Perspective on UCLA's "10 win" 2005 season

A friend of mine just sent me the following on last year's 10 win season and putting it in perspective. Interesting stuff.  Puts all the talk you hear about Dorrell won 10 games so he must be OMG the best coach ever in context:

There seems to be a common error regarding how many 10-win seasons UCLA has in its history. The correct answer is 7: 1946 (10-1), 1982 (10-1-1), 1987 (10-2), 1988 (10-2), 1997 (10-2), 1998 (10-2), and 2005 (10-2).

But even this is extremely misleading because UCLA played fewer than 10 games from 1919-1931, 1937, 1943, 1945, 1947, 1949-52, and 1954 (22 seasons) and only 10 games total in 1932, 1934-36, 1939-40, 1944, 1953, 1956-60, 1962-64, 1966-69, and 1971 (21 seasons). Thus, in 22 of UCLA's 87 seasons of college football, UCLA could not have won 10 games, and in 21 others, the only way UCLA could have won ten games was to go undefeated.

UCLA has only played 12 games in a season 22 times: 1938, 1975, 1976, 1978, 1981-88, 1991, 1993, 1995, 1997, 1998, and 2001-05. Seven of those (31.8%) have been 10-win seasons.

In addition, as many as nine other seasons quite likely would have been ten-win seasons if the team had played more regular-season games and/or there had been the number of bowl games there are today -- for example, 1935 (8-2, no bowl), 1952 (8-1, no bowl), 1953 (8-2), 1954 (9-0), 1955 (9-2), 1957 (8-2, no bowl), 1966 (9-1, no bowl), 1969 (8-1-1, no bowl), and 1973 (9-2, no bowl).

With today's 12 or 13 game schedules, 10-win seasons are pretty common, actually. In the Pac-10 alone, there have been 7 10-win seasons just during Dorrell's tenure (the last 3 seasons) alone. USC, UCLA, Cal, Oregon, and Washington State have all accomplished it. Just in this decade, 7 Pac-10 teams (add Washington and Oregon St.) have accomplished it. Indeed, four Pac-10 teams (Washington, Oregon St., Oregon, and USC) have had 11-win seasons since 2000.

I'm not denigrating last season's record. But it is clearly being exaggerated out of proportion when it is discussed in terms of being "one of only X times in school history" we have accomplished it, as if the number of regular-season games and bowl opportunities has been the same all that time.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

I can't wait for this season to start.
This is the year KD has to really prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that this program is on it's way to being feared. 10 wins was a big deal because of how crappy the first two were. Is ten wins great? NO. But on paper it was a huge improvement. The 06 season is the one that will truly measure where this program is.

The measure shouldn't be....
the mere number of wins, but how the teams looks in those wins.  No one can say with a straight face that we looked particularly impressive in many of those wins last year.  One freak win is alright, but how many times did we snatch victory from the jaws of defeat? (Cal, Stanford, Washington State).

Good teams make their mark by convincing the competition of their superiority.  We clearly did not do that last year.  This year needs to be that year.

At the same time...
Good teams also win the close games.  I wouldn't say it's a matter of us looking bad in the games we won, its the fact that we looked horrific in the games we lost.  In 2004 $UC had a plethera of close wins against mediocre teams, but a W is a W and it's rare that a team goes the whole season without at least a few close calls.

The team played a bit over their heads last year, most of us can admit that.  But it was definitely a good season.  I was looking over the numbers and I couldn't believe it but last year was the first year we finished the year RANKED since 1998.  If people want to say we were lucky last year, we were overrated or whatever, that was fine with me, but it was still an exciting season and easily the best since 98, maybe even better considering the low expectations to begin with.

This is NOT to say that Dorrell has proven a great deal to this point as coach, because he hasnt, and last year only partially made up for the horrible first two seasons, but I rather enjoyed last season and I wish it our own fans wouldn't put it down so much.

Agreed
Mainly because most of the players are his recruits. Four years is enough to show where your program is heading. It doesn't have to be perfect, just showing good measurable progress (this year would be a demonstration of that).

I have said all along, my judgement on KD comes this season. I would think that nine good wins this year, including a beating of SC would look far better than last years 10 win season. I also define good as beating some of the upper echelon teams & not losing to the bottom feeders.

Justwatching,

Not to appear stupid but you lost me on that comment.

This whole analysis came from a man who hates KD not for what he has done but for who he is. His three egos are/were  M,The, and CH

Whoever he is ...
His arguments are on point.

And we'd love for him to share his thoughts on BN.

sounds like a Bruin to me.

I think I figured it out
Just Watching is claiming that the author of the analysis is Maverick Bruin, and he's calling Mav a racist.

Rather than refute Mav's (The Canadian, & ?) arguements he's resorting to an ad hominem.

Standard Dorrellista tactic
Allege racism if you can't refute the info.

When was racism ever mentioned?
I don't read that in any of the posts. Maybe you should stop bringing up race as a way of attacking other people who post.

Read again ...

Unless Justwatching refutes it I think it is safe to assume he was implying that the writer of the original content "hated" KD because of racial reasons.

Also this whole discussion started from a post on Dohn's blog in which Dohn was downplaying expectations for this season. Koach Karl offered up some cogent arguments refuting Dohn's post. To which another poster responded by calling Koach Karl a "racist." And here again justwatching is doing the same thing. Intstead of countering the arguments/info. in the post he simply denigrates the original writer by saying he "hates" KD (hint is a racist).

Don't leave out the key part
"a man who hates KD not for what he has done but for who he is"

That's where "justwatching" says it isn't about KD's record, but "who he is".  That's the race card being played.

So..
A race card? WTF. I am actually offended that another Bruin would somehow extract that from what I said and accuse me of attacking another post. My only problem is the poster, his history and his views regarding KD. Hell, I actually agree with Nestor on most of issues and his expectations from KD. I didn't see that one coming. I didn't think that my words can be twisted to imply racism; but since you have gone ahead and did, I would like to respond.
First of all, if you the know the poster from past board related materials, you would probably understand on why he posted this. Unlike this website, which has high expectations from the coach and the football program, this particular poster has been predicting doomsday from the start of fall camp. He actually had a website last year predicting UCLA to go something like 2-10. The funny part is, he hasn't attended a single practice and doesn't have any material to work with other than message board posts. Now it is ok to be critical of a coach who has yet to deliver but when you start attacking him personally like he did, it is just stupid. The poster finishes his article by stating that its purpose is not to denigrate last season's record, huh? What the hell is then for? Why doesn't he come out and say that last year was a fluke? What is the purpose of saying Drew Olson did this, Marcedes Lewis did that or my favorite, if not for Maurice Drew, if you are not going to acknowledge the outcome of their heroics? If, If, If... What is the point of bringing up something from the past. The guy won 10 games. Why measure him using a season heavily botched with two horrendous games. Why not measure him with the results of the upcoming season, where KD will not have any excuse about a bad defense or a QB that can't stretch the field?

Thanks for letting me rant, it might sound some babble from a KD blindo, but my history with this website when it was in another name will tell it. Peace

Thoughts
My apologies for inferring racism. Guess I was jumpy after reading the reaction from a Dorrell supporter to a well thoughout post from Koach Karl.

I guess I understand your frustration with the original writer of that post. But couple of observations:

  • I don't think you need to attend a practice to earn the stripes of being a true fan. That is just total bullshit. There are lot of us who would love to go to practice but can't because of geography issues. And not attending practices because of location or work whatever doesn't make anyone a less fan.
  • I think his perspective of the "10 win" season is right on the money. It was an above average season. But given the historical perspective, I just don't think it was one of the better seasons in UCLA football history.
