Many thanks to Orson over at EDSBS for pointing to this story in the New York Times written by fellow blogger Warren St. John. (HT BON)

As Orson wrote in his post it's a brilliant pieace. The story has nothing to do with UCLA but its one of those stories which is A MUST READ if you love all that is good and holy about sports (and life in general).

Just amazing and beautiful stuff.

Great story but...

Thanks for the link! My wife and I both read and enjoyed it.

I thought it was interesting, though, that there were absolutely no local people who did anything to help in this story--oh wait, there were some, but they were dismissed because they helped out "under the cover of missionary work".

Typical New York Times--Americans bad, everybody else, good.

Aw, Cmon...

you're right, D Hater, it was a nice piece. But why do you need to drag the NY Times and politics into it? It's the STORY...it's about the KIDS. Why do I get the feeling you were more pissed than happy after reading it?

I didn't see it that way ...

plus the last time I checked the team itself (the subject of the story) was made up of Americans too. Thanks. It was a really a story about some dreamers working to be All Americans doing everything the right way. It was a brilliant piece by an NYT writter who also happens to be a die hard college football (Crimson Tide) fan from Alabama.
