The university takes charges of sexual assault seriously," Michael Jackson, USC vice president of student affairs, said in a statement. "Depending on the facts as established by the LAPD, we will determine the appropriate action. In the interim, the student will be placed on interim suspension while the case is pending.

No wonder they have so many problems with sexual assault, Michael Jackson is their VP on student affairs!

It also said:

Sanchez, 19, was released shortly after midnight after posting $200,000 bail, said Los Angeles County sheriff's Deputy Ban Nguyen.

Can someone explain the bond system to an ignorant law abiding citizen? How can he afford a $200,000 bail? If he's found innocent, does it go away? If he's guilty does he have to finish all payments on it?

Bonds

Bonds are issued by bail bond companies, and usually cost about 10% of the face value. When a bond is issued, the bonding company guarantees that the defendant will appear in court at a given time and place. The government entity in whose court the defendant must appear, is protected by the bond. If the accused skips bail, its usually the bail bond company that hires the bounty hunter to capture the accused, and thereby recover a portion of the lost money.
