Around SBN: Are The Orioles Bad Or Unlucky With Their Young Pitching?

Mojo in Oakland-UCLA Sneaks into the Elite 8

I'm not even going to bring up the comparisons to the 1995 team. They are too obvious.

I just want to enjoy and savor this.  Bottom line, we are 3 games away from making history. And with these kids and this coach (and staff) we have a real chance. We will always be in the game because of the D, just like tonight.

My not-so-obvious player of the game is Ryan Hollins. Dude had that look like AA had in the Cal game, you know, that refuse to lose look. You could tell what he was thinking: "I ain't going out like this." But this was a team effort. Luuuuuuc with 10 and 14. Jordan and AA keeping us in it, despite having subpar shooting nights. DC's penetration. Coach Howland keeping the kids mentally in the game.

We will obviously have a lot more. Just enjoy for now.

Yahoo recap and box score here.

Meanwhile, DSPN leads with this...

Actually, that's not too bad of a choice.

Go Bruins.

Man, at some point tonight I'm going to be able to think straight for a thirty second period...Just not right now.  I'm busy looking for my lungs right now...I think they're in my shorts.
Go Bruins...F@#$% SC... UCLA Fight Fight Fight!

Yeah, I know what you are saying
I am completley hoarse right now from yelling when Luc made that last lay-up.

What a freakin' game.

Ced and Hollins
They simply refused to let their careers end tonight.  Awesome.

All I could think of at the end was that South Park episode where Cartman says "let me taste those sweet, sweet tears".

Morrison and Redick out on the same night.  Awesome.

by LA Seitz on Mar 23, 2006 10:10 PM PST reply actions

My bad
I completley overlooked Ced and his sticky D on AMo all night. We don't win this game without Ced to man up on AMo when AA had to sit.

Adam "Scott Timmerman" Morrison
I agree .. . his tears were just like the time Cartmen fed Scott Timmerman his dead parenst disguised as chili in the "chili con carne-val"!

Do you like the chili, Scott?
I call it 'Mr. and Mrs. Timmerman Chili'

Best SP episode ever.

One more thing
The "on the floor" call on the Collison shot might be the worst call in the history of college basketball.  Thank God it didn't matter.

by LA Seitz on Mar 23, 2006 10:11 PM PST reply actions

I don't know...
...the call on DC when dude got roofed by the baqckboard was pretty bad as well. As was the phantom touch on AA on AMo's 4-point play.

by Ajax on Mar 23, 2006 10:13 PM PST up reply actions

Absolutely a bad call
That was a clean block by the Backboard.  I just want to know when he became a Bruin.  Oh my what a night.

by isodore on Mar 24, 2006 12:19 AM PST up reply actions

Just watched the end again
Hollins.  Clutch, clutch free throws, and a great box out that drew the foul on Batista.

LRMAM.  Great hands underneath the basket.  Great game winning hoop.  But the biggest thing he did was the steal from Raivio at the end.  Dude makes the game winning shot, then jets down the floor and steals if from their point guard.  Unsung play of the game.  What a great play.

by LA Seitz on Mar 23, 2006 10:18 PM PST reply actions

Good point
Luuuuuc made a great play on that strip from slim shady.

I can't even imagine where we'd be without Luc's inside presence this season.

...he started crying while the game was still going. The Zags were only down by 1. They were a Laettner shot away from winning it.

Gus Johnson
He was making some classic calls down the stretch...as Luc dove to steal the ball at the end of the game Gus yelled, "Last chance to dance!"  Comedy.

Class reaction from Morrisson too:

The strange thing
is that Morrison actually said, "Let's go, Afflalo!" after scoring on him,  if you read the last 3 or 4 lines of the ESPN  Recap, but I guess he just shit-talks during the game.

Morrison comment...
That was an incredible, unbelieveable victory - I have no voice left... just wanted to add that I actually like Morrison, and if we hadn't been playing them, would have been rooting for them.  Was ecstatic to win, but the guy's good for basketball...

from the sportsline recap:

Hollins and Afflalo went to help up Morrison, who was spread on the floor at midcourt. Few then came to hug the crying Morrison.

"That's just a sign of a great program and great people," Morrison said. "They had enough guts as a man in their moment of victory to pick another man up off the floor. That's more than basketball and I would thank them if I could."

Batista
"I'm not going to complain about the refs, but there were some bad calls.  We were supposed to run a play and I thought I got fouled..."

FIRST OF ALL, he complains about the officiating AFTER saying he wouldn't.  Second, if anyone gets to complain about the officiating, it's the Bruins.  Man up J.P., you're better than that...maybe.

by scittles on Mar 23, 2006 11:06 PM PST reply actions

Kind of like saying
"No offense" right before saying something you know is going to offend someone.  He got away with a huge push off with a couple of minutes to go, then grabbed Hollins on that last foul.  And anyone who watched the game knows he wasn't fouled on that last play.

What game was he watching?
Just saw highlights of Batista's press conference on ESPN.  All he could talk about was the bad calls the refs made and how that cost them the game.

Huh?

Perhaps he didn't see the "on the floor" call on DC's late hoop or the push-off/ moving screen parlay on every bucket made by Morrison.

I guess he was still a little steamed that his "One Shining Moment" shot missed by three feet, but what the hell is Batista talking about?!?  Without the refs , there would have been no crushing defeat for the Zags because they would have lost the game by 10.

Go Bruins.

You can thank me
You can thank me for the Bruins winning. I watching at home and my wife was putting my son to bed. I went in to scratch his back at every break during the last 10 minutes telling him he was UCLA's lucky charm.

I think I was kind of freaking him out. But it worked!

This has been a damn fine day......
