How Dorrell Can Save Hs Job: The Doomsday Scenario
Bumped from the diaries. Ladies and gentleman godblesstyus95 points us to the elephant in the room. GO BRUINS. -N
Go Bears?
A win over Cal this weekend sets into motion what I have been fearing for the last couple of weeks: a "Doomsday Scenario" where, by sure luck and happenstance, a season full of unexpected mishaps and upsets produces a Pac 10 Champion (and hence BCS participant) with 2 conference losses. A scenario where, at 8-4 or better, the Bruins, losers to pathetic Utah and Notre Dame, would likely find themselves giddy at the top of the Pac 10. And let's face it Bruins Nation: if Dorrell wins the Pac 10 and goes to a BCS bowl game, the chances he gets fired are, well, fairly hopeless.
It certainly has happened before. 1993 comes to mind, when the Bruins finished 8-4, with 2 Pac 10 losses to Cal and Arizona St., and wound up playing in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1st, 1994.
This season, unlike those of recent years, have 5 teams (UCLA, USC, Cal, Arizona St. and Oregon) that all have a legitimate shot at winning the conference title. Three of them (Cal, Oregon, and USC) already have one loss. Remarkably, of those 5 teams, only Cal and Oregon have played each other already(!). Assuming one team doesn't run the table on the others (unlikely given how this year has unfolded), a season of unprecedented parity will leave each one of these teams with at least 2 or 3 losses before it's all said and done.
Of the 5 teams, UCLA by far has the easiest road, so to speak. They will play all 4 of the other contenders without ever having to leave Los Angeles.
While Dorrell and his minions will certainly spin doctor a successful conference finish, it won't be so much what the Bruins do, but what the other contenders are up against.
A win over injury-riddled Cal would be a good start, getting them to 4-0 in conference, 2 games clear of the Bears with a tie-breaker, with Cal then having to travel to ASU the next weekend.
USC, still the most feared but appearing more and more mediocre each week, arguably has the most difficult task, having to play Cal, Oregon, and ASU all on the road.
ASU, currently leading the Pac 10 at 4-0, would be a close second, having to play Cal, at Oregon, at UCLA, and USC all in succession.
And then there's Oregon, who right now appears to be the best Pac 10 team, but already saddled with a home loss to Cal, having to play USC and ASU back to back, followed by Arizona and UCLA on the road. Oh, and don't forget they'll have to do that without 2 of their top receivers (Paysinger and Colvin, lost for the year to injury).
Protect their home turf against their Pac 10 foes, one feat that Dorrell has actually accomplished with a modicum of success, and beat a couple of 2-5 teams on the road, momentum on their side, and the Doomsday Scenario is complete.
So it's all really set up nice for Dorrell and his Bruins. A season of unprecedented parity, unexpected defeats of preseason favorites Cal and USC, a "what better can you ask for" home schedule, devastating injuries to other contenders, has paved the road for a very Lavinesque finish. Really, it doesn't even seem an idiot like Dorrell could screw this up, can he?
I know, I know, the way they looked against Utah and Notre Dame, and you're thinking "no way" they'll win the Pac 10. For sure, even with the season setting up so nicely for Dorrell, I still expect at least a couple of ugly losses in store for this team. 4 of the last 6: that's all it will take. Doomsday.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

Thank you
But then again I just remembered Dorrell is coaching us. My panic attack just ceased, it's relieving to know you have a coach who can find every possible way to lose a game at a time when you really need to lose some games. I never thought I'd be so happy to have Dorrell. It's really reassuring.

This prompted me to look through...
After making some reasonably educated guesses regarding the outcome of the rest of the conference games this season, a win over Cal this weekend could set up a conference title.
[my prediction if UCLA wins - 7-2, tie with Cal, UCLA gets the tiebreaker for head-to-head win. ASU/Oregon/$UC tied at 6-3]
Again, this is Dorrell coaching (loose usage) the team. You have to figure he will throw away a game we should win, and make this easier, even if he does hold serve at the Rose Bowl.

if UCLA runs the table
Sleep easy because IT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN.
CAL, USC, ASU and OREGON are all simply better, faster, and much better coached. (and USC isn't coming off a brutal four game stretch like last year, so don't get your hopes up). The most likely scenario is we lose all four of those games and one of the other two. That's 5-7. See you later, loser. Even if the Bruins win one of the 4 and both of the other two, that's 7-5, and a loss in a pathetic mid-november bowl is 7-6 for the FOURTH YEAR IN FIVE>>> See you later, loser.
Why anyone thinks we'll beat Cal is beyond understanding. I don't care what happened when they played anyone else... this is KD!

