Hey, What Happened To My Comfortable Win?!

I am just shocked and stunned beyond belief.

I was told after Cal game to just "enjoy" the win. I was told that victory actually meant something.

I was told Pat Cowan was close to 100%.

I was told we had an "excellent practice."

I was told that our defense led by a genius (!) was going to give us their "best game."

I was told that "effort" was not going to be "an issue."

And I was told by my head coach that toughest part of today's game was just "getting there."

Well the certainly got there. I mean this picture and my television cannot lie. The Bruins did certainly got there:

Photo Credit: AP Photo/Dean Hare (ESPN)

But what happened there? (Box Score)

So someone can you please explain to me what happened to my comfortable UCLA win?

I am looking for it.

Oh wait? Did we lose? Really?

No worries. We are still 4-1 in the Pac-10 and in "great shape for what we want to accomplish, which is win the Pac-10 title"!

I mean that's why we have those wristbands!

GO BRUINS.

Ty
I love it.  I'm glad you got the first post here after the diary.

The Kool-Aid swillers just loooooove to swing by with their hit-and-run posts after our victories, but they hide under Mama's skirt when we suffer humiliating losses.

Dorrellistas:  We know you read this board and we are calling you out.

I Don't Want to Hear How Good the D Was
That is total apologist BS.

I don't buy into the "oh, they were on the field so long crap."

They sucked in the first quarter BEFORE they were "tired". They could not tackle. They got run against by a team that can't run. They had NO pass rush (seen that before?).

One reason they were on the field so long is that they couldn't force a 3 and out. Yes, if you allow teams to get first downs, you are on the field longer.

I am so sick of people saying the D is ok and that the problem is with the O.

What games are you watching?

DW cannot coach a victory against any divere offense. He can only coach against the "pro style" offense.

Head coach? NFW!

What a quandry. KD should be fired, immediately. If DG was thinking of bringing in DW -- he won't after this game.

My answer: Bring back the towel guy. He could not be worse!

What's not to buy?
They gave up ten points in the first half.  They gave up 14 in the fourth quarter.  You can ignore that if you want, but they were clearly worse at the end than they were at the beginning.

And sorry, but the team only score seven freaking points.  I don't care how good your defense is, that won't get it done.

The defense was bad.  The offense was pathetic.  Everyone deserves blame for this loss.

by LA Seitz on Oct 27, 2007 7:40 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I Agree -- They All Sucked
But, that was not good D. And,the apologists are blaming the O.

D isn't just points on the board. They have to protect themselves from being on the field all night by stopping people -- not allowing long drives.

Did you see a pass rush?

Good tackling?

A team that cannot run, ran all over us -- before the D could claim it was "tired".

It was a total team failure.

Even the special teams did not look good.

212 yards, 36 carries for Tardy,
28 of 46, 271 yards passing for Brink. 27 points. That's what not to buy.

The defense played fine for this game
For nearly the entire game, WSU was held to only a 6 point lead.  All the O had to do was score and put away WSU.  Unfortunately, the O was coached by Duh-rell.  If you are a good enough team (we were 1st in the Pac-10) playing the last place team, it should not be an issue to march 80 yards down the field and score.

by mark the bruin on Oct 27, 2007 7:43 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Mark, you're dangerously close to the Kool Aid
I got back to the game when it was 13-7 in the third quarter, and looked at the stats on Yahoo.  We had been doubled up in everying by that point.  We gave up an enormous number of yards.  You and many others blame the offense for that for going three and out.  But what kept the defense from making Wazzou go three and out?  There was a reason why Wazzou has a crummy record coming into this game.  They weren't an offensive juggernaut who lost a coupld of heartbreakers by scores of 54 to 53.  Their offense sucked.  But not against our defense.

I give zero credit to our defense.  (Or to anyone else, for that matter.  Even most of the people doing the posts had an off day.)

by Fox 71 on Oct 27, 2007 7:54 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

What kept
the D from putting up back-to-back-to-back-to-back 3-and-outs?  This is silly, because we should all be HAPPY we're that much closer to waving the Jellyfish goodbye... but while we're at it: Please, PLEASE let's make the distinction between being able to stop a shitty offense for a few quarters of piss-poor execution from being forced to defend 80-f*cking plays a game and getting so worn down and beat up from being on the field all damn night that my kids Pee-Wee team could move the ball on you... PLEASE?!??

