Huge props to Dorrell, Walker and the rest of the staff for having our boys ready to go to war today.

Great picture
I got to know what that felt like twice as a student--my first two years.  My junior year I had my wisdom teeth pulled on Friday and on Saturday our losing streak began.

Any students reading this, enjoy it.  You've deserved it, especially the seniors (4th years and I know there are some 5th years out there!).  Everyone should know what this feels like when you're in school!

I know the feeling...
I had dinner at Lamonica's last night.  My best meal there was in 1997, me and my friend eating with our USC friend, and she sat as the Victory Bell was driven around on the back of a truck and rang out in the streets of Westwood.  I feel a bit now like I did back then.

Refresh my memory
Didn't Pete Carrol tell Walker not to take the DC job with the Bruins?  I didn't realize it was because he was afraid of the Bruins defense under Walker.  Maybe more people would be a lot better off if they stopped listening to Pete Carrol.

Thanks UCLA
On behalf of all Michigan fans all over the world, thank you for beating that smug jackass. I was rooting so much for you guys, not just for BCS Championship game reasons, but because I really wanted you guys to get a win over U$C. Excuse me, but who hired D Walker?

by CENTAUR on Dec 2, 2006 6:30 PM PST up reply actions

This is a GREAT win
But, it would be a mistake to conclude from the result either of the following:
  1.  KD is the coach UCLA deserves; or
  2.  PC is the QB for UCLA's future.
This is an incredible win.  As someone who started at UCLA in '91, and almost couldn't fathom an UCLA loss for a while, I understand the euphoria, but come'on now.

by Menelaus on Dec 2, 2006 5:41 PM PST up reply actions

Agreed. Completely. Let's focus only on the big W
To all posters, let's SAVOR this and postpone any judgments about the long-term direction of the program to another day. Congrats to the team and the coaches for a JOB WELL DONE today!!!

We celebrate tonight
We'll debate the future later.  I'll keep my opinion to myself.

by bruinbabe2000 on Dec 2, 2006 5:42 PM PST up reply actions

Absolutely
He finally won a big game.  It was the most important game on our schedule.  And I couldn't be happier about it.

This doesn't make up for the fact that UCLA has a mediocre football program under Karl Dorrell.  This doesn't make up for the embarrassing losses over the past few years.

If it were up to me, I would fire everyone on this staff after this season aside from Dewayne Walker.  His defense won that game for UCLA.

But don't worry.  Your man Dorrell will still be here for at least another year.  I'm sure this win saved his job for at least another season.

by Bruin Roar on Dec 2, 2006 5:49 PM PST up reply actions

not the time for this discussion
though (like it or not) I do think this win will have given him another year, especially if combined with a win v. FSU.

by bruinhoo on Dec 2, 2006 5:53 PM PST up reply actions

Well
At the beginning of the year the general consensus was that KD needs to win 8-9 games AND beat USC to keep his job. If UCLA beats FSU then they will have met those requirements. So I think that answers the question.

by njbruin on Dec 2, 2006 6:06 PM PST up reply actions

and calling people (idiots) on a day like today is just off.

You don't know how pissed I am that I didn't make it through all four years without beating Southern Cal.  Mr. BB graduated the year before me, so he did.  My cousin did, and Mr. BB's sister did.

I'm also the only UCLA alum in my family who did not have the basketball team win a championship while I was a student.  They won all four years my uncle was there, and my cousin's freshman year.

We won, and I kept saying to Mr. BB, "Pinch me.  Tell me I'm not dreaming."  I swore I felt the pinch, and needless to say, I was pissed when I woke up.

Fast forward to today.  I told Mr. BB the same thing.  This time, I know I'm not dreaming.  We shocked the world, my fellow Bruins.

Pete Arbogast said $C would win that games 9 tiems out of 10...

Callers are whining about not giving us credit...

AND the psotgame hsots are saying that we just punched the Trojans in the mouth, punched them again, hit them with combinations, and TOOK the game.

BEAUTIFUL!!!

THANK YOU BRUINS, from Coach Dorrell all the way down to the equipment guys and all the beautiful linemen and linebackers and defensvie backs and runnign abcks, and quarterbacks and receivers and kickers and gunners and trainers and all the way back up to the top with DeWayne Walker and everybody wearing even a shred of blue today!

The game by the numbers
One must give Koach Karl credit for a good game plan which was well executed. When you look at the stats, the game was all about defense, and it's interesting that when it came down to it, SC fell on the same sword that has damaged UCLA most of this season-ineffective offense. Both teams played stellar defense with the Bruins having the edge in decisive situations.

I have pasted the game stats from espn.com below. Notice that SC actually had about 100 more total yards over UCLA. If you recall, SC actually had better field position over the course of the game but they kept shooting themselves in the foot with stupid penalties which destroyed scoring opportunities.

Today's game shows where both teams need to improve. For the most part, UCLA still lacks a running game (only 55 yds.), and SC lacks the explosiveness that it had last year. (Booty was never able to deliver the breakaway pass, nor their runners the game breaking run.)  If I had to bet, I would think that Carroll might take a second look at Sanchez. It's interesting that I can't think a single special team play that made much of any difference in the game.

I must confess that as the game rounded the last few minutes, I was nervous that Dorrell was crawling back into the same cacoon that killed us against ND, but I guess the gods were with us this time.

All-in-all, despite the lack of razzle dazzle, it was one of the most engrossing games UCLA-SC games that I have witnessed. Maybe there is hope for Koach Karl--it was nice to see him really get into the game and to take an active part (tactically and emotionally) in the game.

It seemed unlikely that Guererro would dump Dorrell before this game. Now, it seems totally out the picture. Out of the fire of this season, Dorrell has grown, and maybe, we have actually found ourselves a coach.

          SC  UCLA
1st Downs 14 15
Total Yards 329 235
Passing 274 114
Rushing 55 121
Penalties 9-55 3-21
3rd Down Conversions 6-17 4-13
4th Down Conversions 1-3 0-0
Turnovers 1 1
Possession 31:47 28:13

Special Teams Refresher
SC downed a punt inside the 1 that lead to a safety.

Graves had a 24 yd punt return that started the drive that finished w/ the go-ahead field goal.

Perez boomed two 60+ yd punts including the back breaker at the end of the game.

Uhh...
"For the most part, UCLA still lacks a running game (only 55 yds.)"

You're looking at the wrong team there. UCLA had 121 yards rushing. COWAN alone had 55.