But, But...
Isn't that what they say in the romper room/BRO...?
The above teams should all beat us, but for all of Dorrell's history of screwing up when it counts, he has a knack for winning a game at the Rose Bowl that he has no right doing. I don't think Cal is it, but Oregon and ASU are real possibilities for that game.

It's been the elephant
It won't happen. I have been to every home game and have watched every away game. We are not a very good team. We never show up for the first half. Our QB situation is wretched. We commit too many ridiculous penalties. We do not appear to be highly motivated. We've gotten blown out by two horrible teams.
Oh, yeah, the playcalling and coaching suck hard, too. This team is mediocre at best.
I truly believe we may not win another game this year. For the players' sake, I hope I am wrong. I would never wish that on them.
For the betterment of the program, either DG will see the light no matter what happens the rest of the way, or yes, we do need to lose a few more games (humiliating blowouts, preferably) for those last few Dorrellians to come around.
Seriously, Doomsday will not happen. Dorrell is phoning it in at this point. He has shown no anxiety or angst at all. Recall his ridiculous quotes ("sleeping well" and "it is what it is"). I truly believe he doesn't care anymore. He will continue to find a way to lose games we should win. He will find a way.

Strangely
I would almost bet that kd will be gone by at LEAST the beginning of next season.

The perfect window of opportunity
As long as His Clownship stays in command, he can take credit for any game UCLA manages to win. (Of course, he is not held accountable for games that are lost.)
He can dodge another bullet. That bullet, of course, goes straight into the heart of UCLA football.

Just remember
We would have to beat OSU, which beat SC and of course, SC itself. No way in hell, right?
Yet, he did just that...

Yeah
And it's not like KD has to run the table from here on out either. As I said, even with 2 more losses, which in itself should be inexcusable given how everything is laid out, I can easily envision that being good enough to win the conference this year.
And just this morning there was word that ASU lost its starting tailback (Torain) for the year. So it just got a little bit easier for KD.

Optimistically Pessimistic...
I'll remain "optimistically pessimistic" that we'll pull the usual Dorrellian second half, meaning losses to Cal, Arizona, Oregon, $UC, followed by an invitation to the Poinsettia Bowl for a grudge match with those pesky Wyoming Cowboys.

Being realistic here...
This is what the rational part of my brain is saying. I never cheer for UCLA to lose, but just being very impartial about things, the best record I see at the end of the season is 6-6.
This is not due to the passion of players, but the incredibly poor preparation that the coaching staff has given them. The confusion and ineptitude shown by CTS and crew is blatant for all to see.
There are all sorts of hypothetical situations, and sometimes the improbable does come to pass (see UCLA vs u$c in 2006), but the inertia of the past 5 years has finally caught up to CTS, and the team he is fielding is showing for all to see that he just doesn't have the right stuff to be a coach at the major college level.

Dammit!
I see us going 2-4 the rest of the way. And one of those 2 wins will be a Lavinoma moment, against Cal IMHO. I, like Nestor, have that weird feeling that they'll pull this off somehow. If any team in the Pac-10 is more cursed than we are, it is Cal (blessed with their coach, cursed by weird occurrences). We'll finish 6-6, I think, and might go to some lame bowl as KD still tries to save himself, instead of bowing out like Toledo.
by tasser10 on Oct 18, 2007 12:05 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Nothing to fear
6-6 tops, 5-7 most likely. Winning the Pac10 and going to BCS bowl? Ain't never gonna happen, and yes I know that's a double-negative but I am feeling doubly negative towards KD, who I hope doesn't let the door hit him on the ass on his way out in December.
Fear not, fellow Bruins, the Dorrell era is coming to an end.

