Go Cheney Yourself Karl Dorrell

The Sleeping Beauty and his band of losers (and I will specifically include number 44 in this post) continue to disgrace UCLA:

Photo Credit: AP Photo/Kevork Djansezian (ESPN)

If the fraud had any dignity he would tender his resignation and clean out his office tomorrow. But we know he has no sense of accountability in his body. Otherwise, he would have taken responsibility a long time ago, enabling us to move on from the nightmare of last 4+ years.

I've got nothing else to say tonight.

We all feel numb at this point.

Oh and go Cheney yourself Karl.

GO BRUINS.

I Wanted To Not Turn Off
the TV in the event of a miracle.  Apparently, the Leprechaun worked its magic, overpowering whatever feeble efforts we managed to muster.

Well, this evening's debacle at the Rose Bowl served as another nail in KD's coffin.  I cannot see how Guerrero can find the reason to not sack his inept coach at the end of this season.

In a surreal season like this one
I wouldn't be surprised if KD pulls a Lavin and UCLA beats Cal in 2 weeks.

DG, please end this misery.

Oh, and speaking of Lavin, maybe he should visit SUC football practice more often!

Dorrell
Has destroyed UCLA football so much to the point we can't even enjoy an epic Trojan choke job. That's pretty much tell all you need to know about perhaps the worst head coach to coach football at any level in America.

SC probably saved Dorell's job...
...by proving that anyone can be upset by a shitty team. Frankly, I think they lost the Stanford game on purpose!

trOJan choke
as bad as tonight turned out for us, that choke was one thing that could at least bring together the two fan bases.

News of the impending upset actually opened up an avenue of discussion with a couple of Irish fans sitting behind me at the bar. Friendly folks actually, befiting the reports of last year's visitors to South Bend. We spent most of the 4th quarter discussing the problems that ND is facing, some comparing Willingham with Dorrell, the general mutial respect that we have for out respective schools and programs.

The one thing that the ND fan did bring up several times was Bruce Davis's trashing of ND, especially the O-line from earlier this week. He was rather pissed about that, but was able to seperate that from his overall feelings about UCLA.

Not all of them...
Some ND guy emptied a beer can on my buddy's back before the game.  Classy stuff.

Worst coach at any level
It's over, we stunk, it was predictable.  What to do now.  I can't see DG spending real money.  How about Tom Cable?  The only time I enjoyed Sleeping Beauty's offense was when he ran it.  He is doing a great job in Oakland.  Let's put him on the list.

Only Dalis would buy it
Should KD somehow pull a Lavin, and upset Cal.  In my book, even if he beats Trojans again, he still needs to go.  Our program needs authentic coaching, assistants skilled at developing players, devise game strategies that maximizes the player talents etc.

KD is clearly not in charge simply because he does not have it in him to be in charge, from what we saw on national TV.  Olson's injury is not the excuse at all.  Our team simply was not up for the occasion, whatever the cause.  Only some players on the defensive team went at it valiantly.  Overall Rose Bowl fans saw a listless, lackadaisical team giving the game away as soon as Olson went down.  Just sad.

I thought when Lavin left Pauley, UCLA would never have to suffer another day when its team crumbled in such embarassing fashion, basketball or otherwise.  Apparently, this afternoon in Pasadena, somebody cast that horrific, Lavinesque
spell on our football players, leaving them utterly spent, demoralized.  All the fingers can only be pointing at some direction, Karl Dorell's.

Guerrero is the ONE who is the DISGRACE!
Everything Dan Guerrero has done with Howland, he has destroyed with Dorrell.  You can't blame the Team, even awful Olson.  And you can't even blame Dorrell.  They are all playing to the level they can with what limited talents and leadership they have.  Guerrero refuses to pull the plug on Dorrell and this is all Guerrero's FAULT.  I'd fired Guerrero first, then Dorrell.  And don't give me that "Hiring Dorrell was not Dan Guerrero's decision."  Guerrero continues to keep Dorrell and THAT is his DECISION.

DUMP GUERRERO!

by BillM85Legacy on Oct 6, 2007 9:55 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Let's try rationality
#1 Guerrero couldn't have fired KD. He won 10 games 2 years ago and beat SC last year. Even if he wanted KD gone,, he couldn't have gotten it past the Regents or President and got them to okay buying out KD's contract then paying a new coach after that. #2 Guerrero didn't want KD in the first place. #3 Saying that this ruins everything he has done with the rest of the sports is ridiculous because he brought in Howland, Savage, Salcedo and others.

