Dohn's Report Card

Bumped per request. This post went up during last weekend before we discovered this kind of fact based analysis was ya know racist! GO BRUINS. -N

Bumped from the diaries. GO BRUINS. -N

Brian Dohn posts a report card after each game and I was curious as to how the team was doing using Dohn's own grading assessments.

Following our loss to UA, I posted the following in response to Dohn's report card entry in his blog:

Brian, I've computed the current GPA of the Coaching and Overall grades you've assigned so far this year. Coaching GPA is at 1.8 (weak C, almost C-) and the Overall at 1.67 (solid C-). My guess is that the next few report cards will be pretty much the same, so the season ending GPA won't be much different than it is now. In the unlikely event that the team aces the next three conference games and a bowl game, the best GPA attainable would be 2.50 (C+) and 2.38 (barely C+). Based upon your own rating, does this merit another year for Dorrell and his staff? I believe your position is that Dorrell should be given a full six years to prove himself. However, one would expect to see improvement year to year that provides confidence that the program is heading in the right direction. This year had the potential to showcase that with all of the returning players and seniors. However, it only showcased the trademark inconsistency of the past five years. Do you feel the same way regarding giving Dorrell the full six years, even while your own rating shows him to be mediocre at best? I didn't get a response, so I posted it again in response to his "My Take" blog entry, in case he had stopped reading responses from the original report card thread. Again I got no response.

Below are my calculations updated with Dohn's grades after our close loss to ASU. It includes best-case calculations if we were to somehow ace the last two Pac-10 and potential bowl games. The first two grade columns contain the numeric and letter Coaching and Overall grades from Dohn's blog for each game. The next two grade columns show the running GPA and letter grade after each game.

With the latest grades from the ASU game, the best attainable Coaching GPA is C+, while the overall GPA is nearly C+. It is extremely doubtful the last set of grades would be A's, therefore the average GPAs simply become strong C's or less. Wow, nearly a million $$ for average performance. What a gig.

One wonders why Dohn didn't comment on what his own analysis shows. Or perhaps it's obvious that he isn't able to explain away the inconsistency of his position wrt KD's future and his own assessment of KD's performance.

Update [2007-11-20 17:30:31 by Grok451]:
I made some corrections to my original post and replaced the grading scale with input received. The new grading scale has the effect of adding a few tenths to the numeric grades and the overall GPA calculations, but doesn't really change any of the conclusions. I'll post updates to the calculations after the remaining games are played.

Update [2007-11-26 20:22:57 by Grok451]: Corrected ASU letter grade to B- (was originally incorrectly listed as C-).