Even If We Win Out, The Case to Fire KD is Strong
If we win out -- we should have had an undefeated season -- and be playing for #1.
We should never let KD or DG off the hook -- Utah and ND are enough to end KD's reign.
And, a "win may be a win" -- but our ugly wins say something about the program. The AD has to look at the quality of the program. He was fooled by the 10-2 year, fooled by the sc win, I have no idea what he was thinking after the nut bowl ---
But, we must continually chant the mantra "A good coach would not have lost to Utah and ND". Winning out only proves that we had talent, not coaching. This is so lavinesque. You think DG has learned form this? I sure hope so.

2 points on this:
(2) ...except for the fact that the Lousiville website bio page ( http://uoflsports.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/kragthorpe_steve00.html ) for Kragthorpe features a VERY curious endorsement:
"Steve is a proven coach. I coached with Steve in the past at Northern Arizona and knew he had all the qualities to be successful. He's done a great job at Tulsa and I am sure he is going to build on that success at Louisville. Steve is a great hire for Louisville."
Huh? CTS giving hype blurbs for other head coaches? At the Div. I level???

Kraigthorpe Is Losing in a Building Year --
From that same article about Kraigthorpe:
"What Kragthorpe inherited was a team with plenty of holes -- especially on defense -- and, perhaps, not enough in the pipeline to fill them. .... the defense, which had to replace first-round draft choice Amobi Okoye up front, two starting linebackers and three-quarters of its starting secondary, was just as crucial to the team's success a year ago."
http://www.courant.com/sports/hcu-desmond-1017,0,2518960.story
It's not a fair comparison. The fact that Utah beat them, too, doesn't make Utah a good team. It makes Louisville unexpectedly bad.
And, BTW -- for all of those who wanted Kraigthorpe here, I think his pedigree and references make him sufficiently questionable that we need not take the chance.

Not really...
Luckily, the chances of that are virtually nil. There will be a couple wins and a few ugly losses, and another trip to the Nut/Las Vegas/Poinsettia or some other joke bowl game, followed by KD getting a text message from DG saying "C U L8R"

The good things about a LV Bowl Trip
(2) An easy way to convince the wife to go to Vegas (assuming that the kids can be adequately baby-sat for 2 days).
(3) Mid-week, post-Christmas, pre-New Year's room rates in Vegas -- I stayed in a HUGE room at Harrah's last time facing up the Strip for $29 plus tax.
(4) Win or lose, steak and eggs for under $4 in a casino for a post-game meal.

agree 100%
But that battle is impossible to win at UCLA even if we go 9-3 and to an okay bowl. If we win the Pac 10 forget it... part of the reason I think the focus on removing KD should really be on why UCLA's football expectations are so low.
10-2 and playing in the Rose Bowl will make 99.9% of the fans ecstatic... even when we lose by 40. That we should be competing for national championships in football doesn't show up on most people's radar, even most of us here in this looney bin.

Go Bears? Doomesday? Unpresedented Parity?
You said:
"And let's face it Bruins Nation: if Dorrell wins the Pac 10 and goes to a BCS bowl game, the chances he gets fired are, well, fairly hopeless."
And you start it with: Go Bears?
Question: What is more important, KD loosing his job or UCLA winning the Pac-10 and a BCS birth?
If you are implying that we shouldn't win any more games.. I have a serious problem with that.
Question to you guys:
What would you rather have:
- Loose a bunch of pathetic games and KD looses his job
- KD wins the PAC-10 by running the table and goes to a BCS bowl and keeps his job?

If losing to Bears mean insuring the Doofus' firing, I am all for it.
I rather suffer this season, if it means it will bring us a Coach like Howland who will have us winning multiple Pac-10 titles and in position to compete for number 1 in 3-4 years,