Guerrero hasn't had a chance to put his stamp on the football program yet. He didn't get to hire his guy and hasn't had a chance to fire KD, however if KD is around next season then we have to start looking at Guerrero.

Sorry Rye But It Is On DG
he could have and should have fired KD after the Nut Bowl.

He should have fired him after Utah.

One game does not make a season. You CAN fire a coach who has beaten SC. (Toledo owned sc)

The key is the body or work and KD's sucks.

You said we couldn't fire KD  because we would lose our verbal comitts. Most of us disagreed.

Now, the only way to save those commits is to fire him, now, and promise a replacement with a great coach.

Finally, don't assume you know what the Chancellor or the Regents will do. If they are fans, and know anything about the game, they will get rid of him.

As I have written, over and over, we don't tolerate these failures anywhere else in the UC system and should not tolerate them on the playing field.

This is totally on DG. He has the responsibility for the program and should stand up and protect it.

He will be in my crosshairs
if KD is still the coach after this season. It shows a complete lack of commitment to the football program. I was on the fence as to whether firing him n ow or at the end of the season is better, but the more I see us play, the more I am convinced that even an interim head coach would do better than KD. Fire his ass now and be done with it.

So who's getting thrown under the bus tonight?
Ben Olson for going down?
The Law firm for playing like a walk on?

We were cheering louder at the end of the SC game than at any point during the UCLA game, except for when Cowan broke for that TD that was of course called back for a penalty.  It was a sad sad day in this Bruin household.

. . . the long(er) drive back to San Diego after not merely a Bruin loss but a disgraceful showing.  Sure glad for the early week trash talk, boys!  Thanks, Coach, for making damn sure that the back up quarterback was ready in an instant to go.  Thanks for having a guy who'd never thrown a Div 1A pass have to toss it 28 times.  He didn't do half bad under the circs.  Thanks for not thinking to run a double tight end set and pound the ball on ND after losing the Great White Glass Jawed Mormon Hope- AGAIN.  Above all, Coach, thanks for that revealing interview - blasted at us all from the Bowl Jumbo tron pre-game, where you told each of us present and not getting blasted in the parking lot that you believed you were "underpaid" and implying (Oh lordy) that it had something to do with being a person "of color."  No, Karl, if you are underpaid, it is because, first and foremost,  you're an awful head coach,  an equally horrific game day coach, and a worse judge of acceptable assistants.  You make zero effective adjustments at halftime.  And you are a charisma vortex - just too gosh darn dull to stay on anymore.  Go away, and take your retarded offense with you.

38 passes, 26 runs
UCLA threw the ball 38 times (28 by BT). If you take away the quarterback runs, UCLA ran the ball 26 times.

In most games, that could be OK, but Notre Dame had a horrible rushing defense and UCLA had its third-string quarterback.

Unacceptable.

by gilbert on Oct 6, 2007 10:01 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

28 passes by BT.
How is that possible? A guy who has never thrown a pass in a college game, a passing scheme that is arguably too complex for any college QB to master, a passing scheme that depends on split-second timing, and you have him throw 28 times against one of the worst rushing defenses in college football?

WTF?!!!

Twelve completions, four interceptions. When was the last time a UCLA quarterback threw four interceptions? And yet, that was perfectly predictable.

Dorrell has to go NOW. Any one of us could have called a better game. Any one of us would be a better interim coach. OK, so we don't know how to recuit, hire assistants or develop players, but how much of a difference would that make to the rest of this season?

Seriously. Any one of us would have done a better job on the sidelines today.

by Chandler on Oct 6, 2007 10:48 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I cna live with the short passes by BT.
In the 2nd quarter, they amde sense.  Short dump-offs and hitches, 5-7 yards each, allowed Bell and Moline to run the middle.

That's FINE.  Makes sense.  Don't push the walk-on.

But what's with all the 1st down, 20-yard pass plays in the second half?

Why not tell some weekend boxer coming out of a Westside gym, throwing him in the ring with Antonio Tarver, and telling him to keep trying to knock him out with one punch.

This baffles me.  You have to pull CTS' teeth to get the offense to call MORE downfield plays for BO, but you have BT throw repeatedly 20-30 yards on FIRST DOWN, when we're already BEHIND???

WTF am I missing here?

Oh yeah, a real head coach, that's what.