I don't think it's excuse making to admit the obvious: Football is a 2-sided game and at SOME point, you DO need your offense to win games... you need SOME kind of help so you can rest/heal/coach your people on the sidelines.

It's like one oar of the boat is broken... you will not move in straight lines.

D Stat's
Gave up:

545 yards total O
274 yards rushing against a team that could not run
5.4 yards a carry       "        "   "        "       "       "    "

Allowed 44% 3rd Down Conversion Rate against a team that could barely convert before this game.

Had 0 sacks

3 Touchdowns and 2 field goals to a pathetic team

And, I cannot remember how many penalties

Sorry, that is not acceptable D.

Saying we stayed within 6 for a while is like saying we can define our season game by game.

You are supposed to play D all game.

Everyone fails this week. O, D, special teams and coaches.

There is no degree of suckiness. It doesn't matter that one unit sucked less. Sucking is sucking.

sjh

by Class of 66 on Oct 27, 2007 7:55 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Well okay, I guess they did suck
With WSU's offense sucking the way it did (can't score even a FG from inside the 1 with 4 downs?) and not putting up any points, it did make the D, on points anwyways, look like they were doing okay.

Aw fuck it, I'm trying to find something - anything - positive about this game.  Is this it?  Are we going to collapse the rest of the season?

by mark the bruin on Oct 27, 2007 7:59 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The Positive is that KD will Be Fired
Even if we win out -- you cannot retain a coach who loses to 3 sucky teams.

In fact, I believe there's a chance that KD will be fired, tomorrow.

Either way, I think we can root to win all of our next games and be safe that KD can't "save" his job.

So, there is a silver lining.

by Class of 66 on Oct 27, 2007 8:19 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I wish I had your confidence
but only DG knows what he is going to do.

Sadly, I DO NOT believe that KD's fate is sealed. Especially not this year, when 2 conference losses still probably puts you in the Rose bowl. Do you really think KD will be fired if he goes to the Rose bowl? Yes, he SHOULD be fired, but WILL he?

"If I don't do my job, I will get fired" -Karl Dorrell

by godblesstyus95 on Oct 27, 2007 8:25 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He will be fired if
we all, students, alums and fans, keep the pressure on DG.

In setting the pre-season goals, win Pac 10 and go to BCS bowl, there was an implicit goal to win the games we should win, to play with consistency and passion, and to improve in each second half.

The fact that other Pac 10 teams are beating each other, and that the champ may have 2 losses, can never eliminate the implicit goals.

We don't belong in any bowl game. Can you imagine what will happen to us in a BCS game?

And, really, as much as we fear the curse of the Dorrell (last minute wins of symbolic games that "save jobs"), I really don't see us beating Oregon. sc, maybe. But, not Oregon. Their offense is far too diverse for DW to stop. And, their D's not shabby. We won't win games unless the offense scores points and the D stops people. Yes, other teams may stop themselves. But, I don't see Oregon doing that.

He shoud be fired tonight. Or, tomorrow.

But, even if we win the Pac 10, he should and will be fired. DG cannot want to go through another year like this.

How embarrassed he must be.

As long as KD is in charge
I agree with you on the "We don't belong in any bowl game" comment.  We never have with him.  We didn't deserve bowl games his first 2 yrs but accepted them only to get embarassed by mid major talents (Fresno St, Wyoming).  We did beat a terrible NWU defense in 05 but then get shellacked by a down trodden FSU.

To echo your comment earlier as well about losses having a purpose.  I pisses me off to no end that I f'n agree with you.  If KD somehow someway despite himself manages to finish out the season well - a bowl loss would have to seal his fate wouldn't it?  1-4 in bowl games against sub par teams....pathetic.

Oh by the way - I don't want to imagine what would happen to us against a BCS bowl team right now...

You're a complete idiot. You had years of experience re:what to expect up in the Palouse and you didn't have the offense ready.  Norvell is a complete dolt.  And both of you acted like you had no idea that injuries are common in CFB.  Didja tell the offense to take the rest of the afternooon off after Bell's big TD run?  Sure felt like it.   And Christ in a sidecar what the hell is wrong with this limpd*ck offense that pathologically looks for the 3 yard pass play when its 3d and 8?  Somebody is teaching that.  Hint, twin morons of different Mothers,  it doesn't work.  It hasn't worked in your miserably forgettable nearly five year senten- I mean tenure.  I don't care what happens to Norvell - maybe a rescue mission at Sea-Tac when you stop for fuel or whatever. I Don't Want to Hear About Injuries
That, too, is apologist BS.

