We Have That Lavin Feeling

Oh that Lavin feeling ...

Looking disorganized on defense after talking big leading up to a big game.

Costing the team with dumb penalties, stupid bone head mistakes.

Playing with that classic Dorrellian lack of killer instinct:

AP Photo

Playing without any sense of urgency and playing not to lose.

Once again a poorly coached Dorrell team snatches defeat from the jaws of victory (by getting slapped in the fourth quarter and giving up 44 points to one of the worst offensive units in the nation).

We have seen the same movie over and over and over again for last four years except for a little aberration on December 2nd.

How long are we going to keep singing same tired song?

GO BRUINS.

The real reasons why we lost to FU State
Just returning from AT&T Park, here are my top 3 reasons we lost:

#1:  Special teams play was horrible, including 1 blocked punt returned for a TD, touching a ball going out of bounds to trap us on the 3-yard line, and long punt returns all day by FU Sate (FSU).

#2:  Key errors including the illegal motion on 4th down and the slip on FSU's 4th and long, giving up a TD.

#3:  Poor coaching in terms of poise, game-play sharpness, and play-calling.

This was not Cowan's fault, though he did have a poor second half.

by PeterUCLA on Dec 27, 2006 10:47 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Sorry to disagree
but Pat Cowan fucking stinks!

I geuss you can blame him for playing him and I'm coll with that but, Pat Cowan Fucking Stinks!

He should have never been under center for UCLA!!!!!!

by uclabruins05 on Dec 27, 2006 8:51 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Well
I did agree with the decision to start him but I also thought he should have been brought if he was not getting it done.

Despite some nice throws here and there he wasn't getting it done. And KD didn't have the gonads to bring SPJ in.

KD once again .. was playing not to lose.

And it cost him.

Check that ... it cost UCLA.

Cowan had a horrible 2nd half
But that comes from going away from what worked in the 1st half. Typical Dorrell-NO halftime adjustments, getting outcoached, making an average player a star-Booker, Wash QB. Just pathetic. How do we rid ourselves of the new Roach Coach. UCLA football is a JC under Dorrell-CCLA city college LA

Another 1/2 a game
Wow, anyone else get that UW-game feeling? PLay 1/2 of a nice game, make ZERO halftime adjustments, and get utterly crushed in the second half against a truly sub-part team.

Gosh I sure hope we extend Karl's contract for putting together such an outstanding game.

Hope you were watching, Dan.

The D
It sucked today.  Can't put it all on the coaches (though they were thoroughly uninspiring).  They played with no heart.  Where was the pass rush the entire 2nd half?

by chaphill1 on Dec 27, 2006 8:55 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Played with no heart
they came out uninspired, unfocused and frankly not into the game.

Whose fault is that?

And we get this crap after Taylor's comments from yesterday?

So Christian is December 2 meaningless?

What a f*cking joke.

I was very happy to beat USC
but I truly never understood why everyone was going so crazy.  We knocked our rivals out of the championship game which is very sweet.  But one game is just one game.  We were so excited that it just made us look like such an inferior piece of crap program that has never done anything before.  Dorrell got a pass from a ton of people after that game because he beat our hated rivals.  Well the goal is to not just beat USC, but to make it to bowl games that truly mean something.  We are going to be stuck in mediocrity forever with this kind of attitude.  We should not be in a position where we expect USC to dominate us and then go crazy when we somehow win.

UCLA deserves better.

Disappointing
to end the season this way.

Cowan wasn't the reason we lost this game. BIG, BIG special teams blunders swung a close game into FSU's favor, and Cowan is just not good enough to single handedly bring us back we are down 10 with 6 minutes and change. Not going to happen.

FSU's game plan offensively was to shot gun and give Weatherford more time to dink and dunk to his big, athletic receivers, who were matched up against our smaller DBs. This worked.

We went away from the run in the 2nd half.....our O-Line had control the whole game.

Don't think I can fault KD with starting PC. I do fault our lack of discipline, going away from the run in the 2nd half, and just not having the bodies to match up against their WRs (recruiting).

We are not a great football team.

It's over.
Karl Dorrell has had his chance to prove himself.  He has repeatedly failed.  We thought that maybe the team had "turned a corner", but it was all a lie.  This is the same UCLA team we have been seeing all year.  The Bruins make stupid mistakes and they lose to teams they shouldn't be losing to.

One win against our rival does not make a season and it certainly doesn't make a coaching career.  We are now 1-3 in meaningless bowl games with this coach.  If Dan Guerrero actually cares about this program, then he must fire Karl Dorrell.

If Dorrell is the coach starting next year, you're saying loud and clear that you're fine with UCLA being a joke football school.

Aren't you tired of seeing UCLA being terrible?  Maybe you're sick of the Bruins getting killed again and again on national TV?  Take a look at what Dorrell has done in the last 4 years.  It's terrible.  We need someone who coaches to win.