The slow death of UCLA Football
KD,

Single handedly you have destroyed a football program.  High school football players think of UCLA as an "after thought."  You are unable [and unwilling] to recruit blue-chip players in SoCal or nationally. The excuse of high academic standards is complete bullshit, if it were a problem then [I can't even believe it] CAL wouldn't be ranked #1 this week and have been highly competitive for the past few years.

Fire this f*ckhead tonight!!!!

It's those winless teams...
...you have to watch out for.

I don't know why everyone is dumping on Dorrell. After all, Notre Dame was due to win one. It was inevitable. Nothing Dorrell could have done.

And having a walk-on quarter back pass against the worst running defense in the country? All part of the plan. Have to give the guy some experience somehow.

And leaving Markey in the game last week to aggravate his toe injury after outcome was no loner in doubt? All part of the plan. The guy needed to be toughened up.

Seriously, I pray that this game is finally the end of the Dorrell era.

by Chandler on Oct 6, 2007 10:17 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Dorrell is done...
or at least he better be. I'm totally sick of this. I couldn't catch the second half (lucky for me), but my buddies from U of M, MSU, and UW all agree that he has got to go. We have way too much talent on this team to settle for this shit.  A few of my thoughts on the first half -
Ben Olson really sucks. He looks slow and confused. I don't know if it's a result of the offense, but aside from the occasional deep throw (last week vs osu), the only time he looks comfortable is with that quick slant.  He has no sense of pressure in the pocket... what the hell was he doing on that fumble. Sucks that he got hurt, but i've realized he is definitely not the answer. KD should take him along when he leaves westwood.
The D is solid... I like their intensity. Even if you give a team as bad as ND chances in your own end, they're gonna get points. If i was on the defense, I would be pissed.
This walk on kid is a joke. There's gotta be some guys playing in the IM leagues around campus that can show more composure than him.  And yes, why didn't we just run down their throats all game and play field position for our D...
Well that's all. Glad I didn't see the second half.
At least our soccer team will have a good run as they usually do.
go bruins.

Back in the 60s..
Here is an interesting fact:

..Bobby Grich (late of the Angels) went to UCLA and was a member of Sigma Nu. He played IM tailback for them and, when they were taking apart my house (Lambda Chi) in the IM football finals, Tommy Prothro stopped by to look at the game. After it was over, he had a long conversation with Grich essentially offering him yet another scholarship to play QB for UCLA; Tommy was low on QBs that year. Never worked out, but just goes to show you that good coaches never stop looking. Fouts mentioned that there are a couple of red shirt freshmen who could have been put into to service before last night's game. Fouts also mentioned the forehead rash that McLeod had -- stating that it was typical of spring ball and goes away after players got some snaps.

So, with his first two QBs sharing three bad knees and a concussion between them, the genius has this poor walk-on watching when he should have been preparing..

..also, don't give me this injury crapola. One coach used to say that a good program includes conditioning that precludes much of that. If you see folks going down a lot, then their strength program is to blame and that is under the head coach's domain.

Just wish the AD hadn't gone bargain hunting for minimum-wage candidates when they choose a football coach for one of the bigger FB programs in the country.

Sentiment from South Bend
So frustrated right now, not one die hard fan at ND ever imagined that they could upset UCLA, luck of the Irish and all. KD needs to go, and as one post said it right, if DG doesn't get it, then we must question his judgment as well.

Whew!!!!
Ooops, I hadn't checked the final on the LSU game.  A quality team in Red Stick (Baton Rouge), LA.  Nothing like what we have in Westwood.  One team that faced a serious challenge and rose to the occasion and another who wilted under the pressure.  Actually a coaching staff that wilted.

Why did we only have a walk-on QB to go to?  Where is the red-shirt freshman?  Or was he worst than the walk-on?  My gawd!!!  Obviously, a quality QB hasn't been recruited.  Another example of KD's inability to recruit.

So, with the lead and your walk-on QB at the helm did UCLA take advantage of its strength?  Did UCLA take advantage of ND's defensive weakness? A heavy and consistent dose of the running game runs time off the clock and protects the ball.  Instead, we throw, albeit to get back into a game after the walk-on [predictably] made turnover after turnover in key situations.  KD and his staff are f*cking idiots.

I don't blame the walk-on, he performed as expected.  He should've only been asked to hand the ball off.

Oh, and since LSU pulled it out CAL will only rise to number 2  thankfully.

