Mendenhall In The UCLA Picture?

I have no idea how reliable this blog - As The Coach Turns - is. But take it for what its worth:

UCLA

The only update I have is that Chris Peterson is 100% out of consideration. Norm Chow got an interview this morning. Bronco Mendenhall might be gaining favor.

Star-divide

This is how the writer describes his blog:

I spent years working in Major Division 1 athletic departments. I talk to reporters, university officials and boosters daily. I make nothing up and only post what i hear from solid sources. take it or leave it but enjoy the scoop. this is going to be one of the better carousels in quite some time. I wonder where he is getting the Mendenhall scoop? I haven't seen his named mentioned anywhere.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

Hey, the LV Bowl uses the Venetian...
... as one of its official hotels.  Suites are at a DISGUSTINGLY good rate.

Here's a THOUGHT!  Let's pull a page out of the GA Tech playbook and set up some interviews at one of their conference rooms as long as we're in town!

I have been reading through his blog
He apparently called Petrino to Arkansas.

by bluestreet on Dec 12, 2007 7:19 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

The date of his blog was Monday
and he said Chow had interviewed that morning?  Has it been confirmed that Chow has interviewed yet?

by SinnerBoy 99 on Dec 12, 2007 8:30 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Not confirmed
But Deinhart with the Sporting News said he did, and so did Walker, but Mooch and Leach were also expected to interview.  According to Deinhart, Mendenhall is gaining points with the powers that be.

Dienhart
He also made a Mendenhall reference?

by bluestreet on Dec 12, 2007 9:26 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

At least I thought he did
This is my one-stop shop for all coaching rumors.  I swore I saw something on the front page that Mendenhall was gaining points.  Maybe it wasn't Deinhart.  My mistake.

Or maybe I just took what was above
And thought it was on the front page.  Sorry.

For the record, I would welcome Mendenhall to Westwood.

I like Mendenhall, too
If DG picks him, that's fine with me.

I was very impressed with BYU against UCLA.  They were the better team that day thought they lost.  They absolutely knocked the crap out of us.  Very physical, disciplined and well-coached.

I thought back then, BM would be a good choice.

I think we have many good choices, including NC and others.  Whoever DG picks I'm sure will be a huge improvement over KD.  BM for sure.

A monkey
would have been a huge improvement over Lavin. Does that mean we would have to accept a monkey as a head coach?

The whole lets get someone (because anyone is better than KD) is an asinine argument.

bluestreet -- I respectfully suggest...
... you re-read your post and consider the word choice.  I am sure it wasn't intentional, but take a look.

OK
I move to strike the letter "m" from "monkey" and insert "d"

Does that work?

Thanks, b. No offense meant to you...
... but in a world of Streeters, I don't want anyone casting aspersions on our community here.

Mendenhall..after the bowl game?
Wouldn't DG have to wait until after the bowl game to make any overtures to Mendenhall?  I would think it improper to try to recruit your upcoming opponents coach prior to the game.

If you can't beat 'em...
... join 'em... well, have them join US here, or something like that.

Walker vs Mendenhall in the LV Bowl
winner gets the UCLA HC job?

That damn dilemma again:  Which team would you root for?

If it comes down to this, it is a no-brainer.

I Never Root Against The Bruins
Of course, under your scenario, I would probably root for BYU too.  Who says I can't root for both teams?

If DG turns the Vegas bowl
into the "Audition Bowl", then he will make a mockery of the search process.
"This is not a place for just any coach" Dan Guerrero

One might say...
the search process is already a mockery. It seems as though the entire process has not been thought out very well. I think in Guerrero's mind, he didn't make the decision to fire Dorrell until Dec 1st., leaving him very little time to initiate the search process and get a jump on some of the top-tier candidates out there. I think he should have been sending out feelers a couple months ago.

We should be talking about the pros/cons of several well-qualified, proven candidates, but instead we're in full melt-down mode, staring at another 5-year "experiment" square in the face.

I Agree
When DG issued his "interested" comment, which IIRC was after the WSU game, the search should have been initiated at that time. He had to know that victories would be hard to come by -- this was before Dixon went down -- and that he was gonna have to can KD. We are now in Day 10 of the "search" and precious time is being wasted as members of our recruiting class reconsider their futures.

Just relax...for now...
I agree that it would be great to have a great hire by now, but I think we can all agree that hiring a football coach at UCLA is a tricky proposition despite all the advantages that the position offers. I cannot remember how many days went by between Lavinoma getting fired and Howland being hired.

I have to give DG the benefit of the doubt, and here is why: KD did not get fired because his program was out of control, because his players were punks or because he had a meltdown. He was fired because he was not successful enough. In my mind, that means that DG is after a serious hire and not OTJ v2.0. And really, would he have made that call if he didn't have something up his sleeve? We can only hope that is the case, but I am clinging to that hope. Of course, the scary part is what if Walker is his backup plan and that is all we are left with...but as of now, I am still hopeful and DG is 1 for 1 on the list of things we wanted after the season.

Paul Johnson
He's already been hired at Georgia Tech, he would have been great here.  Now we're debating whether we want Chow or Walker or Neuheisel?  Come on, this is U C L A we're talking about, not Podunk U., he should be looking at the best and the brightest in the coaching profession.

Guerrero's secret plan had better be a good one.  If it turns out he's been twiddling his thumbs while the good coaches go other places and we're left with Walker or Chow/Walker, we'll need to fire up dumpguerrero.com.  He farted around too long on firing Dorrell, he should have been fired him after the Utah game, or at the very latest after the Notre Dame game, and we should have hired our new coach already.
