Post from another site (link)

a guy named bluebellknoll at bruinzone. It seemed like good information so I cut and pasted it to put here. I'm saying who it was and where I got it from so I think it's okay if I do this. Here it is:

From a reliable BRO poster (dude with tude) who's close to the Athletic Dept. as a scholarship sponsor.

According to people he talked to in the AD, KD is very well liked in the AD
"He knows everyone's name, he remembers birthday's , he's articulate, he's hard working, he's respectful of his superiors, he's respectful of his players and their parents, he is responsible for the kids academic health."

On the other hand, Howland is not well liked in the department.
"He treats people around him like sh*t and if you are not directly benefiting him and the basketball program, you are of little use to him. He is about one thing - the basketball program. He is brash, abrasive and often rude. He is relentless on wanting new facilities. He wins but he is not well liked by people in the AD."

BH has a greater chance of getting canned than KD. Oh, the irony.
BH is a hard-nosed, winner, and KD is just a nice guy.
Looks like KD is our next Terry Donahue (>20 years at UCLA). Oh, the horror.

It's me again, babyblue98. I was still at UCLA when KD and BH were hired. While I never saw KD around campus I did see Howland a few times and this seems pretty much true. Howland just looked like an intimidating guy who takes no bullshit when we crossed paths on campus in the morning. He does not look like the nice guy who praises the other teams we are about to play; he just plain looks intense, like he has a job to do and is on a mission to do it. I didn't even feel comfortable walking by him until about the third time I happened to run by him (I think we must've had the same schedule that quarter or something).

Oh well, I guess the AD is happy having secured their jobs, living in the prolonged fairy tale of college and having everyone around them be nice to them and tell them how great they are like KD does. Howland's too busy caring about winning. I guess he's an outsider as far as they're concerned.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

And the post itself is just total BS.

I don't really care if Howland is a hard a$$ as long as he gets the job done without breaking any rules.

I have met him and his coaching staff before. And they are nothing short of wonderful diplomate for UCLA hoops.

And I don't really care how nice KD is ... he is still an incompetent head coach.

With the way the Morgan Center operates...
and the fact that Howland has to work under substandard conditions, that is to say an unrenovated Pauley, it's no wonder he wouldn't be too friendly with them.  They are an impediment to his team's success.

by isodore on Nov 8, 2006 1:23 PM PST reply actions

Obviously I don't care how nice KD is to everyone
either. That's part of the reason I provided the post. I can't stand KD and think the fact he's nice should not factor into keeping him. I'm sure Howland's an awesome guy. I was saying he seemed like he had an intimidating presence and I like that in a coach. I don't care if that's true or not or if he is nice or not because he cares about winning.

I provided the post because if it's true it seems like good insight into how our AD thinks. So you say the post is not true. Well, then I'm glad I posted it so you were able to relieve my fears of how dumb our AD is. Thank you, for having better inside information than bluebell.

clarification
my comment was not directed towards you at all, it was towards whoever wrote that original post published on Bruin Zone. You are all right with me.

I'm skeptical...
Reading that Howland is somehow harsh to those around him doesn't seem to line up with the interaction that I have had with Ben Howland.

I had the privilege of traveling with the team to the Final Four last year with the band, and on the flight home from Indianapolis, I was approached by Coach Howland as he was walking through plane. I was watching Family Guy on my laptop and he stopped, introduced himself (as if he needed to), shook my hand, and asked my name. We proceeded to talk about Family Guy (apparently the team introduced him to the show and he has been a fan since) and the experience we just had in Indianapolis for a few minutes. He could have easily just passed by me, another random UCLA student and Band member. But instead he started a conversation with me, something I would probably be hesitant to do because of rules against disturbing the players/coaches for the band and spirit squad.

There has never been any indication to me of Coach Howland treating people poorly and frankly, I have serious doubts that he would act like that to the staff at UCLA. This was his dream job, I don't see any reason for him to be a jerk to the people he works with or employ him...ok, facilities might be a reason...

I'm with you AK
(Art?) On the plane ride on the way to Indy, he came back and asked me about one of the songs we play in the band (Carmina Burana) and said that he and the team really like that one and asked us to play it more.  He asked my name and shook my hand.  A terrific ambassador for the University.

EVEN if he was a dick, I don't care.  He's not paid to be a nice guy, he's paid to WIN.

I'm sure to a bunch of losers
someone that cares about winning and has a competitive drive looks really intense and intimidating. When I think about the general incompetence that pervades Morgan Center, I am somewhat amazed that we have 99 National Titles.

