Around SBN: Tobias Harris signs with Tennessee

To the Lizard of Westwood: Take THAT

Maybe in about 3-4 years we can expect the same lines from MJD, the other Davis, or other guys who wasted their careers going coachless during last 4+ years at Spaulding. GO BRUINS.-N

It's always nice to remember those who came before us.

From Jerry Crowe's column in today's LAT:

"As reported by Bay Area blogger Geoff Lepper of the Contra Costa Times, former UCLA point guard Baron Davis looked into the rafters at Pauley Pavilion last Friday during the Golden State Warriors' morning shoot-around and said, "We should have a banner up there: the only team to make the tournament without a coach." . . .

Somewhere, surely, Steve Lavin's ears were burning."

Tell me that Baron Davis is not your very favorite NBA player right this second.  Go on, just tell me he's not.

GO BRUINS.

Hello Bruce Davis
May be someday you will say to some reporters how you were winning some games without a coach.

I HEART BARON!

by bluestreet on Nov 8, 2007 7:40 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Wait a minute.
Bruce did say something to that effect in this last Sunday's Daily Breeze when he said that even if Mickey Mouse was the coach, it wouldn't be Mickey's fault because Mickey isn't the one on the field.

It led me to believe that Davis doesn't know the difference between good and bad coaching, which means he's probably never had good coaching. Only Mickey Mouse-level coaching.

Bruce is probably
going to get a real rude awakening when he makes it to the show next year (likely as a linebacker), and he discovers the difference between real coaching and middling incompetence.

I'm sure his first few practices will be real eye-openers.

by CAJason80 on Nov 8, 2007 10:35 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

To be fair
at least he's not putting his opponents down when he talks to the media anymore. He's showing respect for his opponent, and giving a fair assessment of what they need to do to win. I consider that an improvement.

Actually I read it like:
"Even if an IDIOT was the coach, it would be the IDOT'S fault because the IDIOT isn't on the field."

-- a way to call your uncle an asshole without "calling" your uncle an asshole... no?

GO BRUIN BLUE.

News for ESPN apologists
This comment by the great Baron Davis has to be shocking news to Lavin apologists at ESPN like Bilas and Vitale. I hate to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but I really believe Lavin was shielded by those guys because they liked seeing UCLA basketball down. You still see the occassional write up that cites how many times Steve-16 took his team to the Sweet-16, blah, blah, blah. How does that "acomplishment" look now when contrasted with a real coach has posted back to back FFs at UCLA? I still feel anger and resentment when I think of Lavin. I have news for ESPN: he's robbing them, too, IMHO. Props to Baron for speaking the truth, and thank heavens for Ben Howland and DG.

by HoosierBruin on Nov 8, 2007 8:14 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Conspiracy theorist?
Hardly. I think there is something to what you just wrote. I always believed Bilas, Digger (UCLA hater),  and Vitale propped up that assclown all those years, because they liked seeing UCLA down. They knew if UCLA got a legit coach, the domination by East Coast hoops powers like Duke, UNC, and Kentucky (ESPN hoops money making programs) would be over.

I just hope some day current batch of UCLA players will speak out the truth on Dorrell.

This is so refreshing to see an athlete speaking so honestly and poignantly. I am so proud of Baron.

ESPN = ACC
ESPN completely pimps out the ACC with their coverage.  I can't count how many boring Duke and UNC games I've been forced to watch over the years because nothing better was on TV.  Even with the increasing strength of Pac-10 basketball in recent years, there's still very little West Coast love.  Maybe this year will trigger something different with the Pac-10 being the toughest conference hands down.

Baron is the man.  I hope he never leaves Golden State.

by hspigskinfan on Nov 8, 2007 9:44 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

ESPN = Eastcoast Sports Network.
it's only a conspiracy if it doesn't end up coming true... and in the case of West Coast Sports denigration/disrespect, that's ESPN's thing.

What about single handedly resurrecting the MLB from the depths of near-extinction with non-stop coverage of "Dinger Central" from '98 - '02 while simultaneously ignoring the swollen biceps, triceps and deltoids of the meat-heads out there hitting them... it's obvious.

GO BRUIN BLUE.

When 1 + 1 does not = 2...
you have to accept that there are alterior motives at play. Not a conspiracy, just a fact.

There is no reason that anyone who knows anything about basketball should believe that Steve Lavin was a good or legitimate coach. To me he will always be a "coach"... always in quotation marks with a strong hint of sarcasm because he was only technically the coach.

In the same way that is takes more than getting someone pregnant to make you a real dad, it also takes more than being paid by Peter Dalis to make you a real coach.

CHP
The name of Coach Howland's predecessor should never, ever be used in the same sentence with the word "coach."  It just isn't right.

Unbelievable
Didn't think it was possible to hold Baron any higher...that really makes my day.  Someone needs to ask him about Lavin's alter ego, KD.

Huge Doors fan
I love the Doors and believe Jim stayed in Sproul Hall for a time, too.  I don't believe he graduated, though.

I think we can go with "Lizard King" for Mr. Mojo Risin and just plain "Lizard" for Lavinoma.

If everyone is to be believed, then
no one ever supported Lavin.

It must have been my imagination that I was ganged upon when I spoke ill of the "fine young coach" beginning about the 2nd year of his tenure.

Not noone
As it happens, my wife sat next to Sean Farnham on a flight last week.  The good girl she is, she mentioned that her loving husband was a lunatic blogger who thinks KD should be fired.  Apparently, Farnham responded with some kind words about Lavo, and him having given Farnham a chance to play at UCLA.

So, there's at least one.

He's just being nice to a stranger
No need to drag Lav-o through the mud to a stranger on a flight.

I knew Sean in college, and trust me, he wasn't exactly a fan back then. He used to regale us with stories about 2 hour lay-up lines that constituted "practice".

Had a chance meeting
with Baron when he was in town for a pre-season game against the Clippers.  Really a down to earth guy. Chatted me up on his grandmother's couch as if we'd known each other forever, even though we'd met maybe 2 minutes earlier. Talked about UCLA quite a bit.

As I was leaving, I asked him about Kevin Love, and he had nothing but glowing responses.  He said he thinks we should win it all this year.  My reply was that we had the right man in charge (which was intended as a slight against the football coach), to which he responded "Absolutely.  You have no idea." I now take that as a dig at CHP or whatever Fox calls him.

He has told a mutual friend on a number of occasions that he left early due in large part to the fact that he felt he wasn't getting any better.  What a shame.

by sausmaf on Nov 8, 2007 7:14 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Too bad
I'm sure Lavin's ears are burning, but because of that idiot Peter Dalis he's got a ton of UCLA $$$ to soothe his wounds. And if that's not enough, he can always hold more weddings and stiff the guests.

by UCLA4Life on Nov 8, 2007 10:02 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Speaking of Lavin...
According to this article in the LAT:
Steve Lavin will be the ESPN2 analyst for UCLA's game Monday at Pauley Pavilion against Youngstown State, marking the first time he has broadcast a game at Pauley since his tenure as coach ended with a 10-19 season in 2003.

Should be a VERY interesting game on Monday.

Note to ESPN
You have to be able to recognize it before you can comment on it.

I wouldn't let that charlatan onto the campus, let alone into the building he disgraced.  DG, how about telling ESPN to replace CHP or none of them will be given any credentials.

We hold all the cards this year.  I think we can tell the smaller guys how things are going to be.  And I would tell them that CHP isn't.
