Restore Pauley - Part IV: A New Hope?

This is Part IV in a periodic series.  Here is Part I, Part II and Part III.

So, enough history, already.  Are we going to get a renovated Pauley Pavilion or not?

We've seen that we can't allow ourselves to be lulled into complacency by the AD's yearly update.  Sure, hearing something intriguing about the proposed flashy new amenities every year or so is all well and good, but it means nothing without any follow through.   And its about time to demand more forthright information about the timing and substance of the proposed project.   But, where does that leave us?   Is there any genuine hope?

I think so.  Despite the obstacles, I think we can have a restored Pauley by the end of the decade.  And its not because I have a cool $10 million burning a hole in my pocket.  So, why the optimism?  Well, a few things.

First off, we have one of the best teams in the land.  Not only do we have a quality group of players, and incredible incoming pipeline of recruits, and a dream head coach in his dream job, we also have a talented supporting cast, including some assistants that don't get as much credit as they deserve.  What does that mean?  It means that, barring something unforeseen, we are going to have a quality product on the court for the foreseeable future.  It means that we will keep the seats full.  It means that the media, like it or not, will have to keep watching.  And, for all these reasons, the administration will have no choice but to recognize how important the continued vitality of this program is to everything they do.  In other words, we have fertile ground for a renovation project.

Also, the lynchpin of all this success, Ben Howland, has a track record that bodes well for a renovation project.  Anyone been to this place?

Yep, that's the state of the art Petersen Events Center, which is described by the good folks in Pittsburgh as follows:

Symbolic of a bold new era in the history of the University of Pittsburgh is the construction of the Petersen Events Center, a state-of-the-art basketball arena that is located at the peak of the upper campus with a dramatic view of Oakland and the Cathedral of Learning. Completed in the spring of 2002, the Petersen Events Center provides the Panthers basketball team with an advantage like no other. The venue is one of the finest college basketball arenas in the country, providing the very best for players and fans alike.

When Ben arrived in Pittsburgh in 1999, and began an impressive transformation of that program, he also managed to be a part of a successful building project.  By mid-2000, construction crews had broken ground, and on April 27, 2002, the arena opened after a $119 million investment in the project.  And, just like I feel pretty good about Ben getting it done on the court, am also confident that he is working hard to get the Pauley project moving as well.

Second, we have a new man at the top.  And I mean the top-top.  Nestor has already been so kind as to make the introduction.  As you know, UCLA has a new chancellor, Gene D. Block.  It will be a few months before he takes office, but we have at least one reason to hope chancellor Block will make restoring Pauley a priority.  Perhaps you've been here:

This is the John Paul Jones Arena, which opened in the summer of 2006, replacing and almost doubling in size Virginia's previous facility, University Hall.  It hard to tell how much of a role chancellor (then Virginia's provost) Block had in this project, but it good news that he comes from a university that has historically made first class athletic facilities a high priority.

Third, despite my feelings about the direction of the football program, I still have some faith left in Dan Guerrero.  The clock is ticking, and I think we all deserve some information, answers and action, but I can't help but think that the coach who brought us Ben Howland (with a hearty assist from Ben himself) will get this done.  Don't prove me wrong, Dan.

Fourth, we have, well, us.  That's right.  We have perhaps the most engage, energetic, informed and resourceful fan bases, right here.  And we can make a difference.  Listen, I am not one to discount the power of coincidence.  But, I can't help to think that the administration is starting to notice the importance of this project to the larger Bruins nation.  So, as charnaw pointed out, this was released by the athletic department just yesterday.

Pauley Pavilion Project Update

Renovation plan moving forward

Jan. 11, 2007

UCLA has taken formal steps toward a major renovation of legendary Pauley Pavilion. The university is committed to restoring Pauley Pavilion, home to championship Basketball, Gymnastics and Volleyball teams, prominent events and essential student-related activities, to a world-class athletic and cultural venue.
...
UCLA Athletics is presently in the process of generating funding for the project and has developed a list of potential naming opportunities for prospective donors to be recognized for various levels of contributions to the project. The goal is to dedicate the restored Pauley Pavilion on October 14, 2010, to honor Coach John Wooden on his 100th birthday.

UCLA Capital Programs recently published a request for qualifications (RFQ) to begin the formal process to retain an Executive Architect for the renovation and expansion of Pauley Pavilion. Interested parties have until January 16, 2007 to respond with a package documenting their relevant experience. UCLA has formed a selection committee to evaluate potential candidates and anticipates having an Executive Architect in place during the first quarter of 2007.

And, as Allofmybros has pointed out already, its seems like more and more folks, including our friends in the MSM, are starting to take some notice.

Again, I can't get too excited about all this.  On the one hand, I'm heartened by the fact that the athletic department feels confident enough about its progress to announce a tentative 2010 deadline for the "restored Pauley", which, as some folks have already pointed out, would mean that we could expect a funding push by the end of this year (as DG said in December), and even construction relatively soon.  On the other hand, we've heard similar promises before, without results.

But, at least we have some good reasons to have hope.  Sure, the latest press release isn't enough to placate us.  We want to see tangible evidence of progress on this long overdue renovation project.  But, it's a a step in the right direction.