Oh no, Ben Howland didn't remember your birthday. BFD. Sack up and look at the results. Coach Howland is intense, but I've heard nothing to indicate what this post claims in his personal life. This borders on a (unsubstantiated) personal attack, and it's disgusting to see the KD lovers try and throw Howland under the bus just to save this disaster of a coach.

by Tydides on Nov 8, 2006 1:55 PM PST reply actions

well said
lets attack the winner to make our loser look good. It sounds a little like the last throws of a final desperate attept to save a football coach (rather than the football program):
  1.  Morgan Center offers up KD's wife as a political pawn to the LAT for an image hit piece during a 4 game losing streak to respond to criticism of his actual record. KD The Thinker?!
  2.  Lackeys are hitting the internet with "rumors" that KD isn't going anywhere (so give up and support the team) and tripe about how bad Howland, a winner, is.
  3.  Former and current players, coaches, Donohue era carpet tramps are coming forward to say what a great player KD was, how great a coach he is, how disciplined he is, how he has turned around this program ... and how fickle and stupid we the fans are.
  4.  Irrational exuberance continues in the face of overwhelmingly negative results: "the team is improving;" "the offense gained 500+ yards (against the #92 ranked defense in the country, #106 against the pass!) so KD taking over the offense is great news."
All signs, in my humble opinion, that they are feeling the pressure in Morgan Center.  I would like to think of it as somewhat positive.
I truly hope for a great season, but if we dont have one we must dumpdorrell.com

Birthday Coordinator
Last I had heard, Dorrell was hired to be a football coach. If it's true that he's super nice, knows everyone's name and remembers their birthdays, well, that's good and all, but I don't remember any of that being part of his job description. If he can't get it done on the football field, maybe he can be the Morgan Center's birthday party planner.

In 40 years, I hope I see a 90-year old Howland sitting next to a 136-year old John Wooden in Pauley Pavilion looking up at a score of banners hanging from the rafters.

Wouldn't you?
If you were given a job that pays more than you've ever earned, to lead one of the best schools in the country, with the kind of talent that almost GUARANTEES you a bowl every year, wouldn't you go around and kiss the butts of every person around you at work? KD is THRILLED to be the coach at UCLA, it is a huge achievement for him. I do think he is sincere, by the way, don't get me wrong. It is pretty obvious that he was hired based on his manners, demeanor and presentation rather than his experience or devotion to winning. WHY IS OUR SCHOOL SO DAMN CHEAP?!!!

Winners versus losers
Assuming what this poster says is true, which I doubt, it would be difficult to more clearly sum up the difference between winners and losers in sports.

I don't want to over-generalize, because there are many exceptions, but its hardly surprising that someone who excels in the highest levels of coaching might be characterized as brash, abrasive or rude -- particularly if your perspective is as a low level person in the Morgan Center.

Beyond the obvious- that personality doesn't matter over winning- it is fairly evident in life that the people who have the drive, determination, passion and skill to acheive great things aren't usually the good natured janitor types.  They kick ass and take names.  They strive for victory and acheive it.  They don't take time to remember that it's Doris' 15th year with the company.

This has got to be the same in a lot of professions.  I know that the some of the heavy hitters at my old law firms were the biggest SOB's in the world.  But, oh my, could some of them practice law.  And, are the owners/CEO's of the companies I know all full of sugar and spice?  Hell no.

Listen, I have every reason to believe that KD is a nice fellow.  That's great, and I'm not being sarcastic- it really is.  It's just not necessarily great, standing alone, for UCLA's football program.

I, for one, want a coach that is going to do everything he can within the rules to put our program on top.  And, frankly, I don't care if the staff thinks he's just super.

by Menelaus on Nov 8, 2006 3:21 PM PST reply actions

No wonder KD is losing and BH just blew out
Cal Poly.  Dorrell is wasting his time  on Birthdays and pleasing parents.  I really resent that Howland would be misunderstood as a prick, while people are sticking up for Dorrell as being quiet, but a thinker, rather than weak and not tough.  I care that Howland is too busy to say hello to everyone and mark it down on his calendar when Scott's birthday in Marketing is because he is focused on winning a championship.

This post pisses me off because I'm sick of the Dorrell spin; win and get tough or get out of there.  I wish people could show their distaste by just not going to the game this Saturday at the RB and selling out the place this Thursday at Pauley.

And if it means anything to anyone, I worked in the Morgan Center for Sports Marketing for a year and the coaches were always focused.  Kathy Olivier never once said hi to me in the year I worked there, I swear to god.

Coach Howland
I enrolled my 11 year old grandson in the UCLA summer basketball camp this year. I met Coach Howland there and, although he is a very busy man (some might mistake this for being rude) he is a very kind and gracious gentleman.