Ask Ben Howland about coaching with injuries.

This is our most experienced team. Our deepest. By this time in the season, all teams have injuries.

Speaking of injuries -- I want to know more about Bell's injuries -- and why he was put back in the game to hurt himself more.

And, Cowan looked hurt. Why, when the game was clearly out of reach, was he still in the game? Why not play Ossaar?

I am so disgusted.

Watch a game like Oregon v. sc -- you see great football.

Have we played one great game?

sjh

by Class of 66 on Oct 27, 2007 7:36 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Excellent point, also, in response...
Word is that Bell has some kind of ligament damage. Now, the question is whether this was from the first time he was supported off the field, or the second.

As for why he was put back in the game. You and I both know the answer to that. It's the same reason Ossar doesn't get to play, let alone stand in for Cowan when the game was out of reach.

I went to a great HS game last night
Some high school kid kicked a 47 yd field goal into what was at least a "two-club" wind to tie it with agout a minute and a half to go.  Then the team (the favorite) marched down the field and got the ball to the 10 or so.  Instead of going for the field goal (and this school has a good kicker) they went for the TD and made it.

After the game, the QB (a junior who is a far better player than anyone on our team) said that the team practices the two minute drill every day, and they knew just what to do and how to do it.

I am willing to bet that our team does not practice the two minute drill every day.  (Maybe because it's never relevant, but I digress.)

Plant vs. Chamberlain (in Tampa)
Plant runs a spread offense.  Their QB last year was Robert Marve, who is the best passer I have ever seen who isn't named Manning or Brady.  Marve went to Miami, got in a car crash and hurt his non-throwing hand, so he's red-shirting.  Plant's new QB is a kid named Aaron Murray, who is a junior, and Plant isn't missing a beat.  He throws the long ball effortlessly and dead on target.  None of this throwing it under the DB so the receiver can come back to it.  He hits guys in stride who are running full blast.  It's really remarkable.  We have NO ONE on our team who can throw as well as either Marve or Murray.

Murray

Marve
http://rivals100.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?pr_key=48944
4 star prospect, possible QB of the future for Miami

I bet Olson could throw as well as either of them. Well, that is if we ran an actual offense that could showcase his arm...

If there are HS quarterbacks
better than either of those two, I would really like to see them.  Both could hit the long ball and the short ball, and both of them were bullies on runs.  Obviously it's one thing to run over a 180 HS linebacker and another to try it against a D1 linebacker, but these two kids were/are phenoms.

Some of us noticed that Cowan didn't really roll out and throw, or scramble when the o-line fell apart. He sort of stayed in the pocket until the bitter end.

Do you think he had a "talkin' to" from the coaches after the Cal game? After all, the scrambling and improvising in that game completely exposed the pointlessness of Dorrell's play calling to a national audience.

As Mad As I Am -- This Really Doesn't Hurt
How sad. After being a Bruin for almost 50 years -- having been sick at losses, having refused to read a Sunday paper when we lost -- I am totally at peace.

I NEVER want us to lose.

But, it is clear these losses to pathetic teams are serving a purpose.

There is no way we can be stuck with this poser for another season.

In other years, short term was everything to me. There was no future after a loss.

Now, our future seems to be enhanced by losses.

So, as much as I wanted to win, these losses just don't hurt like they would have in any other year.

And, that makes me mad. Fuck you CTS for putting us here.

Mind you, I don't think any of would even think of praying for anything BAD to happen to CTS, but we are praying for our own improvement.

I sincerely hope CTS hooks up at a smaller school -- SDSU?  Nevada?  Idaho? -- coaches there for 5+ years, and builds up a record along the lines of 40-20 or so, and can hold his head up.

The guy is just in WAY TOO FAR over his head.

I'd like to see him flourish.  He IS a Bruin, after all.

I just don't want have to wait through him coaching ANOTHER 4-5 years HERE before he does so.

It's time.

