Bag of groceries worth $150 v. free rent worth $18,001 (Updated)
UPDATE (8/9):NCAA just reinstated Dwayne Jarrett this afternoon. The total value of (free rent) benefit Jarrett received by living in the apartment was $18,001. Yet he is not going to miss a single game. So it may be a good time to call the NCAA at 317-917-6222, and ask them (politely) how can they explain way reinstating USC WR after determining he had received $18,001.00 in free rent when they previously suspended a UCLA All American LB (Donnie Edwards) for taking $150 worth of groceries (left at his doorstep)? A question everyone should ask the NCAA today.-N
So bruinwinna in the comment threads concerning Jarrett getting extra benefits in the form of thousands of dollars worth of free rent raised an excellent point:
One story that stands out the most, for me, is that of former UCLA standout linebacker Donnie Edwards, who currently plays for the San Diego Chargers.
While at UCLA, he was an All-American football player who was suspended for a game because he accepted a gift.
The gift wasn't a car with shiny rims on it, or an all expense paid trip out of town or any other perk that college athletes receive, which you may have heard of on the news.
The gift was a couple of bags filled with groceries waiting at the doorstep of his room. It may sound silly, but he was suspended for one game. The incident was even investigated by the NCAA.
The current NCAA rules and regulations read: "DO NOT provide a student-athlete or friend any benefit or special arrangement. The NCAA considers these as an 'extra benefit' and they are specifically prohibited."
So, the groceries that Edwards received from an anonymous source were ruled as an "extra benefit" and specifically prohibited. Thus, came the punishment.

Photo via the Medici
UCLA of course did the right thing and made sure all the rules were followed with regard to Donnie's infraction even though it was trivial. Donnie Edwards was suspended for one game for taking groceries, while Trojans are spinning that their superstar shouldn't be suspended for a single game even though he apparently got thousands of dollars of free rent. And you wonder why we think we are fundamentally different from those corrupt and immoral imbeciles from South Central? Again, if you haven't done so, make sure to call these numbers and point these officials to Petey's comments in the LA Times that Jarrett shouldn't be missing a single game:
NCAA 317-917-6222
Pac-10 925-932-4411
I am sure these guys are not going to be all that amused to hear from a coach with soiled track record on how to act on NCAA infractions.
And you may want to bring up this Donnie Edwards and find out from them whether the NCAA or Pac-10 will have different standards when it comes penalizing athletes from different Pac-10 schools from same town who have been found taking extra benefits under the NCAA rules.
Simple question really. If UCLA's All American was suspended 1 game for taking $150 worth of groceries (left at his doorstep), just how many games should Jarrett miss as he reportedly received $10,000 in free rent?
GO BRUINS.

Hold up
Good job coming on here and proving his point about you jackasses all thinking that you're above the law. Show me where his hatred of the trOJans makes the thousands of dollars of free rent and the subsequent NCAA violation go away? What's that? It doesn't? Then shut the hell up, blowhard. You trOJans are just dumb as hell.

Will make this simple for you
And before comparing any one to Anne Coulter, point me to one instance where AC used facts. Looks like your political comparsions are all mixed up.
And in any of your comments you have not offered one fact to counter what I wrote is out of line.
My question remains if you were in NCAA's shoes based on the facts you have from the reports, would you even think about reinstating Jarrett without suspending him for any game?
If you can stick to facts and rational analysis than you are more than welcome to post, but if you resort to another personal attack you will be gone from BN.

Deleted only a single post ...
Again if you want to engage in a discussion that is reasonable, fact based, then go ahead.
But if you are going to start flailing away calling moderators name, then yeah ... uh ... those comments will be deleted.
If you can engage in a discussion on merits then fine. But asking that from a Trojan is too much.

Your opinion
And why should we believe Chetet Petey given the track record of all the numerous incidents of (alleged) violence and NCAA transgressions that have taken place under his watch?

Don't know.
Look, there's nothing I can say that would convince you of Pete Carroll's character and ability. He's the enemy, right. He is responsible for rise of USC football as well as 66-19. I've met him several times on campus. He's a great guy. He works hard at his craft and has great passion and vision for it as well. I'm sure that's how you guys feel about Coach Wooden. My intent isn't to offend anyone with this next comment, so I apologize in advance if I do. Do you guys believe Coach Wooden knew nothing about the Sam Gilbert controversy? Maybe the benefit of the doubt is also in the eyes of the beholder.

