EDSBS Punks Geoffrey Strand

I can't say I blame them for clowning this.

Star-divide

If I didn't go to UCLA or was not a Bruin football fan, I'd be clowning that freakinsh show too.

And I would also hurl all kinds of insults.

This is just pathetic. I can see some arguments about having a juggler as part of the band show. But this dude is just a clown. He doesn't belong in a college football game.

Go Bruins!

Geoff's alright. Lay off.
Every school needs your old-fashioned, non-cursing, geeked-up fan to appeal to both the older alums, the kid-toting-but-still enthusiastic young alums, and the mainstreamers.

Do we need some new blood?  Abso-freakin-lutely.  Student yell leaders of recent years haven't been all that creative or distinctive in their style.  I think the last good shtick I saw was the crew that brought a toilet lid with the words "FLUSH 'EM!"  or "FLUSH IT!" to spur the crowd onto noise.

But Geoff Strand?  At best, he's a good, solid long-timer, one who's been there since long before I was a student.

At worst, he's a harmless guy running around in 90-degree weather in a sweater.  No harm to anybody.

Stay With Tradition
Besides, we can always clown EDSBS for their silly UF cheer

(And I'm a fan of Rep. Wasserman-Schultz too!)

Strand bugs the hell out of me
I just think that the crowd is somewhat apathetic anyway, but having a guy up there saying "don't cheer now, wait till I say to cheer" is so bush league.  Fans should be on their feet screaming the entire time our defense is on the field, not just after the opposing team's offense breaks its huddle.  Football is one sport in which the home crowd can have the greatest effect on the outcome of a game, and this geriatric clown is one thing holding back an already tame crowd.  When I was at the SUC game on 12/2, it wasn't Strand or the yell leaders responsible for the intensity of the crowd, it was people and groups in the stands, standing, cheering on their own and that peer pressure shamed fans who are sedate for every other game to join in.  I hardly remember Strand leading our section during the SUC game, which was not the case for every other home game I attended.  I appreciate his intentions, but he is terrible.

Yeah
he is a nice guy and all. I am sure he is a good guy.

But he dresses like a freak. He looks creepy along the sidelines. Frankly I think its kind of embarrassing.

He should limit his little routine to alumni gatherings. But even then, his routine is just silly and embarrassing.

i watched that entire thing waiting for the payoff
and NOTHING happened. it was just what we all know that guy does. i thought something embarrasing was going to happen or he was going to confront a heckler or something.

that being said that guy has always kind of annoyed me. i've always said who's to say he gets to be the voice who represents the bruin fan? but whenever that guy gets on my nerves, which is every game i attend, i just think that at least he's not as gay as that trojan wearing a skirt riding that white horse around the coliseum.

by babyblue98 on Jan 17, 2007 10:12 AM PST reply actions

pathetic!
I am sorry but that guy is pathetic! I don't need someone to tell me when to cheer or not; and I never cheer when someone tells me to!

He looks like a circus clown and his voice is too damn annoying. I couldn't even watch the entire video, because I wanted throw something at him.

Now he could definitely get the crowd excited if he wore a Trojan t-shirt and let people throw tomatoes at him!

I would just go to the games to get a chance to peg him.

Same old stuff
He hasn't changed anything in his routine for as long as I can remember. I have had tickets since the early 80's and don't even remember when he started doing it. A lot of people in & around my section just moan when they see him coming and yell insults at him in between plays.

It's tired, boring and way too childish for me and I've been accused (mainly by the wife) of never growing up.

I appreciate his enthusiasm for UCLA, he should just do it in a different manner.

We are the leading University in the world!
We do not need anything that says we are second rate. Geoffrey Strand, the creep in the Straw Hat that plays second fiddle to him & the Juggler should all be asked to stop representing our school.

When I was at the final four last year our cheerleaders were the talk of the town. They represent our school well but these three losers do not make the statement I want.

As others have said Strand is a good dude and a loyal Bruin but that doesn't give him carte blanche to embarrass the four most important letters in the alphabet: U   C   L   A

You guys all need to chill.
It's really embarassing the way you go after your own. Geoff hasn't done any harm to anyone. If anything he promotes spirit and entusiasm. I don't know if you've noticed but he manages to get the press box side to yell Bruins while the student yell crew doesn't even tell us that it's going on.

Ditto
Geoff is harmless and he works and yells his ass off game after game.  I appreciate his energy and his efforts and he shows the blue and gold colors.  We've got much bigger issues to worry about (KD) than ol' Geoff.

Thumbs up for Geoff
He seems sort of like Janss Steps - both have always been around.

I don't think he's a detriment.  He certainly can't be accused of ever being anything but upbeat and enthusiastic.  And you know it has to kill him to keep rooting so hard when the teams are doing so poorly.

Frankly, I didn't pay all that much attention to him when I was a regular in the alumni section (many years ago), and for that reason I just viewed him as another part of a familiar scene (like the Victory Bell, which used to be permanently present.)

I say that anyone who is such a hard core Bruin should be given a pass.  He has to be caught wearing ketchup and mustard before he's banned from the sideline in my opinion.

Geoff's a hardcore fan
The guy's been arrested (back when he was in school of course) for trying to hire a helicopter to dump horse manure on Tommy Trojan. So I'm OK with him.

This is all the credentials he needs in my book
I wish (a) I had done it and (b) that one or both of us had succeeded.

Bottom line:  Geoff can stand on the sidelines as long as he wants as far as I am concerned.  Those are impeccable credentials.

Chill Out and Show Some Tolerance
From a pragmatic point of view -- if one function of cheering is to create an atmosphere that challenges the opponent, then one must admit that Geoff does much more to achieve the goal than the student cheer leaders can or do accomplish.

When a cheering section gets loud, the noise on the field is deafening. That is to our advantage and Geoff plays that card on behalf our our teams and fans.

I'm not faulting the students; I was a yell leader when I was a student.

Perhaps, the reason that Geoff is so effecitve is that there are so many more alumni in the stands and they can create a lot of noise. And, Geoff can get them going.

Whatever the reason, he should be praised not faulted.

As to being "embarrassed" by people with true passion for our Bruin teams, be it Geoff, straw hat guy, mature lady in the cowgirl had, or the juggler -- I don't get it. A great university celebrates diversity. We should revel in the fact that so many people of all ages and talents love our teams enough to donate time to make a contribution to developing our team spirit.

I don't want us to be like all of the other cookie cutter universities. We are Bruins. We are distinct. We are strong enough to take pride in all who cheer us on.