The "last" game of the season will, most likely, resemble 66-19 than 27-7.   See, everyone else in the conference improves over the course of  the Season.  Dolt-coached teams stagnate - every effing year.  And, no, I'm not writing this just because Cal is unmasking ASU right now (13-0) meaning that a "comfortable win" would have left the Bruin in 1st place, and in complete control of their own destiny.  Hey, Karl,  What Cheney said to Leahy.

I'm not surprised
That's sad. I was surprised we beat Cal. What has become of us that we are not shocked when we lose, but surprised when we win??

We really have returned to the Lavin Era at UCLA. the sad thing is that Lavin never coached Football. Until Now. Dorrell is the new Lavin and the UCLA administration has proven that if you ignore the past you are condemned to repeat it.

DG if you are listening, Please Fire Dorrell Now. Please. I want to be a season ticket holder again. I want to wear my UCLA football jersey with pride again. Hell, I wore a UCLA baseball jersey to the Cal game. I want to go into a football season with optimism again. I want to look at our football schedule with a reasonable expectation of beating this team or that team, not like now: I see our schedule and see a season full of possible defeats. I want to respect my head coach. I want to feel like my coach knows more about football than I do. I want our team to play to win, and not to play just to play. Dan, if you are indeed a Bruin family member; if you really care about Bruin football, and i mean really care: I want you to care so much that it physically hurts you when we lose. If you really care about Bruins Football. You will fire Dorrell now. tonight. Don't even let him get on the bus.

Dear Current UCLA football fans,
Why do you allow yourselves to remain in an abusive relationship with this Dorrell-led program?  I saw that he was no good and stopped caring about UCLA football two years ago.

When someone deserving of my love and support arrives to lead the program, I will happily return to cheer them on.

Until then, please take care of yourselves, you all deserve better than this.

Best regards,

Evangelizing to the uneducated.
I posted my misgivings about the coaching staff on some Facebook groups and was unfairly accused of hating our players (typical ad-hominem attack from Dorrell supporters). I checked the profiles and noticed they were freshmen. Freshmen who don't know any better.

My freshman year, we got rid of both Toledo and Lavin. I remember the distribution of 'Lose Lavin' T-shirts. And for the most part, the upperclassmen/alumni did a good job explaining to us new Bruins why they hated these coaches. I even remember getting stopped on Bruinwalk by somebody and being told to wear a Lose Lavin shirt to the game.

It's great that we're sending letters and calling radio shows. We should keep doing that. But let's not forget the importance of involving the current freshmen by educating them.

It's true,
When I was a freshman here at UCLA, I had no clue about the football program. My high school lost consistently, (aka, won about 2% of their games), so having a few victories was okay.

My sophomore year was the come from behind year, and, even though I had the feeling that we couldn't keep coming from behind, it was great to cheer with your classmates.

Only last year and this year, as I have started putting it all into a perspective and started looking at other programs and our history, have I realized that we can do much better.

WHEN Will This Nightmare End?

I'm old enough to remember when, back in the 70's we'd normally whip up on all four of the Northwest schools.  Granted, things have changed since then but this, this abomination is just so totally unacceptable.

DG, in case you are listening, there's something I'd like to say to you.

This is UCLA.

Losses to programs such as Utah, Washington State, and a downtrodden Notre Dame team by a combined 72 - that's right - 72 points (thanks godblesstyus95) is simply NOT acceptable.

Shouldn't we be in the Top 10 or Top 15 on a consistent basis?  Hopefully, preferrably in the Top 5 every 2-3 years?  Well, we SHOULD but it's not happening with CTS at the helm.  When is enough actually enough?

If tonight's latest example isn't enough to convince you than what is?

The problem is obvious ...
We implement a WCO offense and throw for 3 yards on 3rd and 8. Our coaches never let our offense get in any kind of rhythm, which is CRITICAL in a hostile environment.

do you mean in Pullman or at the Rose Bowl?

by Fox 71 on Oct 27, 2007 9:47 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I mean
that rhythm/coaching is crucial in every game, which explains our horrible losses in the Rose Bowl.

However, it is EVEN MORE crucial in a hostile environment, where otherwise talented players face emotional lulls.

This explains why our team is horrible at the Rose Bowl against crap teams, but even MORE horrible on the road against crap teams.

I feel terrible for them
I have a few friends going to cal right now and they are just heartbroken.

