Best Head Coach Candidate Yet..

here is a name im just going to throw out there:

Andy Reid

now i know this is an extreme stretch and dont count on it happening, but is it really such a bad idea for Andy Reid? He was born in LA, went to John Marshall High School, played at BYU and coached at the College of the Canyons, San Francisco State and Northern Arizona during his career, so I think it is safe to say he is familiar with the West Coast.

Also its no secret Reid is having family problems, and going from basically running a NFL organization to coaching a NCAA football team should give him some time to get his kids in order.

UCLA football needs a change of attitude. And there may be no one better than Andy Reid to do this. The team needs a coach who is going to come in there and hard ass the guys to gain a championship mentality. The last thing UCLA needs is a crook like Neuheisel to bring a coom-bye-ya attitude to this team. The players needs someone who is going to punch them in the mouth and whip them into playing shape. He is also great at grooming quarterbacks (McNabb and Favre among others).

DGuerrero needs to take a bold step here and sign a high powered football coach to put this team on the map. money shouldnt be a problem, considering the RICH history of alumni at UCLA. It would be a nice way for DG to make up for past coaching mistakes and fandom angst. It would be like saying, "I know Dorrell was a mistake, so here is how I'll make it up to you" to the fans, alumni and program in general.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

Reid
He is also a friend of Ben Olson and his family.

Short answer
No.

Long answer - No, no, no, no, no.

We don't need a coach who takes the job so that he can have more time to deal with his "family problems."  Hey - here's an idea!  We can hire Britney Spears.  She can probably recruit well, and anyway, she would have time to deal with her family problems.

And even if Reid didn't have family problems, the answer to your question would be NO.

Andy Reid at UCLA?  Come on.

Qualified for the position
there is no doubt about that.  Talking about a coach that has been to a SB and has 2 (I think) Coach of the Year honors.

I don't think he will be a viable option however because I dont think that we will be able to afford him.  My guess is that he is in the neighborhood of $3 mil per year.  My bet is IF he even leaves or is fired this year - a 15 year vet of the NFL that would most assuredly be courted by other NFL teams in need would not take a step down in pay...

Not to mention
that the timelines will be off as there would probably be a delay in any decision (again IF he will even be in the position to be ousted) on Reid status and the NFL season doesn't end till Dec 30th.

by gorams77 on Nov 5, 2007 9:17 PM PST up reply actions

i can wait
until Dec. 30 for any decision. i mean we all know whats coming anyways. i just think since the Eagles are clearly starting to go a different direction these , Reid may want to get out of there and move on as well to a less demanding job.

No
WCO disciple and he is a pro's pro type of coach.  I think he is a very good coach but he is not a college type of coach.  I doubt he would come to UCLA anyways.

by BlueReign on Nov 5, 2007 10:18 PM PST reply actions

yes
the college game is changing to a "think pass first" offense and Andy Reid is perfect for that. he has always been accused of passing too much. in the NFL that might not be the best option but in college it clearly is becoming the trend.

a knock on him might be the fact that he has only been a head coach at one organization and never in college, but he has been around the college game for a large part of his career and can turn any offensive line around.

also it wouldnt be the first time a Los Angeles university football team hired a big name NFL coach, who has experienced success, to turn their program around.

Well, I'm glad..
..that DG feels that we have the time to sit on the pot re: looking for a new ball coach. With TAMU and Nebraska making moves already and the limited options that are available, this is a fine example of just how much football means to DG and UCLA. Screw protocol and screw loyalty. UCLA has never been a great school as far as loyalty to alumni and legacies as it is (Just ask Marc Tyler), why start by trying to show some loyalty toward this wanna-be coach!?!? We can not afford to wait and see just how "interesting" the rest of this season gets, we need to make a move NOW!!!!!!!

This hack of a coach has already cost two qb's major injuries because he just doesn't know any better nor does he care. With an o-line that sucks as bad as ours and no help with the blocking assignments from the backs, you need a mobile QB back there. Rather than throwing the big red tree and an injured Cowan to the wolves, get somebody who can move around!! Run the wing-t for all I care, but with the injuries that we've suffered and the ineffectiveness of the offense, you need to make a change instead of hoping it works this week. This lack of planning, preparation and lack of football acumen has been the ubiquitous glaring weakness exhibited by this hack of a coach and we're going to wait and see how the season plays out. Awesome. Well F U too DG.