This has got to be the end of DUH-rell
"We're snakebit" - what, it's just fate?  DUH-rell is the most incompetent moron on the face of the Earth.  4th and 1, you've got Kahlil Bell, you've got Shane "The Train" Moline, so what do you do - put it in the hands of your freshman walk-on QB by calling a pass.  Fucking brilliant.

BO could be a good quarterback, but not in the BS WCO DUH-rell is trying to run.  He is not a WCO QB.

Who designed the blocking scheme on the play Olson got hurt?  #9 had a straight shot on him, completely unblocked.  Another example of DUH-rell's incompetence being an actual physical danger to the UCLA players (Markey being another example).

When is somebody at UCLA going to pull their head out of their ass and fire this loser?

Notre Dame was as bad as advertised
But we were worse. I give props to the D, and to every Bruin player who really tried. I feel sorry for B-T, and I even feel a little sorry for KD. Both were placed in situations for which they were not prepared. But Dorrell has had plenty of time to master his position, and he can't do it. The injury to BO doesn't come close to excusing what we saw tonight. This is the first time I have left a Bruin game early, but I just couldn't take it any more. We may come back and win some games. I hope we do. But if we do, one thing is clear: it won't be due to coaching.

Embarrassing
I can accept the fact that they lost as I don't think anyone thought they would go undefeated.  But to lose to Notre Dame, the laughingstock of college football?  Just ridiculous.  It makes the USC choke job look better by comparison (even though I thought Notre Dame was better than Stanford).  I just can't describe how angry and embarrassed I am right now.

I think going in everyone would agree that the only way that Notre Dame could win was if their defense scored all their points.  So as a coaching staff, wouldn't you have a gameplan to reduce the amount of errors your offense could potentially make?  I would think so, but maybe that's "thinking outside the box" for KD and his merry men.

Think of this year as chemotherapy -- we have to take some losses to get rid of the disease.  How many losses guarantee KD's firing?  Is 4 enough or do they need more?

by schlom on Oct 6, 2007 11:29 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Losses - 4 is pushing it, imo
Personally, the way this season was set up for us, 8-4 is more than sufficient for dorrell to get his fucking ass shoved out the morgan center door. However, I don't quite know if I can trust Guererro and the rest of the folks in the AD with that.

7-5 has to be an automatic sacking [by this I mean a couple of disqusted former (large) players are sent to physically throw Dorrell into a large burlap sack and dragged out of his morgan center office and put into a waiting cab to LAX]. I'm starting to get the same feeling that I had when the Lavinoma ruined my winter of 2002-03 - this is going to be an ugly stretch, but the ultimate end in sight.

2 Losses is Enough
when they are to Utah and ND.

These are games we should have won. If you can't coach a team to victories in these games, you can't coach.

So far, we've looked shitty in our wins. Can't forget that either.

If we run the table, which we won't, someone will have to explain how we beat Cal and sc and lost to Utah and ND.

The idea is to win ALL of our games -- losing to teams we should beat is enough to get him fired.

by Class of 66 on Oct 7, 2007 7:06 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed that that is how it should be
but also looking toward the deluded folks that are still backing dorrell as much as ever, with the chance that some such people may have an ear where it matters.

One problem: even an 8-4 record would mean going 7-2 in conference. If those went to Cal and suc, and those teams win out (and to to the BCS), that sets up a likely holiday bowl bid. We would then hear talk of how dorrell 'turned around the season', that you can't fire the coach after the best season since '98 (based on conf. finish and bowl bid) and all other manner of bullshit.

now, the idea that the Bruins team that we have seen play the past several weeks could beat Cal, suc, or even Oregon sounds quite funny. If not for my memories of Dirk Koetter's November choke jobs @ ASU, I would have that racked up as a loss as well (even with Erickson coaching them, I have to see that team win late before I can believe they can do it).

Factor in road trips to Arizona and WSU, on of which dorrell will surely lose, the best I see this season ending is 7-5, which is probably optimistic given the current strength of the remaining schedule. Right now, given tis team's current play and coaching, I am realistically thinking 6-6 [losses to Cal, suc, @WSU or @UA, ASU or Oregon].

by bruinhoo on Oct 7, 2007 8:23 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Depending on Ben Olson's status
we may be hard pressed to do better than 4-8.

I really don't see any gimme games left on our schedule (ND was supposedly the only one left).