What's even worse is that my friends at UCLA are NOT heartbroken because after Utah nobody really believed in our team. I honestly don't know where all these Dorrell supporters are coming from, I've never talked to one in person.

by dokein on Oct 27, 2007 11:17 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Dorrell Supporters
I honestly don't know where all these Dorrell supporters are coming from, I've never talked to one in person.

They're the people that donate to the program, and are in good with Guerrero and the previous Dalis/Donahue/Field Axis of Mediocrity.

I remember a few of my mentors talking about how new people in cabinet positions abandon their previous opinions, and "Go Native" when they join a government department.  They immediately become assimilated into the structure, and forget what they believed in.  It would be like a new State Department member completely forgetting their positions, and siding with State because they're now members of State.

The supporters are the donors.  They go to the fundraisers, they dine at the UCLA breakfasts, they meet the coaches, and they lose all objectivity.  They can't see the forest for the trees.  They're too entrenched.

Well, I'm not entrenched.  And this team is a debacle, the coach is incompetent, and the Athletic Director better wake up fast...Because he is tying his career to a sinking boat.  He better wake up.

by Sweetbreads Bailey on Oct 27, 2007 11:28 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yep!
Those few (very few...) who do see the light no longer donate and therefore no longer fall into this category.

by kevinthebruin on Oct 27, 2007 11:31 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

You're probably right,
It's just confusing. A lot of these big donors have done well in other arenas of life, e.g. business/law/medicine/etc., where any mediocrity would not be acceptable at ALL, no matter how much of a nice guy you are.

So I don't know why they suddenly accept it when it comes to football or government.

by dokein on Oct 27, 2007 11:39 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Actually...
A lot of the Dorrell-supporters are current students who don't have the historical context and don't know any better. A lot of the current freshmen don't know anything beyond what they were told at convocation. The sophomores have never seen us lose to USC yet. As for the juniors, they had that '10-win' season.

If you think about it this way, it's no wonder they see us as extreme. However, we have a much larger scope of our football program and have seen the entire Dorrell-era from start to present.

Here's an analogy: let's say you traded in your old car for a new car. There are endless problems with it. The brakes are bad. The lights go out. The hubcaps fall off. Every time something goes wrong, you fix it. You buy new hubcaps, etc. Now, imagine somebody coming up to your car without any historical background and remarks that your car is great because the hubcaps are shiny and the brakes are new and the lights are super-bright. "How could you get rid of the car! You're crazy and unreasonable!" What they don't know is that the hubcaps and brakes are going to go bad at any minute. When a car is a lemon, you just need to get rid of it.

I understand what you're saying,
but I AM a UCLA student. I talk to students on campus all the time! And I have never met a student who has supported Karl Dorrell after talking to them half a minute about the football program. I mean, it's true that most underclassmen, including myself when I just started UCLA, did not know any better. But the ones I talked to are very reasonable and quickly understand the problem at hand.

Maybe it's the whole "I am online so I can PWNZRO THE OTHER PERSON HEADSH0T" attitude that some of our mentally weaker students have that is the problem.

Thanks,
but it really is all the people on this website that keep hopes alive. Without all the people compiling statistics and doing game analyses, and without all the discussion, I doubt I would have the energy build solid, factual arguments that address poorly supported (or just plain false) "truths" that KD fans often bring up.

by dokein on Oct 27, 2007 11:52 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

But I know these donors
I have friends and acquaintances that frequent these luncheons a breakfasts.  I talk to them all the time.  I hear about "What a nice guy Karl is," and how the donors "Just know" that KD is the man for the job.

They know this, of course, because they are too comfy with the program.  They are more concerned with their place at the table than the state of the program.  It's more important to be jock-sniffing alumni than to be critical of the university.

Being honest and critical is not as important as photographs with the AD.

by Sweetbreads Bailey on Oct 27, 2007 11:37 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Without a doubt,
you have identified the major problem.

How do we overcome people that dine on mediocrity like it is ambrosia?

by dokein on Oct 27, 2007 11:54 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Easy
You refuse to donate.  You send e-mails to the athletic department, talk about your willingness to donate to the program, and talk about how the head coach precludes you from spending your hard-earned money on a losing proposition.

The athletic department lives on donations and fund-raising.  And, so far, I have about three thousand dollars that could have gone toward UCLA, and, instead, and bought me a kickass HD/Surround sound system.