FSU
basically outlasted our defensive line and secondary.  They looked just as strong if not stronger at the end of the game and we petered out.  Pat had those interceptions, but they weren't the reason for the loss.  They came after the turnovers, td pass to Carr and the run by Booker.

But still, that second half looked bad offensively.  What a shitty feeling when Cowan threw that left-handed pass and the announcer was comparing him to Staubach and then he throws that interception.  Pat needs to finish that game just as strong as he started it.

I'm pretty disappointed.  This was a chance to show we can play football against the ACC, east coast and we blew it.  I have to admit, but it does seem like the same old story after that game.

by greatgymnasticsschool on Dec 27, 2006 9:17 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

defense actually played well
the final score may not indicate it but look at how the TD's were scored by FSU- one td was a def td, another was a terrible offensive pass interference noncall which put fsu up 30-27, a blocked punt return for td, and a couple of others were due to turnovers/penalties/boneheaded plays made by the special teams/offense that put the defense in bad field position. thats at least 28 pts which the defense was not responsible for so they played status quo.

KD has taken this program 4 steps backwards. he was outcoached by not making any 2nd half adjustments. Lets give Mike Shula a chance to coach here on the west coast.

face it, we're a basketball school whether you like the label or not. we will always be for a long time. let the chants rain in as i heard them my first year coming into ucla- except replace toledo with dorrell. o yeah, that other chant, "We Want Olson", no need to change that one.

bruin bashing fellow bruins
glad to see that we have fellow bruins bashing on other bruins. you really set the example on that one. nice language by the way.

as for disagreeing with being labeled a 'basketball school', its kind of hard to get that label off when:

  1. You have won the most natl championships in the sport
  2. Currently the bball team is going up and the football team going ???? Both Lavin and Toldeo were fired the same year so Dorrell has had as much time to build up the program Howland has.
  3. We're the #1 ranked team in the nation in bball.
I guess you discredited and/or failed to see that i pointed out that the defense played decently. so the 'knows nothing about football' was a great statement.

As for the Mike Shula statement, that was a little out there in left field but you got any other valid suggestions who can take over KD if he's fired. Just trying to provide a solution to the problem. May not have been the best one but its nonetheless.

We keep pointing out problems but yet provide no solution.

by gobruinbasketball on Dec 27, 2006 9:34 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Actually
from your post it does appear you seem to know nothing but football. We gave up 44 points to a team which failed to score a single point at home against Wake Forest. Yes Wake Forest.

Yes D had something to do with not being able to tackle, specially Booker.

Yeah an uninspored D had something to do with being tired and worn down in the second half.

And if you want to make your asinine argument about is being just a basketball based on what has happened in last 3-4 years, then you truly are clueless and seem to have no grasp of the history over our football program.

Take your weak shit somewhere else.

Later.

Oh in terms of proving no solution
I think you can look back and read up on how we view the UCLA football program should be, what should amount to discerinible progress.

Just look back and read the posts on coaching candidates and you will see the number of coaches from all over the country we have discussed in detail.

With your new account you are clearly here to troll and quiet possibly not a Bruin fan.

And if anything you are an idiotic Bruin fan. And there are lots of places around the internets for idiots to share their uninformed takes. Not here on BN. Later.

For the quotes from Dullard in the paper tomorrow... Something along the lines of:

"I thought we played a solid game."

"Overall, I'm pleased with the overall progress we made this year."

"You know, you can't be unhappy with a 7-6 season."

"Hey, remember when I beat 'SC ealier this month? Yea, that was awesome."

Did anyone see a post-game press conference? They're usually good for a laugh.

All I care about...
is that we BEAT SC.  I was at that game.  The team was so inspired.  It was the best game that I have ever gone to.  The atmosphere, the feeling, everything about it was special to me.  It was a feeling like none other beating them for the first time in seven years.  I was at the '99 game where our 8 game streak was broken.  I was at the '05 game where we got embarrassed.  Not the best two SC-UCLA games to attend during the new millennium obviously.  But coming back the next year and spoiling their championship hopes, it was sweet.  It's a game I'll remember for as long as I live.  That made my season.

Only good memory of 2006
will be that 'SC win. To embrace that moment is fine. It should not, however, be "all we care about". We should care about Pac-10 championships, bowl victories, BCS berths, and national titles. We should care about being a national power year after year, supremacy in recruiting, and not ignore mediocrity when it stares at us in the face.

just back from the Emerald Bowl
What a lackluster showing.  Couldn't wait to read the posts on BN.  It was awesome to hear complete strangers sitting next to us gasp when we completed the 78 yarder.  Everyone asked where that had been all season.  By the middle of the 3rd qtr it was obvious that A.Robert Chai can't hold a block, B.  We were outschemed and out adjusted , and C. We were gonna lose this one too.  Bruins outnumbered FSU fans at least 4 to 1.  The crowd was totally behind the team and the players were calling out to the fans to get louder.  We had a band while they had piped in music. This was another home game, and we lost it.  Bleccchhh.  I still have my Dump Dorrell shirt, time to break it out again....

