing it.

I wish...
An on-campus stadium would be great...but there is no way anyone in the three B's (Bel Air, Brentwood, Beverly Hills) would allow it. The noise might be a nuisance to their garden plants.
