DeWayne Walker

Bruin Blue's thoughts on someone, who some are looking at as the Rasputin of UCLA football. GO BRUINS. -N

Who is this man, and why is he apparently wielding such incomprehensible influence in our athletic department?  He has been here two years as the defensive coordinator, and we know his results.  Solid improvement in the defense last year, little if any improvement this year, even with ten starters returning.  Overall results mixed; some fine efforts, particularly against conventional, pro-style offenses.  Some very poor efforts, mostly against spread offenses.  End result of his tenure--a 13-12 record.  Not all his responsibility, of course, since he wasn't the head coach, and the offense was mostly worse than the defense.  But since football is a team game, a great coordinator is usually able to make some kind of difference in the overall record.  How many esteemed coordinators do you know who were part of a program with a .500 record?

Well, one can argue the relative merits of Mr. Walker as a defensive coordinator.  But how has he managed to parlay this brief record into a position where he is not only a significant candidate for head coach even though he was part of the failed regime, brought in by the head coach who just was fired?  How has he managed to somehow apparently convince the athletic director that his retention at least as defensive coordinator is not only essential, but mandated?  How has he managed to attract supporters so visible that they have been pushing for his promotion since the beginning of the season, and have now started a web site dedicated solely to enhancing his image?  And how has he obtained such a friend in the media as Brian Dohn, who not only is openly supporting his hire, but is seemingly slanting his every comment to help Walker?

Some might say that he has managed this because he is such a great coach, and such an inspiring leader. Others might think that there are other reasons; that much of this has been carefully orchestrated by Walker himself, and that at least some of those who are providing this promotional support for him are hoping to cash in on the access to Walker if he becomes the Bruin coach.  Motives probably are varied, but the whole thing is very unsettling, at least to me.

Here we have a coaching search which  Dan Guerrero is attempting to conduct under the tightest cloak of secrecy.  And yet now we are starting to read all sorts of things about how Walker is or is not approving of a certain coach.  That he would be happy to work with Chow, but not with Brian Kelly.  We are reading that Walker is a candidate for jobs where he never ultimately interviewed.  Every time there is an opening or potential opening on the West Coast, we hear that Walker is a prime candidate.  And now we suddenly read in Dohn's blog that June Jones is very interested in the UCLA job, but that he wants to bring all his assistants, and Guerrero is committed to keeping Walker.  Now, where did Dohn get such information?  Did he make it up?  That's hard to believe.  Certainly Guerrero didn't tell him, nor did Jones or anyone else in his camp.  Can you imagine Jones, on the cusp of the most important game in the history of Hawaii football, with tens of thousands of Islanders caught up in the excitement, not only negotiating with UCLA, but letting this information leak out?  And I seriously doubt that any of Geerrero's very small group assisting him with this search is leaking it, either.  What possible good could it do anyone?

Except--that writing something like this can only hurt the chances of Jones and UCLA ever striking a deal.  As I am writing this, Jones may be forced to utter a public denial, which could very much hurt the entire process, much as Peter Dalis foolishly admitting that he had talked to Rick Pitino essentially killed any chance of Pitino coming here.  So did someone who very much wanted to enhance Walker's image and also his chances, leak it?  Or was it Dohn himself who decided to print something which would do that?  My first reaction when seeing it was incredulity that UCLA could possibly make Walker's retention more important than hiring a top-level coach for this position.  My second was, as the attorneys like to say, cui bono? Who  benefits?  And clearly it is Walker, once again.  If it becomes general knowledge that no head coach candidate can possibly keep or bring in his own defensive coordinator, then that may well eliminate any credible candidate, and leave only Walker, and his personal favorite, Norm Chow, who would presumably stay only a few years, allowing Walker to take over.

Is Walker that clever and that able to manipulate the athletic director and selected media, into allowing him to accomplish his ends?  Is this all my imagination?  Is Dan Guerrero going to finally stand up and hire one of the several proven head coaches who it is now obvious are very interested in this job?  Or has he already promised Walker that he will be retained; and therefore ths search, while perhaps conducted in ostensible good faith, is already predestined to come to an inevitable conclusion--the hiring of Walker, or Chow, with Walker the virtual co-coach?  Rest assured that if the retention of Walker is absolutely a requisite for the new coach, we are very unlikely to be able to hire anyone with a pedigree.  No one would come here when the clear writing on the wall was that Walker was more important that he was; that no matter how poorly Walker might do, or how much he might disagree with Walker. he had no power to fire him; and that Walker would surely keep his own power base here, which might well be used to undermine the head coach's authority.  Whether Walker would do that or not is not the issue (you're welcome to your own opinion on that).  The issue is that this is what any intelligent and successful head coach would think; and that this situation could almost assure that none would come here, leaving (once again) Chow and Walker.