We beat SC?
I know we beat SC, but watching this FSU game, I wonder how we didn't give up 60 to USC.

One thing that has been bothering me all night is watching that great return at the end of the first half go to waste!  "Hey guys, wasn't that a great return? lets watch the clock run out and take it to the locker room where we don't have to strategize or make adjustments."

On another note...UCLA is not a basketball school.  Yes, we are good at basketball, but we have 88 National Championships in OTHER sports.  We shouldn't settle for mediocrity in football, that is what Duke, North Carolina, Kansas, and Kentucky do.  We're UCLA, why shouldn't the football coach be under the same scrutiny as basketball, water polo, golf, track and field, volleyball, soccer, softball.  We didn't get to 99 national championships by settling for 7-6, or even 3-1 under Dorrell's "new season."

Fire Dorrell, give us a program to be proud of.

I don't think this game is clearly a coaching loss. I mean, the player errors were too obvious and too game-changing. But still, you can't help thinking about Fresno State and Wyoming when stuff like this happens. Give Dorrell all the credit you can reasonably give him, and his overall record is still inadequate. But when is this going to become obvious to the people who can make the change we all want. And deserve, dammit!

Dude, you're really starting to chap my hide. If Nestor doesn't put a stop to your ridiculous comments, I will. You are a loser. Why do you even write here? There is no purpose in your writing other than to spew negative comments that are completely baseless. If you are frustrated, you should be. If you have nothing positive or helpful to say, then shut the hell up and go sit on a pole.

It is bad enough that we have to put up with a mediocre football team, we shouldn't have to read your insulting garbage. You denigrate our school every chance you get and I am sick of it. You have not given one useful suggestion in the two months that I have been on this blog. Just a typical passive aggressive whiner. Useless.

Sorry if it bothers you but it's the truth.  And it's been true for a long time.  As far as suggestions, everyone has offered the same 3 forever now.  We're past that.  At least we all should be.

Now is the time to shut-up the Dorrell losers who think next year is going to be any different by pointing out the reality.  The hard reality.  I don't give a shit anymore about the minutiae of if people think the Special Teams were the problem (and by the way, we started most drives on like the 50, so make sure you factor that in).  Or if it bothers you for that matter.

Baseless
1. We do not lose to EVERYONE. That is a stupid, childish comment.

2. In the correct world order, UCLA finishes in the top 25 every year and competes for the Pac-10. KD has upset that world order. Your view of the world order is tarnished by your incessant negativity.

3. There are no "Dorrell losers" here. If you want to address them, go on the other blogs where they lick his behind.

4. We know the hard reality. We are not saying that the team will be successful next year. We are saying that it should be and it is the standard to which KD will be held accountable.

Okay...
  1.  By everyone, I meant every big game (ie: not Rice) Obviously we don't lose every single game.
  2.  Your definition of "correct world order" is a little rosy... but you are right.  And I want UCLA to compete for CHAMPIONSHIPS, which we never do.  (please don't reply with 1955, thx)
And you are correct, my view of the UCLA football world is incessantly negative, it's been born of 25+ years of being a fan, alum, and being mostly disappointed... I'm working on it.
  1.  Yes, there few "Dorrell losers" here, but the people here are (rightfully) very supportive of UCLA football, often to the point of having unrealistic expectations and disappointments given the situation over the last many years.
  2.  I'm reading a lot of people who say next year will be 10 wins...  (many who say it had better be).  I don't see many who say it will be 6 or 7...
And my disappointment anger is never to the university, it's only to Football.

glad to hear it
Well, I don't think it is realistic to expect UCLA to compete for national championships every year. But definitely Pac-10 championship. Nestor also had a great post showing the schools with the most Top 25 weekly appearances and UCLA was in the top 20, so I don't think my view of the world order is too rosy.

Are you merely trying to lower everyone's expectations so that we can avoid disappointment? Are you saying that we should expect 7 win seasons and be satisfied when they happen? In that case, what are we complaining about anyway? I just don't understand the point you are trying to make.

What the f happened with Walker's vaunted D?
Is Walker's skin made of teflon? How is it that when UCLA holds USC to 9 points, it's b/c of Walker, but when UCLA's D gives up 44, it's b/c of Dorrell?

