Questions I Would Ask the Coaches at S.E.C. Media Days Bar-right-arrows

We Have A New Chancellor

We have a new chancellor and thank God he is not coming from the Ivies. LA Times has the scoop.:

University of Virginia Provost Gene D. Block will become the next chancellor of UCLA, if his appointment is approved by the University of California's Board of Regents in a special meeting Thursday, according to sources close to the search.

UC President Robert C. Dynes is expected to ask the regents to appoint Block, 58, a biologist, to fill the position left vacant by the departure last summer of Albert Carnesale, the sources said. Block has held the No. 2 post at the University of Virginia since 2001.

UCLA law professor Norman Abrams has served as acting chancellor of the campus since Carnesale stepped down and, assuming the new leader is approved, is expected to remain in the job until Block's arrival in July, the sources said. They spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the search process.

Block is described by those who know him as quiet and low-key, though approachable and popular with faculty and students alike. His expertise in science has not precluded him from fostering strong ties to faculty in areas such as the humanities and social sciences, and several colleagues also emphasized Block's role at the University of Virginia in helping to increase racial and gender diversity among the faculty.

"He's not afraid of complicated, difficult issues," said Gertrude Fraser, who has worked closely with Block as the university's vice provost for faculty advancement. "He's dealt with them."

That ability could serve Block in good stead as he arrives at a campus whose leadership is dealing with a number of complex, high-profile issues, including efforts to increase student diversity, a particular concern being the low number of African Americans on campus, and cost overruns at the university's long-delayed new medical centers.

I know there are some readers here who went to UVa. I'd really like to hear your takes on him. I have been to Charlottesville a few times over the years to hang out with friends who went to UVa Law school. The impression I have of UVa is that it is a great academic institution, which has wonderful athletics facilities, decent programs, and that does a good job of making sure tradition is a rich part of the experience of going to UVa. But, that's just my impression as an outside observer. As I mentioned, we'd love to get some takes on Block from Bruins who also have close ties to UVa community via grad school or whatever.

I am relieved though that our next chancellor will not be some gasbag from the Ivy League.

GO BRUINS.

New Chancellor
When I read this in the LAT, my first and continuing impression is that UVA and UCLA are so different (relatively rural vs. big city, west coast thinking and behaviors, relatively supportive media vs. lots of media attention  , relatively isolated vs. Hollywood all around relatively cheap living vs. $$$$) that he will be stunned (welcome to the show). But, then what do I know about these big time academics who are internationally traveled and wined and dined everywhere? Let's hope he is pragmatic, interested in seeing the "big picture" as to athletic programs, and sensible. Is that asking too much from an academic administrator?

Didn't go to UVa
but I follow ACC actions closely since I live out East. Under the current admin. UVa built a brand new basketball gym, and did some serious upgrades to their football stadium. UVa is one of the best but they are also very pragmatic/understanding when it comes to intgrating athletics and understanding its importance in the fabric of university life.

I am cautiously optimistic.

UVa law student here
My brain is still reeling from just completed final exam ,but some initial thoughts on this development.

We at the law school tend to be isolated from much of the goings on with the main university, but from what I currently know about the guy, he seems to be a solid choice. From UVa's point of view, he is the second senior faculty member to leave the university this semester for a campus/university presidency, so certainly a loss.

N raised the issue of athletic facilities. This is an area where UVa excels at, and has completed several projects in recent years, from the expansion of Scott Stadium (UVa football), improvement of the Soccer/Lacrose facility, Baseball stadium, and construction of an indoor Tennis facility. The culmination of this work being the opening this summer of the John Paul Jones Arena, simply the finest college owned athletic facility I have yet seen (16,000 seat, $130 million, completely privately financed - a likely condition of any Pauley renovation).

I'll try to post more about Gene Block later tonight or tomorrow; honestly I am not much good for anything right now.

LOL
take your time hoo. It's time for you to go out ... and uh CELBRATE.

I know after I took my last finals after law school semester, I was no where close to the internets, while celebrating with Jack, Daniel, Mr. Bass, Mr. Adams, and rest of their pals!

Finals
After my last final, a friend and I had a few Dr. Pepper shots.  That drink will always have a special place in my heart.

"raised the issue"
haha. After 4 hours of issue spotting, I guess it is hard to break the habit. Anyway, here is a link to Gene Block's UVa bio.

Did you catch the murder issue?
That was always being muttered after leaving the bar exam.  But boy, do you ever have it easy.  Why back in my day ....

Actually, I don't remember celebrating much after exams.  I just remember having to go to work to keep the bills paid.  (My first law job was researching at the magnificent rate of $2.00 per hour (the minimum wage was $1.25 then.  My second law job was $500 per month, working 40+ hours per week.)  Even then it didn't seem like much.