Pauley Restoration
The part of the announcement this week in the LAT that bothers me is that it could be to placate the Bruin faithful on the eve of going to the Galen Center. If we hear nothing after this week, then we will know. For UCLA to "go quiet" is not acceptable now that they have said what they want to do publically. The fund raising results need to be posted and we need to be kept up-to-date either through postings on the blog from the administration or PR releases on a regular basis. Put yourselves on the line AD and get it done!!!

Going quiet
is actually very normal for the initial fundraising stage, so I have no issue with that.  Almost every big fundraising drive I know of has a quiet period.  The reason for the quiet period is to have one-on-one relationship-building meetings with potential leadership donors (aka $1M+) to get an idea of what kind of foundation they can build on in terms of public fundraising.  Despite the appearance, the objective of fundraising isn't to create money target and to try to meet it, but rather to try to raise as much as possible, and spend on the basis of how much you can raise.

The fact that plans have been publicly announced this way with a "hard" deadline indicates to me that I think the seed money's been secured.  Another clue is that DG said that the public phase would start sometime late this year, but when I contacted the Fund about 2 weeks ago, they said that Fund donors will be hearing as early as March.

I also think the frequency of how often you'll hear updates on fundraising will depend on how well the drive is going.  Clearly, the better the effort, the more often we'll be updated.

BTW, just in case some people here don't know, CA prohibits public money from being used for athletic facilities, so 100% of the money for the renovation will have to come from private sources.  One reason why Pitt could build a $119M+ arena is that in PA, they were allowed to use public funds which eventually ballooned to $66M for the public share, which as you can imagine, wasn't exactly met without controversy.

Pauley
Good response. Thanks. If UCLA can do anything at all, there should be good sources for BB renovation money. My comment about "going quiet" comes from them making announcements in the past and then nada after that. It looks like this process has been started before and fallen short of  the next step. Let's hope this time they make it....

Agreed
I think we're making real progress if we see annoucement of the lead architect by end of January and the seed donor by March.  I figure if we're going to try to hit 2010, this is my guess on the timeline:

March 07: Announcement of seed donor/public phase begins
Fall 07: Completion of architectual plans/announcement for general contractor
Jan 08: Selection of GC
March 08: Hit at least 50% of anticipated cost
Summer 08: Permit/review
Fall 08: Begin exterior construction (i.e. lobby areas outside Pauley)
March 09: Hit 85% anticipated cost, begin interior construction
Summer 2010: Finish major construction, testing phase
November 2010: Dedication

This timeline is completely off-the-cuff so I wouldn't use it as "the standard" or anything.  But I'm fairly certain about the following:

  1. Construction will require Pauley to be shut down for at least one season, and that season will probably be Fall 09-Spring 2010
  2. Fundraising will take at least 2 years, and they won't start any major construction until they have at least 1/2 of the funds pledged, so construction won't start until 2009
  3. The public phase will start either in April or Sept. depending on how much press and excitement the BB team gets during Madness.  Obviously, a NC is clearly the best option.

Thanks for the info
for those of us (like me) who don't know how these kinds of projects work.

Well like I said
I'm not even close to being an expert on these things, so I still have to guess on quite a bit, like how much needs to be raised at what time.

My construction project knowledge comes from my own limited experience working on smaller construction projects and talking with a buddy of mine who works on large construction and rehab projects, so he gave me the timeline on that.  I also looked at the timelines for other arena and stadium projects to get an idea of what their fundraising/build timelines were as well.

Pauley
Excellent post Stevenucla!! Let's hope the BB team hasn't peaked too early this season and can make another good run in the NCAA's. I fear SC could be strong tomorrow with Shipp out and coming off a loss.... but I firmly believe another good run in the NCAA's and the funding will come as well.

I'm curious
about what UCLA does in that year where they can't play in Pauley. Do they go to the Forum? Sports Arena? Staples Center? My guess is the Forum with the 5 or 6 biggest games at Staples.

by ryebreadraz on Jan 12, 2007 11:51 AM PST   0 recs

Thinking the same thing
My question though is if you can even still play BB in the Forum?  Do they even still host sporting events there?  The last time I remember anyone even playing ball there were the Sparks in 2000.

by stevenucla on Jan 12, 2007 12:25 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

yes
they've had some high school games there the last couple years and are reportedly trying to get the SParks back now that the Lakers sold them and their lease is in jeopardy.

Where Could The Bruins Play During Construction
I remember when Cal was building their new arena we got to play them in San Jose and Sacremento in successive season. Both times we killed them and it seemed like they had no home court advantage.

If UCLA is going to renovate Pauley, where do we play in the meantime? The Forum?

There used to be . . .
some great bball courts between Dykstra and Sproul.  Hmmmm . . . the old men's gym is still around! :)

by charnaw on Jan 12, 2007 3:59 PM PST   0 recs

No it isn't
Even Men's gym has gotten a face lift before Pauley. You may now know it as the Studen Activities Center. The holes in the wall have been filled and the rims have been raised all the way to 10 feet. Still better than the new Maples...
