Guerrero Grades: Notre Dame

Bumped from the diaries. GO BRUINS. -N

This will be a bit obvious today, given yet another embarrassing loss to Notre Dame yesterday, but we will stick with it because we must be relentless until the outcome (Dorrell is fired) is secure.  For those who are new to DD or are coming back after a hiatus, we have been using Dan Guerrero's own words to assess Dorrell's performance during the season.  Here is what Guerrero said he expects this season:

"The important thing this year," Guerrero said, "is that we don't beat ourselves, that we play with consistency, that we're an excellent second half team and that we improve as the year progresses."

As we have posted all season and will continue to do, here is our assessment of Karl Dorrell's performance yesterday against Notre Dame with Guerrero's clear points of analysis in mind (obviously this won't be surprising):

  1.
  2. We don't beat ourselves.  Grade: F.  7 Turnovers, 11 penalties, 5 sacks, unfocused, outschemed, outcoached, outgamed, out-adjusted. Why we passed more than we ran when Notre Dame had one of the worst rush defenses in the country while at the same time we had a freshman walk-on QB who'd never thrown a pass is a question for the ages.  Other questions ... why did we have that same QB passing on 3rd and 6 from our 5 yard line??  Why did we have him passing on 4th and 1 when we had the lead and were in field goal position against a team that literally could do nothing on offense?? We're pretty sure that this game will be a case study in Football 101.
  3.
  4. Play with consistency.  Grade F.  As usual, there was consistency on the field yesterday, horrible play-calling, horrible game strategy, horrible adjustments on offense.  No intensity, no fire, no enthusiasm ... and we were at home!  The defense played well, but this was an offense that had scored all of 6 TDs all season!
  5.
  6. Excellent 2nd half team.  Grade F.  0 points in the second half.  What adjustments did Karl make??  Did he decide we needed to pass more with a freshman walk-on QB with no game passing experience when we had the lead against a team that couldn't move the ball at all?? We had the lead and gave up the ball 5 times on pass plays we didn't need to call.  The defense could have won this game, Notre Dame had barely 100 yards offense through 3 quarters.  Yet Dorrell decides to go for a 4th and 1 in field goal territory with a pass play for a freshman walk-on QB with no passing experience and with no one in the backfield and we were up by 3 already. WTF?
  7.
  8. Improve as year progresses. Grade F.  For all the Dorrell talk about how we are getting better, how we are "disciplining our resources," how he is the "added coach" and how Dorrell himself has "answered the bell," we now have lost to 2 horrible no-win teams in embarrassing fashion with too many turnovers and penalties.  Although it was obvious that Dorrell coached hard, we are actually getting worse ... which is no surprise but a reminder that talent gets wasted under Dorrell and that sadly recruits with any chance of going to the NFL will not develop and will lose a potentially great future for themselves and their families.  Did you not hear the bell Karl??
Fire away with your thoughts ...

I agree with the grades
What else could they be?

And by the way - I sent an e-mail to all the administrators and all the reporters on the list on your DD site.  The e-mails to the reporters were all basically the same, but I put some extra time in sending the stuff to the administration.  (I didn't send anything to Bob Field.  He's part of the problem.)

What happened to the F-
or even a G - DUH-rell is redefining what it means to be a failure as a head coach.

You guys still going to wait for the first conference loss?

Last night was just terrible.

yeah
this is a bit of a problem ... we really dont know what the best option is right now.  Dorrell can still win the conference and our campaign is built around him being out of the Pac-10 title hunt, again.  Obviously, he wont win out but we cant give his supporters the obvious legitimate retorts, squashing our campaign.  This is the one scenario we knew could hurt our plans .. losing 2 OOC games badly before losing a conference game.   Had the loss come against OSU we'd be pushing it hard right now.  But we have 2 weeks before Cal and we can't launch or it will fall on deaf ears. The media wont be as into it.

Could we launch with the anticipation that we will lose to Cal?? Yes ... but it wont pack the same punch.  Still, once we lose to Cal it will have truth to it, but the surprise will be gone.  That is the dilemma.  We have to make a decision by early tomorrow morning.  Your thoughts??

Don't wait
If there is even a one in a million chance that whatever you're planning will get him out sooner rather than later, then you owe it to yourself and the rest of us to launch whatever photon torpedos that you've got.

I agree with Fox
This season is over.

Yes, in a parallel universe, we might still win the Pac 10.

But it is not going to happen.  Our defense is terrific.  Our offense, from the coaches on down, is terrible.

This team just might lose every single game from here on out.

And, you know what?  If it gets Dorrell out of there, that's fine with me.

photon torpedoes... =p

Think of it this way.
With Stanford knocking off $C -- thus solidifying Cal fans for one week as tree-huggers -- it is still possible that a one-loss team can win the Pac-10 and get the automatic BCS slot.  Shoot, Cal SPLIT the title with $C last year at 2 Pac-10 losses apiece.

Considering that ASU, Cal, and we are still undefeated in conference, this is going to be dicey.

The way I see it, Utah was Strike 1.

Notre Dame is Strike 2.

Any Pac-10 loss, if not serving as Strike 3, is going to keep amounting to foul balls putting more pressure to CTS to step up to the plate and earn his salary.

Even if the mainstream, average fan is only NOW coming around to the problems with CTS' coaching the story can still easily be that CTS is finally, clearly, inescapably coming under VERY hard scrutiny.

Not from sports-talk guys.  Not from blissfully obsessive folks like us.  Not from rich alums.

But from regular fans.

If that's the angle present, then it should be played by someone.

OK, enough from me.

Simers comment
Simers had a good comment in the LAT this morning. Noting that KD said after the game, "it is what it is", and Simers said well, "he is what he is". Well said. As I said somewhere else, this social experiment must end now!!

ucla...
got 2 votes in the USA Today Poll, someone is obviously on crack

I disagree with the vote for 2.
Play with consistency.
I think we deserve at least a C, because for three games, we've played consistently HORRIBLE. Mind boggling how he does it week in and week out, but kd has managed to do it again. Someone noted that I'm getting wrinkles, right in the middle of the ND game. I'm in my early 20's, so the wrinkles I blame on our loser coach. He is the anti-joy.

I'll see your wrinkles
and raise you with some gray hair. And I am in my mid 20's. Thanks dorrell!

Sergeant Buzz Kill
Every Saturday, he's the dreamkiller, the bringer of the pain, he's made Saturday into the cruelest day of the week for all UCLA fans.  Get rid of DUH-rell, give us our joy back.