Then again, Dorrell is THE LUCKIEST BASTARD in the world, so 2 weeks from now DeSean Jackson will probably cough up the ball 6 times and Dorrell will have his Lavin moment against #2 ranked Cal.

Could be
As opposed to some of the preseason talk of UCLA being favored in all games until sc, I could see this team being the underdog through the rest of the season.

While I have that same fear re. dorrell pulling a lavin, I just don't think the team has the level of talent that lavin's pre-2003 teams had to save his ass, or even that of the 2005 team with MJD, plus Lewis and Drew Olson to a lesser extent (Breazell seems to be our only playmaker now).

I do think that the team will win one of the remaining road games, and will pull out a home win against ASU or Oregon, because dorrell does tend to win at least 1 game that he should not win, at the Rose Bowl.

by bruinhoo on Oct 7, 2007 8:58 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Start at the top
Danny Guerrero needs to be held accountable for his total inability to manage a football program; UCLA had the chance to hire a better AD (and, having gone to school with both of them, a MUCH better man!) in Gene Bleymaier, but passed because...well, the story at the time was that Gene was too much of a 'football guy'; that's a real problem, right?  Look what he's done at Boise State - terrible stuff, huh? And Dan...well, Dan had all that fabulous UC Irvine football success under his belt, right? An earlier poster claims that Dan hasn't had the chance to put his 'stamp' on the football program yet...PLEASE!
What I really felt great about tonight at the Rose Bowl was seeing all the UCLA football alumni roaming around having to watch what's become of their beloved program.  And what a fine game to invite all the recruits to see!
Really, it's just like being at Dodger Stadium...tons of fans keep showing up, keep screaming their heads off in support of a program they love, and the 'powers that be' keep delivering NOTHING to all these dedicated fans...love that 'thanks for coming' announcement at the end of the game, along with the 'guess the attendance' game on the big screen...happy to know that ticket sales never seem to suffer amidst the ongoing travesty that is Bruin football.
All of us deserve better.  Start with Guerrero (send him back to the Beta house where he started out), follow his firing with Dorrel's, finish up with all the coaches except for Walker and Kezirian, and send Ben back to Salt Lake City where he belongs - what a circus!  Enough already.

The KD era is (should be ) over
ND 2007.....One of THE worst IA teams ever, and one of THE worst ever against a decent running attack. Your #1 QB goes down early. Your only option is a walk on who has never thrown a pass. What ever your gameplan was to this point(and if it wasn't to run it then why the H____Not?), you RUN the freekin football!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Run it left, run it right, run it up the middle , run again, run it, tell your O Line and running backs, "We're going to do ONE thing well tonight boys, RUN THE FOOTBALL. And when you're tired of running it, guess what....we're going to RUN it AGAIN!!!!!!"

Which didn't happen and is the only explanation needed to explain why Mr. KD should back his bags tonight!

The ONLY good thing I can say about last night was I got to hang out again with the great guys in my section (1L, row 18). Good bunch of guys. I'm happy I got my seats moved up from last year.

I want to go on the record, here and now, that I am joining the Dump Dorrell group. He's had a fair shot, but if you can't improve the program in five years, you need to be replaced. It's as simple as that.

The Worst Loss Ever Witnessed
I was in the Rose Bowl in 1988 when Wash St. ended our #1 ranking (no excuse that day but at least Wash St was ranked, had the #1 rated NCAA passer and an explosive offense).  I was there in 1990 when UCLA lost the Marijuanavich Shoot-out in the Rose Bowl (a game I hated to lose but a game for the ages).  But I don't think I could've taken being there tonight.  KD is such a fucking moron. There was no way UCLA could/should have lost this game except to hand it to ND and THAT my fellow Bruins is exactly what DUH-rell did.  I'm apoplectic.

Make a change at head coach
and get someone who can develop players. I hate to use suc as an example, but look at Carson Palmer. Big, lumbering loser of a qb, overrated out of HS, and then carol comes in and he's a Heisman winner. Someone needs to motivate BO in the same way. Fire the fool and get anyone who actually shows a pulse to coach.

Are we getting worse every year?
Or is it my imagination?

Every year, Dorrell has gotten better players and every year he's gotten his so-called offense more established and every year our record has stagnated or gotten worse. Can you imagine what this team would be doing if they still had the normal offense Bob Toledo left us with?