He took the time to pose for a picture with myself and my grandson which is proudly displayed in my office. To say someone is not considerate of others is harsh and I believe that the poster needs more info because Coach is a great guy.

Like they say...
Nice guys finish last and that is about where we are with KD.  I would take an asshole who called me an SOB every day, was totally disconnected and obnoxious, as long as he/she won.  I would tolerate an awful lot for a winner, but would not have much patience for a "nice guy" loser.  KD is a loser, plain and simple.  He is not doing the job he is apparently being UNDERPAID for, therefore he must be removed NOW!

The Raiders just called KD!
They want to hire him as their Director of Birthday Operations.

by Ajax on Nov 8, 2006 8:41 PM PST reply actions

I'm hearing rumors
that KD is stalling on the Raiders Director of Birthday Operations gig in hopes of seeing "greener pastures" as Innappropriate Smiles Coach for the Dallas Cowboys, Dull Emotions Coordinator for the Arizona Cardinal, or the coveted Director of First Name Knowledge position that was recently vacated for the Chicago Bears.

We have to give him another extension
if not we will lose him to those better jobs .. let's face it.

Checklist
He treats his players fairly.
He is honest.
He treats the fans and the game with respect.
He wins games.
He embraces our extensive and illustrious legacy.

He may or may not rub people in Morgan Center the wrong way. With the way they've botched the KD situation thus far, I'd say we need someone to shake things up down there. Howland is probably weeding out the losers, so good for him, and good for us.

We Don't Tolerate That Weak Shit Here
That post from that other site -- the stuff about how BH is not liked in Morgan -- is the type of weak shit that you don't find here. And, I'm glad we don't. It's what we who have been warped by the law would call multi-level hearsay. In essence, if fails to impress because no one is personally responsible for it -- we can't tell if it is real, and if it is real how credible the source is. "I heard if from a connected friend, who knows someone inside, who speaks to the AD at the urinal ... ", sorry it doesn't work for me. Ben Howland is a focused man with his eyes on the prize -- a prize he achieves. In achieving it, he earns the respect and affection of his players and this community. To say he is a rude, self-centered man, who is not respected in the athletic department -- and to attribute that statement to well connected people who are nameless -- is BULL SHIT. Take a look at all of the empirical evidence surrounding Ben Howland. Look at what he says and does. The way he relates to his team, his school, its students and the bigger community. The latest example: Read what Kevin Love said when he signed to come to UCLA. Howland is a stand up guy who is honest and respected. Even when he was not winning, he was respected -- as a coach and an individual. I cannot tell you how proud I am to have Ben Howland represent me and my alma mater. I will not believe that the people in the Morgan Center don't share those views until one of them, publically, calls Howland out. I will not accept the truth of multi-level gossip. I have great respect for all who make up this community. And, I beleive in the complete and free flow of opinions. However, it bothers me, personally, to have people accept the premise that Howland is not a "nice" man -- but say that's ok because he wins. The truth is he is both a nice man and a winner. Ben Howland is. Karl Dorrell is not. We deserve a man who can both be nice and win. We have one in basketball and we deserve one in football. sjh PS. During this season,on this site, we have seen a plethora of posts rooted in data not rumors. I am consistently blown away by the depth and quality of analysis. Our posters do their homework. It's what makes this Bruin Nation special -- people using their talent to make well reasoned presentations. That shit about Howland belongs in the National Enquirer not in a true sports blog. I think it important that it be posted here so that we can see what others in our world are saying, but it makes clear to me the difference between this site and the others. We don't tolerate that weak shit here.

Thanks 66
Really appreciate this post.

I think if you want to expand on it and post it on a diary, that would be great.

You perfectly captured what we are all about here on BN, and why we love Coach Howland so much.

Thank you.

Nice guys are compensating
Why is it that the weakest link of any business group/practice happens to be the nicest guy/gal? It's a survival mechanism. Compensation for the weaknesses and failures, whether perceived or real. KD does what he needs to do to keep his job. When he's not winning ballgames and getting his ass kicked by 'SC, that survival mechanism kicks into full gear. Just like any business or profession.

Warm and fuzzy...
This ain't croquet. Gimme Bear Bryant or Vince Lombardi or Woody Hayes or Bobby Knight or Billy Martin or Leo Durocher or Mike Ditka or Bill Parcells (pre-T.O.) or my Dad. No bullshit, ever!
I want my son lead, trained , disciplined, worked hard and successful. His Auntie will be nice to him.
That's why I applaud the hire of Walker. I know some guys are struggling with the way the defense looks right now but that has more to do with past recruiting than with Walker's coaching. He's a tough, fundamentally driven coach who will make sure the boy  aligns correctly, tackles and pursues. More of that, less bullshit.
Where's the milk and cookies?