Yeah, my season ticket money and limited booster donations don't add up to much in the big scheme, I'm sure; but that man is the reason you haven't seen money for either from me since his hiring. I have a weakness for this team, I'll admit and couldn't help but buy tickets for a few games each year, but I refuse to contribute fully until he is out of here. That, to me, is saying alot. My family has been season ticket holders since the early '60's. I, myself, have been a season ticket holder since 1980 (I miss my section 2 seats).  I couldn't do it anymore, I just couldn't contribute to  this mess any further; and now we're going to wait and see!! To hell with loyalty to the coach! How about some loyalty to the fans, the alumni and the players!! Get off your butt and get a coach!

What are you going to lose!?!?! We're already losing games! We're already losing recruits!! Respectability and the opportunity for football to hold it's head high went out the window LOOOOONGG AGO! Now you want to sit around and lose out on options for coaches!?!?!? I can count on 1 hand the number of times I could actually say I was proud of Bruin football since KD took over and I would still have 1 finger left to let DG and Radio know what I think.

  MAKE A MOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is money the issue??? Is that it?? Let me help you out; I guarantee this guy will work for a portion of KD's salary and have amazing results:

Perry Jehlicka

Perry whata???

Yeah I know, but check him out, just took over at Antelope Valley College. Inherited a team with a 26 game losing streak. Guess what? They're undefeated, Foothill Conference champs! Ranked top 25 nationally! The talent has not changed there. Trust me, this team is in my neck of the woods and there was no great infusion of talent. Take a look at Perry Jehlicka's resume. He turns crap programs around and the great thing is he has a focus on defense!

Go ahead DG, sit on the pot. Try and see what coach you can steal away from God knows where for lottery tickets and bazooka gum wrappers, be my guest. You're going to end up wishing you had made a move and say to yourself "Damn, TAMU/Nebraska got themselves a coach. Wish I had moved quicker".

Andy Reid? Nice guy... but no way!
Though I DO think Reid is a good coach and all, with a Super Bowl under his belt, AND his ties to L.A. etc.etc. None of those are reasons he should be considered for the job. Plus, I'm sure he's just finished making an argument to Eagles management that he's still fit for the Philly job.

But as one other alum just mentioned, him coming to L.A. and having a more 'lax' job at Ucla (arguably so, given all the work that needs to be done in the football program) isn't what it's all about. Reid needs to take care of business at home before he goes anywhere else. Plus, it looks like he's keeping his job in Philly. Just because he's from L.A. doesn't make him qualified to coach Bruin football. Bringing in a guy for the reasons you mentioned is why our program is suffering so badly in the first place.

PLUS, if he can't control his two adolescent-like sons at home, how's he going to handle an entire football squad that has maturity problems of its own (as in, they can't motivate themselves to win 'easy' games).  Coaching a pro team is very different from coaching any college team.... it works for some but not for others... If you've been semi-successful in the pros, you likely will have a harder time adjusting to college kids. Bill Walsh tried returning to Stanford after his Niners' gig and didn't do all that well... on the other hand, good college coaches sometimes don't make good pro coaches (Pete Carroll, Steve Spurrier, and Lou Holtz, to name a few).

Andy Reid at Ucla? No. We can do much, much better.

Reid
I agree that he is a good coach, but I would reject him if he were ever a candidate on the grounds that he so mismanaged the clock at the end of the Super Bowl loss to the Patriots that we would be essentially guaranteeing an epic choke if we ever made it to the national title game.

Clock management for Philly at the end of the first half and in the last five minutes was so unbelievably bad that even the MSM noticed it:

No way should Reid be taken seriously after such a debacle.

Chris Petersen at BSU for me.
Reid's got WAY too much stuff he has to deal with for his family right now.

Get me Petersen.

Would he be able to recruit?
I can't see parents wanting their children to play for a man whose children have had problems with drugs.
