New Blog: Backing the Pack for NC State Fans!

The Single Most Important Thing, Like Ever

You're probably here just to get your daily Bruin fix.  So pardon my interruption from our regularly scheduled programming to mention something else.

You see, every once in a while, an issue comes up that truly transcends sports, and demands our attention.  In these moments, everyone, be they enemies, rivals or just fierce competitors, should lay down their animosity and stand together as one.  Yes, so consequential is this, that, if for only a moment, Bruins and Trojans, Buckeyes and Wolverines, and Bears and Trees, must set aside their differences, recognizing that we have but this one moment to avail ourselves of an opportunity that could fundamentally change the very nature of our existence.

Just like this, it will change the world forever.

As you are no doubt already aware, the 2006 College Football Blogger Awards are upon us.  Thankfully, the good folks from Rocky Top Talk have given us bloggers an opportunity to revel in, uh, ourselves.  And, MGoBlog's Brian has made that process even easier with a handy nominations entry thingy.  Check it out and nominate yourselves silly.

Of course, I for one, can't think of a contest that could possibly top band member Johnny Trudeo's thrilling come-from-behind-victory to capture the Treasurer spot over that vapid Tracy Andrews in my junior year high school election.  And awards presentations have always left me a bit cold, particularly after a deserving Dave Germane got robbed of his Most Improved Player award in water polo in 1990.  But, I'm sure I'm the exception, and you all recognize the magnitude of what is happening here.

More seriously, don't let my bitterness at the shameful exclusion of a category for "Most Vitriolic, Venomous and Hateful Blog" take away from a chance to recognize some truly great content being generated in the wider college sports blogosphere.

We here mostly focus on the Bruins, and take pride in this being a fan blog which has evolved into a wonderful UCLA community. But, if you've got the time, you should check out some of the other fantastic blogs out there, include (among others) Mgoblog, Burnt Orange Nation, EDSBS, Dawg Sports (and, no, I'm not just mentioning Kyle because he nominated us for "The You Talkin' To Me Award"), RollBamaRoll, Blue-Gray Sky, and The Wizard of Odds.  Also, if you haven't already, check out the carefully selected list of blogs on our Blogroll, who also do great work.

Okay, enough of that, back to UCLA....

GO BRUINS.

erm
After glancing at the rules, it seems like we're not supposed to vote for bruinsnation stuff?
You cannot nominate yourself or any of your own posts for any of the awards, except for the I Wanna Talk About Me Free for All, where you MUST select your own posts.

So is the point of this for us to post here who we think should win what award, asside from ourselves?

Yeap ...
I wouldn't want any of you to nominate BN for anything. I think this is just an opportunity for folks to learn about some of the other blogs that are covering their teams passionately, thoughtfully, giving us a view of college sports (which we love) beyond the boring filter of traditional media.

And if you all have ideas on who else are doing great work submit your nominations.

And I think once the nominees are selected you can vote for whoever you want. That's how I read it.

Oops, somebody snuck ahead of me
The "Yeah, that's about right" comment should be attached to the one immediately above this one.

The MZone
Thanks to Nestor, I took a look at the MZone, and the guys who write that stuff are really funny.  Basically all their stuff is nominatable (if that's a word.)

But my favorite, and something that should be good for some kind of award, is their string they did on Auburn, and whether their nickname was War Eagles or Tigers.  They had a couple of pictures about a bird with a tiger head and vice versa.

Their stuff was funny enough, but then the whole thing took on a life of its own, when Auburn fans and Alabama fans started going at each other.  The concept that Auburn and Alabama fans would tear at each other's eyeballs is not news, but that they would do so (for months now) on a Michigan blog I think is news.

(And some of the comments by the contributors are priceless.  Some Auburn fan from Georgia said that all the pretty girls from Georgia go to Auburn, not Alabama.  That was stopped by an Alabama fan pointing out that those aren't girls, or something like that.)

Yup...
...Alabama fans and Auburn fans will smack talk anywhere.

I got into an argument in Nashville in May with some Auburn fans at a soccer game (USA vs. Morocco.) Our rivalry knows no bounds whether geographic or sporting.

I also remember Alabama and Auburn fans trading chants of "Roll Tide" and "War Eagle" at the USA vs. Argentina soccer game in Birmingham during the '96 Olympics.

:D

That's why I'm not getting involved in that
When I move.  One rivalry is enough for me.  I have to stay neutral because my sorority has chapters at both universities.

Oh yeah...
...I forgot you're moving soon. Hope all is going well with that endeavor.

Yeah, it will pick up speed after the New Year
I did meet with someone at the VA the last time I was in Birmingham.  Thanks again.

by bruinbabe2000 on Dec 13, 2006 9:33 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah, that's about right
And the prohibition against nominating yourself was really intended just for the bloggers, as it would appear . . . weird.  Except for the I Wanna Talk About Me category, for which all bloggers are required to be non-humble.

Readers, I think, can nominate whomever they want.  No way to track it anyway, I don't think.  So have at it!