Could have been your money, UCLA.  But you refuse to demand excellence.  My next buy is an iPhone, instead of a donation to UCLA.

by Sweetbreads Bailey on Oct 28, 2007 12:15 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

You don't overcome the people
You stand for what you believe in and do everything in your power, within your sphere of influence, to uphold it. For example, we may not be able to stop them from donating, but we can stop donating ourselves. When the Alumni Association calls you asking for money (they call me every few months), tell them 'not until Dorrell is gone.' The financial impact is small, but it sends a message.

We may not be able to change the donors' minds about Dorrell, but we can change the minds of students. And if enough students have their minds changed, you start seeing the mood gradually change around campus. You see less clubs going to games as social events. The Daily Bruin takes on a more sardonic tone. Conversations about the team become overwhelmingly cynical. You start seeing more "fire dorrell" shirts than den shirts. Pretty soon, the media picks up on it and pokes at it.

Donors or not, the four letters UCLA still stand for something and there is a reputation to uphold. One would like to think that if the mood on campus became overwhelmingly negative, something would be done. Can you imagine if a billboard went up? What if several went up? It would be embarrassing for the administration to see that so many people were willing to put their Alumni Association money into a message. Perhaps embarrassing enough to bring about change. You can ignore blogs, but you can't pretend not to see a billboard.

In conclusion, the student body will be key. Whew, sorry about the long post.

Blame
A lot of kids had bad games tonight.  There were bad passes, dropped passes, missed blocks, missed reads, missed tackles . . . if you could miss it, they missed it.

But this is not on the kids.  If a whole team comes out and lays an egg like that, that's on the coach.  And if your whole team comes out and lays an egg like that for the THIRD TIME THIS YEAR, and your coach still has a job, that's on your AD . . .

Alright Karl, here's a challenge for you. Explain this one. Yeah ... you seemed so confident ... with 20 returning starters. Your O line doesn't seem motivated and your receivers don't seem want to catch a pass. I think this should be enough to tip the administration off that you really don't give a #hit about UCLA football. That you are only here as a step to the next level. A level you will never reach ... something that we can all be thankful for. Coaches like Ben Howland; they care about what they are doing and are deserving of that next level. You will never reach that stage ... you lack the vision and the drive. I hope that we get someone who has those things next week ... if not, next season. I'm a Bruin alumnus and while I was there I expected nothing less than the best for myself. And I achieved it ... for me to expect anything less from this team is a crime. I hope that they throw you out on your ass, you don't deserve to represent us. We deserve more as "we are the mighty Bruins, the best team in the West." Do use all a favor and don't let your team sing this song until they fulfill its premise.
We're marching on to victory to conquer all the rest ...

Who's gonna be the NEW Coach?
Actually rather than rehashing what a horrible loss it was, over and over again, I'd rather enjoy speculating who would be the next Head Coach of the UCLA Football Team.  Quite frankly, it makes me feel better to think about post-Dorrell UCLA Football than to dwell on our current situation.  Yes, it may not happen today, tomorrow or even at the end of this season, but it still makes me feel better.

So I'd love to see more speculation out there.  But honestly, I'm wondering who would be worse than Dorrell at this point?  Could I coach better than he could?  I mean, wasn't Toledo better than THIS?  I had to survive through the Donohue years and hated every moment of it but it was still better than this, wasn't it?  Could there be a worse Coach at UCLA right now?  I mean, who is out there right now looking for a head coaching job that is worse than Dorrell?

Any thoughts on that and who should be our next head coach?

"It was a cat and mouse game"
This was Walker's post-game analysis.  "At times, I had to commit more bodies, take some chances and play one-on-one in the passing game."  Why are we "taking chances" against a mediocre football program like WSU?  Shouldn't this top-rated defense be a juggernaut that dictates the pace and tone of every game that we play?  (especially against sub-standard opponents).

Walker also "wasn't worried about the yards", he was "worried about keeping the points down".  Well DeWayne, don't yards eventually translate into points?  If you give up 10 yards here, 25 yards there, that means that the opposing offense is marching towards the endzone.  In other words, the opposing offense is dictating the pace of the game and doing what it is SUPPOSED to do. He claims that I felt pretty good through 3 1/2 quarters. Then the roof fell in."  That's what happens on a substandard defense, it's only a matter of time before the foundation collapses.