Sam Gilbert nonsense
If you can dicuss the points on this specific post on merit, then it is all right, but if you are going to babble away without making any coherent point, and insulting Coach Wooden, then I'd recommend you STFU.
Otherwise you will be gone ... permanently.

I don't understand how that's an insult
As is, I don't know what the issue is, but your complete avoidance of it makes it sound as though you're hiding something. Summarily dismissing something doesn't make it go away. Its what you've been antagonizing us for this entire offseason.

Take some notes
If you believe that this blog has no right to demand a certain outcome of this violation, then certainly Cheetey Petey does not, as the coach of the violating program. So there's your argument blown to bits. Is it any wonder that we are vocal about someone gasp being held accountable for wrongdoings? After all the crap these thugs get away with? I (and I'm sure the rest of this blog) couldn't give a flying fuck about your opinions on the tone around here. When you're wrong, you're wrong. jarrett is wrong, and needs to pay the price, just like everybody else.

So what?
Do you really think USC is that all-powerful? Do you really think we can bully and bribe our way out of everything (making the Bruin assumption that we do)? Do you also believe in the "magic bullet" theory in the JFK assassination?
Paranoia...

Asshat
While Pom Pom is weak and cowardly that he did not have the balls to suspend a fresmen linebacker even though he punched out the brain of another student on campus.
Now you are really all that powerful. Just corrupt.

Accountability
Jeez, do all bruins act like children or is it just the haters on this blog?
I admit that I am probably seeing the situation through cardinal colored lens but I don't see how you can call our program corrupt simply because PC didn't suspend a freshmen linebacker. From what I remember about that story, there were circumstances that PC felt were relevant to him not being suspended. I think his father had recently passed and PC took that into consideration.
Look, I don't want a blind eye turned towards our current or former athletes (I wish OJ would be rotting away in a cell right now.) That's not my point at all. I do want, no demand, accountability for wrong-doings. I just find it unnerving that Nestor feels the need to try and take matters into his own hand and try to sway the NCAA and Pac-10 one way or another. It's none of your business! Get a life... Oh, and please don't post that ridiculous Trojan Al post. No one takes that clown seriously. He's a joke and an embarrassment to the Trojan Family.

Does this mean that ANY current player's parent...
If that's the case, what's to keep the parents of current players from trying to recruit new hotshot freshmen that will likely make the pros (and therefore can afford to pay back rent) by offering to cover their room and board?
WTH is this all about?

Jarrett's Rent money
Is it just me trying to understand the logic of this payback and having my head spin??
If he couldn't afford to pay it through the year, how is going to come up with the money to pay for it now. He should be required to account for where this new found wealth is coming from. He should also not be allowed to practice or be in games until it is paid in full.

Let's not get carried away--
I can perfectly understand that Leinert mother was concerned that she wanted her son to live in place that was reasonably safe--something that's not so easy to do on a student's budget around SC, and Leinert's father stepped up to underwrite the situation. It's entirely sensible, and I did the same thing for my kid when his roommate could not pay the full tariff for housing.
It seems to me that the NCAA lives in a completely different world. In Oklahomo or Nebraska, I'm sure that $1,350 a month, 2-bedroom apartment is fairly easy to find. In LA, it's fairly difficult.
I am sure that most of the kids at UCLA and SC have a difficult time trying to make it on a limited budget. It's pretty hard in my view to characterize Leinert's father or Jarrett as cheaters under the circumstances.
Why not cut them some slack on this one?

Cut them some slack?
Exactly what does Leinart's parent do so that he can afford to shell out thousands of $ paying for a rent for his son and his team-mates. That's a question no one is asking.
Where did Leinart's Dad get that $ from to put up two kids for free rent.
Most kids at UCLA have a hard time finding apartments in affordable budget. But they manage. So do kids at USC.
Why should Jarrett get extra benefits just because he is a football player?
Again what doest Mr. Leinart do for a living? I'd like to know how he can afford to pay thousands of $ of free rent not just for his son but also another team-mate?

More Specific
Possibilities:
Borrow the money from his agent
or
Borrow from Leinert's Dad (it worked once for him).