It's Sunday Morning And I Don't Feel Any Better

Just the most down-trodden, low feeling after the utter abomination last night.  I know and understand that there's a lot more balance and parity in college football than what there used to be but last night was just simply horrifying.  I realize it's probably unrealistic to expect DG to can KD in the midst of the season but DG has to pull the trigger after Dec.1 and put an end to this B.S.

I think there are some qualified candidates out there who would love the UCLA job; just who for sure I don't know.  I, personally, don't to excited at the prospect of Neuheisel; a lot of skeletons in the closet there......

by Minnesota Bruinfan on Oct 7, 2007 8:22 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

"New" heisel...
First of all, you have to wonder how much better BO would have performed the past two seasons with Neuheisel as his coach  (I'm thinking of Aikman and I realize that BO is no Troy Aikman...but he might have been).

Moreover, as to the skeletons, well, I'd like to believe that Rick learned from the scrapes at CO and UW.  In any event, he would be one hell of an improvement to KD, and his ability to recruit has been borne out.

Neuheisel has never been embarrassed on the football field the way that Dorrell has been - on an all too often basis.  Success will come to this program only if DG can find the $ (and this means help from some big time boosters) to hire a prime time head coach AND the best complement of assistant coaches that we can afford.

Just get Dorrell out now.

UCLA - the finest public university in the world

by SecondGenBruin on Oct 7, 2007 8:39 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

My question on Neuheisel
He would certainly be better than KD, but he left both washington and colorado worse off than when he got them. He didn't improve the programs. he had a couple of good years, and then things fell apart in both programs.

I am not sold on him at all. I would prefer someone who has actually built a program from the ground up, because that is what we need. Even if its a guy from a small conference.

don't know why you are down on the defense
they did their job. It was that fucking Karl Dorrell offense that killed us yet again.

Why do you suddenly decide to open up the playbook when your third string walk on QB comes in with no game experience? Why do you pass over 60% of his plays? Against a team that can't score? and against one of the worst rushing defenses in the country?

Remember, this is the same QB they wouldn't let throw the ball when we were up by 14 in garbage time unless he "made a mistake". KD is a fuckign clown.

It was fucking comical it was so stupid.

Why all the hate?
I'm not a UCLA fan so I'm don't follow this team as closely as you guys do.  Why the heavy anti-Dorrell bias?  He's 33-23, and will UCLA will go to their 5th consecutive bowl game this year.  He's no superstar, but he's not terrible.  Are your expectations realistic?  UCLA hasn't been a powerhouse for decades now, I personally felt that Bruin football died under Edgerrin James cleats when Miami humiliated the UCLA defense down in the Orange Bowl with McNown at QB.

Yeah the performance against ND was disgusting, you lost to a team that generated 140 yards of total offense, but you were down to essentially your 3rd string QB.  When that happens, you lose.

I just don't see the window of opportunity for UCLA right now, honestly unless you can drive Carroll back to the NFL along with Tedford, I'm not sure there is a coach you guys would be willing to hire($-wise) that would carry you to Rose Bowls etc.

Anyways.. just wondering.

He said he's not a UCLA fan
he obviously hasn't seen all the evidence we have as to why KD has to go so he came here and asked why. There's nothing wrong with that. I understand we're all a little high strung after that embarrassment last night, but there is no need to chew someones head off.

by Ryan Rosenblatt on Oct 7, 2007 10:01 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well
Then don't hop on another team's message board and make inane statements about the team or coach.  When a coach is bad, and somebody comes around and states otherwise for no apparent reason, and without any basis in fact, they reap what they sow.

And I'm not high-strung about anything.  I want this team to lose and fire the coach.  I'm rooting for this.

by Sweetbreads Bailey on Oct 7, 2007 10:05 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly
It would be one thing to have another team's fan be critical of feelings re. dorrell in a different setting, such as randomly talking in a bar during or after a game, or coworkers etc.

For someone to take the time to come onto a blog or message board, apparently making no effort to understand the facts of UCLA under dorrell, nor the climate of the forum, and try to tell the community that they are wrong is asking to get called out.

by bruinhoo on Oct 7, 2007 12:07 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I didn't say Dorrell was a good coach.
Where did I tell you guys you were wrong? I'm just looking for why you guys despise Dorrell with such a passion.  I know bad coaches/coaching.

I grew up a UNC football fan and had to deal with Carl Torbush/John Bunting for nearly 10 years.

I attended Penn State from 2000-2004 during the worst run in PSU history(1 bowl game, 4 losing seasons).