In our search for a new coach, perhaps one of the criteria we should look at are comments made by the coaches AND the players following losses and wins.  I mean, here's what Bruce Davis said in regards to the loss: "I wish I knew why this happens."

If the players are in the dark, obviously the coach is not doing his job.

Contrast this to comments made by Howland.  In losses, both him AND his players know exactly why they lost.  They name a specific play or a specific rotation, they LEARN from the mistake, then make the proper adjustments throughout the season.  Dorrell and his regime, on the other hand, flail about aimlessly, and give general comments... but mostly they give us statements of disbelief.  If they don't know what the problem is, how are they supposed to fix it?

by 01 Bruin on Oct 28, 2007 7:33 AM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

DUH-rell IS the problem
"If they don't know what the problem is, how are they supposed to fix it?"

With DUH-rell and his band of merry men (which Walker has now been exposed as being one of), their problem is that it's not one play that makes them lose.  It's DUH-rell's complete lack of understanding of the college game.  From his West Coast Offense, to his lackadaiscal demeanor (not the way to fire up a bunch of 20 year old kids), to not even seeing that a big part of his job is motivation (these are not pro players getting millions of dollars to play, they kids just out of high school).

Of course they give general statement and flail about - they can't admit the truth, that THEY'RE THE PROBLEM, AND IT WILL ONLY BE FIXED WHEN THEY'RE ALL FIRED.

To people around the country now, the letters U - C - L - A are a joke, they mean underachievement, they mean not giving a damn, they mean making excuses for failure, they mean accepting less than your best.  Is that what those letters mean to us?  If this is what the administration is going to be satisfied with, I'd rather they disband the whole football program and just concentrate on basketball.

Questions for CAD that he doesn't want to answer
DG, let me ask a few questions that might have been asked had you not declined to comment to the press after the game.  Obviously there are lots of reasons why you might not have wanted to speak to the press after the game, such as laryngitis or you had to catch a plane or something like that.  But DG, I think you were afraid someone in the MSM would mention the 500 pound gorilla and ask about the horrible coaching.

DG, you are clearly aware that these are the same players who beat Cal (although that now doesn't seem like a particularly big deal any more).  They are the same players that you thought were good enough to be given a full scholarship (well, that wouldn't include MBT.)  DG, are you going to place the blame for this latest debacle on the players?  DG, our three losses came against teams who were a combined 2-11 when we played them, but we got beat by a combined score of 91 to 19.  DG, are the coaches insulated from any responsibility for these losses?

DG, can you answer the question that has been asked by so many.  Why is it that you, the only person who has the power to do anything about the coaching situation, won't do anything?  Why won't you do your job?

DG, are you going to give the usual two comments at this point?  Is it your position that "You can't fire a coach in mid season"?  The obvious response to that statement is that it's nonsense.  Of course you can.  The question is not one of power, but is one of willingness.  You can fire him, but will you?  And I will not refuse to believe that there are some all-powerful forces in the background who are tying your hands.  I haven't seen Obiwan Kenobi waving his fingers and saying "These aren't the droids you want," and "You don't want to fire CTS."  And of course, you have never told anyone that you are merely a figurehead, and that the actual Athletic Director sits in some dark office somewhere working on the plans for a new Death Star.

And DG, if your second excuse is that recruits will jump ship, then I have some news for you.  Some are already jumping ship according to something I read (I think BRO.)  I just glanced at the headline, and it said something to the effect that two "verbal commits" were visiting other schools.  Any surprise there?  DG, do you think any high school blue-chipper with NFL aspirations would want to play for a school whose claim to fame is ..., uh ....  Well, you get my point.

DG, you cannot avoid facing the problem.  The DG legacy is being formed right now.  Will your tombstone say "He rejuvenated basketball, but he totally ignored football, and that proved to be what cost him his job."  DG, your real constituency wanted to hear your post game comments last night.

And I hope you are aware that "DD" can also stand for "Dump Dan."  If you continue to ignore the state of the football program, you might give a call to the former AD at Nebraska.

Now for the unkindest cut of all.  Until you start doing your job, I must ask you to take your place with CTS and CHP.  I won't be able to use your name any more.  You are the Current Athletic Director, and nothing more.  So, CAD, how about some answers?