The long run versus the short run
We are mediocre, and have been since the 20 game winning streak ended. There have been no TV ads showing our head coach openly talking about winning a national championship. We now talk about competing in the Pac-10. There is no expectation of winning, and certainly no expectation of dominating the Pac-10. Now, all we want to do is "compete." (Plus, we want to thank elite programs for letting us play them.)
And we have been lead into this position for the past several years by a head coach who by any definition is bad, and who should never have been hired in the first place.
So what do we do? Where does the program go. If the status quo (i.e., the coaching staff) doesn't change, then there is no reason at all to believe we will ever recover. We will be a permanent door mat. We will be a perennial Duke in terms of football. We might as well put a few thousand dollars into renovating Drake Stadium for a 10,000 seat football stadium, because that will be what we deserve.
I want DG to tell us where he stands. Is he going to make a statement like Nebraska did, and say flat out that they want football emphasized? Or is he going to say that football is no more important than any other sport, including intramurals. If that's his position, then he should say so. If that's not his position, he should say that, too.
If UCLA is going to make a committment to its students, alumnni and fans to have a first rate football program, then DG has to ask himself if his current coach is the man for the job. I want to hear his answer to that question. If DG (a) wants to ratchet up the football program and (b) thinks CTS is the man to do it, then DG is delusional and needs to be replaced forthwith.
And now we put our tootsies in the Rubicon from a rooter's perspective. I want, will root for, will ask the football gods to arrange for, and will do whatever karma or mojo adjusting has to be done to get CTS fired. That is what is necessary to save the program. That's the long run picture. If a 66-3 loss to Cal will get CTS fired immediately, that's what I want. If CTS is going to be replaced if we're 6-0 or 0-6 in balance of the season, then I'll root for 6-0.
If DG is still waffling (which seems to be his permanent state, given the total lack of any statements from him), then alas I must root for as many 66-3 losses as it takes. That's the long run approach. That's what the current crop of freshmen need, so that maybe by the time they're seniors, the football version of Coach Howland will have turned things around. Students deserve to have fun during football season. CTS has stolen that. I hope that in the long run that gets fixed. The long run looks for a long term cure, and that may mean a lot of pain in the short run.

Ok, losing.. not loosing, my bad.
I can understand your sensitivity to my question.
I have to respectfully disagree. I'd rather go 6-0 than 0-6. I'm more likely to be struck by lightning than go 6-0, however; my dislike/anger for KD hasn't reached a point where I want to lose football games.
But I now understand your point.

The team has cancer
I want to see UCLA win, and if they do, then maybe CTS will have shown some growth. I really doubt that is going to happen. He will continue to show that he doesn't have a clue, the L's will accrue, and we get a new coach next year.

Halloween already?
Yes, this is "Possible" but I don't think it is "Probable".
Cal, @Wazzu, @Zona, ASU, Oregon & @USC.
If I put my Kool Aid glasses on, the best I see is 3-3 and that is being optimistic. I wouldn't be surprised at all if we lost all 6. Cal, ASU, Oregon & USC are all better teams even with the injuries and for sure, better coached. Historically, we have had problems in Pullman and the last time we went to Tucson, we got smoked.
If I have to root for our opponents in order to get KD out of here, I'm prepared to at this point. I'll never forgive KD for making me feel this way. NEVER.

Que Sera Sera
For those of you struggling for an answer let me provide a little therapeutic help. Stop worrying about it, just show you support and cheer for the Bruins. Wish them to do as well as possible and forget about the consequences on Dorrell's future. I wanted the Bruins to beat Utah, it didn't happen. I wanted the Bruins to beat Notre Dame, it didn't happen. Dorrell has a track record that indicates he can not make it through this season without more loses. That will hopefully seal his fate. All we can do is keep pointing out his failings, whether they occur in victory or defeat. After that, as the song goes, "Que sera, sera, whatever will be, will be"
by Bruin77 on Oct 18, 2007 5:12 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I respect that
Every Bruin fan has one thing in common: we all want what is best for the program. To some, it doesn't matter whether we win or lose; they will root, root, root, and trust everything will take care of itself. It seems that you fall into this category. To others, unconditional support is a bit harder to come by. A problem is identified, and the primary focus above all else is to correct and/or remove that problem.
It is clear that the problem has been identified. I have a strong sense that we are on the verge of removing that problem. However, it is clear that there are still certain sets of circumstances that need to happen for this correction and removal to come to fruition. Conversely, there are certain sets of circumstances that can happen that may actually keep this problem around longer. It is these sets of circumstances that come into direct conflict with the notion of unconditional support.
Hopefully in the near future we will all look back upon this as an ugly and painful chapter in our football program. We will realize that the painful losses we sustain now were necessary to promote change for the greater good.
I can't wait for a victory to finally feel good.