I'm looking for concrete reasons behind why you think he's terrible.  For example,

I think Ron Zook is one of the worst in-game tactician's running a major college program today.

Other than when he had Vince Young(no gameplan or playcalling skill necessary), Mack Brown is one of the most inept head coaches for preparing an offensive game plan for a big game and making the risky decisions necessary to win those big games going back to his time at UNC.

I don't mind having my head bitten off, you just lost to a team with no functional offense.  That blows, I was in the Stadium when Penn State lost to Iowa 6-4, in the worst football game in college football history.  I'd be mad too.

Anyway, feel free to reply or ban me if you wish.

by displacedfan on Oct 7, 2007 12:55 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Allow me to respond.
displacedfan -- As you can tell, things are pretty tense around right here.

We have often had many people ask "Why the hate?" and dismiss the contributors and frequent visitors of this board as being "haters" of our team, with the implication including that we want our team to lose (which we do NOT), that we are racist (which we certainly are NOT), and that we demand BCS chmapionshisp every year (which would be nice, but who are we kidding?).

As for a simple statement of our reasons, welll, here's the 12/27/06 version of the list (with thanks to the folks at www.DumpDorrell.com ):

Reasons To Dump Dorrell (12/27/06 version)

  1.  1-3 against Southern Cal.
  2.  No Pac-10 championships.
  3.  No BCS bowl games.
  4.  1-10 on the road against teams with a winning record.
  5.  Worst starting 3- AND 4- year record of any UCLA football coach since WW2, including Bob Toledo who was fired.
  6.  Worse winning percentage than Bob Toledo, who was fired.
  7.  3-11 against ranked teams.
  8.  2-7 against top 10 teams.
  9.  Only 6 conference wins against teams who finished over .500.
  10.  19-14 against Pac-10 teams.
  11.  8-17 against teams with a winning record.
10 losses to unranked teams.
12.  He has a losing record after October, 6-12.
Embarrassing losses to Wyoming, Fresno State, Arizona, Southern Cal.
  1.  Revolving door for assistant coaches.
  2.  80% of Bruins fans polled on Bruinsnation.com disapprove of the job KD is doing.
OK, the last one is a bit self-serving, true.  But factor in that this team has also lost FIVE games in the last 2 years in which we held the halftime lead (including the Emerald Bowl AND last night's trainwreck), plus the befuddling, embarassing performance of CTS (i.e. Coach Toeldo's successor) with the local media this year, and I assume you can see why we're so unhappy with the football program.

We don't owe you anything
If you'd like to look at the hundreds of posts we have had on here, clearly demonstrating Dorrell's inexperience, lack of football knowledge, pathetic communication skills, inept recruiting, and inexistent in-game coaching, you are free to use the search function. You think Mack Brown is inept? Have you seen his record? I would kill for that record at UCLA!

The reason we despise Dorrell is not really for all those things though. If that was it, we'd just want him fired. The reason we despise him is for his lack of humility, his complete disdain for players' careers, his tendency to throw players under the bus and his utter unwillingness to ever take the blame for anything that goes wrong.

The stringness of the QB
is not an excuse.  (Or is it stringinity?  Who cares.)

A few years ago, a walk-on fifth string QB named John Barnes showed the world what a well-coached team could do.  (The coach in that game was Terry Donahue.  Compared to the incumbent, he was the best coach who ever lived.)

And if you check deep enough, you'll see I'm right.  Barnes was fifth string (counting Maddox who went to the NFL.)

Before Pete Carroll took over at USC
They hadn't been a powerhouse for a while either.  Before Tedford took over at Cal they were crap.  Before Urban Meyer took over at Utah they hadn't done much for a long time.  Now that he's gone they're back where they were before.  What was South Florida before Jim Leavitt?  What had Oklahoma been before they hired Bob Stoops?

If Toledo had actually been replaced with a good coach there would be no justification for saying, "Bruin football died under Edgerrin James cleats when Miami humiliated the UCLA defense down in the Orange Bowl with McNown at QB." Toledo's chances at accomplishing something died that day, not UCLA football.

Did KD really say this after the ND game?
IT IS WHAT IT IS

This statement has all the markings of a coach who really doesn't give a hoot about Bruin football fans out there who live and die with every game.

It is very consistent with his "I'm sleeping well at night" comment after the Utah loss.

Basically, he's saying -- I get my paycheck, win or lose...if you don't like it then go to hell.