I think Dorrell sucks sometimes, but today I thought the blame really falls on Walker.  Giving up 44 to the worst OC in college football (Jeff Bowden) is pathetic.

by composite on Dec 27, 2006 10:38 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

It was 27 actually
but you are correct. The D didn't have the same fire and tenacity it showed in the 'SC game. Their 3rd down conversion rate was phenominal (and we had been tops in the country in that category). Their big WRs just ate up our secondary. Booker was a stud. Weatherford (who was awful in the 1st half but pretty decent in the 2nd) was given too much time.

When it is left up to our offense to win games, well, we all pretty much know how that will turn out.

Back to where we started
How in the world did Dorrell find three more corners to turn after turning the one on December 2nd?

For the delusional "fans" out there
Here's AP's wrapup:

Brandon Breazell caught a 78-yard TD pass and Junior Taylor had a scoring catch in the first half for the Bruins, who finished another mediocre regular season playing some of their best football in coach Karl Dorrell's four seasons. It didn't translate into bowl success when the tension mounted.

Straight from the horse's mouth: ANOTHER MEDIOCRE SEASON.  STFU you f'ing homers. KD f'ing sucks.  Stop defending MEDIOCRITY.  I'm so f'ing sick of you. Go pollute BRO or wherever you go to jack off.

3-0
Oh yeah, I just remembered, when KD was spouting that stupid "3-0" shit, even at the Cal State Fullerton BB game, I KNEW that we were going to f'ing lose.  Way to go, setting your sights so damn low KD.  Ever try "13-0"?  Sorry, I forgot you can't count that high.

The Warning Signs...
I was at a high school basketball game tonight, so I taped the game.

As soon as we got that illegal shift penalty on 4th and 1 that cost us the first down, I thought to myself, "I've seen this movie before"...and I started fast-forwarding between plays to get it over with...

Sure enough...

UGH.

Let's face it.  KD isn't going anywhere...at least for another year.  The USC victory bought him a year...minimum.  Is that how it SHOULD be?  Probably not.

I loved a couple of great points I saw above...sorry I am too tired to respond to each accordingly.

"Composite" you are dead on...Walker's defense looked like dog crap tonight.  We gave a terrible quarterback all day to throw and we didn't tackle at all.  Given 25 days to scheme, this "genius" couldn't come up with a game plan to shut down a horrible FSU offense?

And Dorrell, you had an opportunity to jam the football right up FSU's ass in the 2nd quarter, but you chose to kick a field goal on 4th down from the 2.  For cryin' out loud...IT'S A BOWL GAME!  Try to win the darn thing...

In comparison, Bowden goes for it on 4th and 9 in the 4th quarter when a FG was probably the more prudent move.  Because Bobby Bowden plays to win...and it paid off.

And who is our $%#@ing special teams coach?  With the exception of Medlock's usual excellence, that may have been the worst special teams performance in football history.  Losing yards on punt returns?  A blocked punt?  AND TOUCHING A KICKOFF THAT WAS ABOUT TO GO OUT OF BOUNDS ON THE 3 YARD LINE!?!?!?!?  Shit...let's go hire some high school's JV coach to coach special teams because whoever is doing it for us sucks.

I didn't even mention the almost blocked extra point...

OK, rant over.  I am putting football to bed for 8 months.  It's Ben Ball time!

Karl Dorrell's Coaching Tenure in a Nutshell
I'm new this is my first comment
This game was basicly a summary of what Dorrell's entire career has been like.
-Losing to an iferior team
-Coming in with a lack of preparation
-Giving his fans false hope but falling apart in the second half
-stupid mental errors
-playing extremely conservative
-not putting in the correct players (Ben Olson)
and as usual he showed absolutely no emotion on the sidelines. I was at this game and i have to say it may have been the bigget waste of 50 bucks i've ever spent.

Totally
being sarcastic.  Can't wait to get rid of Dorrell.  I was really pulling for him to win big and hopefully redeem himself next season, but I've had enough.  We all have.
Go Bruins!!!

By the way how shitty were those fake-ass rapper/singer FSU fans, i wasn't booing them just because they were FSU fans, they just really sucked, it was like like driving swords slowly into my ears i have never wanted to shoot myself more than at that hell of long "performance"

I've never left a Bruins game early ...
... before today. But with about four or five minutes to go, I had to get out of there. I was just disgusted, probably more at myself for laying out all that cash to bring seven kids to the game.

After the SuC game, I said KD should wait a week or two and then announce his resignation. Rather than re-reaffirming that he's in over his head, he would always be remembered as the guy who dominated the Trojans. But, nooooooooooooo! He couldn't man-up because he had to try to prove his doubters wrong.

Well, Dec. 2 is a day that will no longer live in infamy. In fact, I doubt anyone will remember it the day after the next UCLA-SuC game. And after 20+ years as a season ticket-holder, I believe I've reached my limit. Either KD goes or I go, and I already have one foot out the door.