I would like to think that all of this is just my fancy, born out of the uncertainty and anxiety of this search process.  But I would still like someone to explain all of the "leaks" which always favor Walker; the endless articles about how UCLA is a very unappealing job; the comments about how this prospect or that one has been eliminated because of money or personality.  I am now pretty well convinced that if Walker's retention were not a mandate for the new coach, that we could get one of three or four very strong candidates to be our head coach.  If we do not, it is either because the Athletic Director has with absolutely incredible foolishness (I'll use a nice word at this stage), put DeWayne Walker above the relative merits of his coaching prospects; or that a disinformation campaign coming from somewhere has systematically eliminated and discouraged all the good candidates.  It might well be the fodder for some serious investigation--except that this isn't politics, it isn't world affairs; and all we want is for UCLA to hire a really good coach, not suffer through another miserable five to fifteen years with nothing but our anger and our theories.

You've convinced me
Walker should be fired for the leaks and tampering with the coaching search.

Agreed...
If he is responsible for the June Jones leak, he already has undermined DG. How an aspiring AD can tolerate that is beyond me.

This all is almost TOO RIDICULOUS to be true.

Comparisons
I enjoy the coaching debate on this blog.  Thus far, most of the posters at BN have not settled on a definitive HC candidate.  There are several good candidates to choose from, and all have their strengths and weaknesses.  But what IS important, is that we are DEBATING, and analyzing the relative strengths and drawbacks of each candidate.

This is one of the things that bothers me with the Walker supporters (at least based on what I have seen to this point on the wewantwalker website).  At this point, we only hear about his defensive and recruiting capabilities, which is fine, these are valid points to make in any debate.  But I have yet to see a comparison between Walker and some of the other candidates that we've been discussing (I made this point on the wewantwalker site as well).

To the Walker supporters: please show us how Walker stands out from the rest of the crowd.  In your opinion, what makes Walker a better HC candidate than Bronco, or Leach, or any of the other HC candidates?

In order to have a valid debate, we need to debate the strengths and weaknesses of ALL of our prospective HCs, not just the "strengths" of one (Walker).

We Don't Know that DW Has Any Influence
We have heard unsubstantiated rumors from unreliable sources (Dohn amongst them).

No reason to panic -- or to lose faith or trust in DG.

The Choker rumor that had everyone freaked is rotting like dog food left out in the Texas sun.

This too, shall pass.

A nice reasoned look
Thank you.  I'm glad to read a take that doesn't go on full accusation mode, but rather weighs the situation and acknowledges the lack of solid information on all sides.  If DW is scuttling other candidates through leaks to the media, then he doesn't deserve to work here or anywhere really.  But that is just conjecture on our part.  We don't know who is playing who here.

Everyone of our choices so far has a risk factor, and are unknown with respect to benefits.  Even Chow/Walker has the potential to be a good option.  I know some will go into fits for that statement, but it is true.  They MIGHT work, but to make that choice one has to take a much higher risk blindly hoping they step up.  My instinct says Walker will be an above average head coach (not a superstar) in 4-5 years.  He comes across more as a leader than a playcaller.  But that is neither here nor there because we cannot measure or rely on my gut feeling for hiring purposes.

The Athletic Department as well should never use a simple gut feeling about one guy to influence how they search for all candidates.  I am hoping some of these "inside scoops" are BS, because we cannot afford to limit this to a Bob Field list.

I agree with several comments here
  1. If DW is actively meddling in the coaching search to advance his own goals and agendas, he needs to be let go and damn the recruiting consequences.
  2. If DG is allowing DW input on who he will choose to work well with, they both need to go.
  3. I do think that much of the hearsay out there regarding the coaching search is fueled by speculation and not reliable.

Tough situation
I seriously do no think that any decision will be made until after our bowl game or even after all the bowl games. How do you handle the fact that Walker is supposed to coach us in the bowl game, and at the same time announce to him that he's been fired because the new coach is bringing his own staff? There is a serious conflict of interest here. I personally think that the announcement will come either on December 24th or in January 2008. There are just too many moving parts.

And again, if Walker is SO good, why is no other school pursuing him even as a defensive coordinator, let alone head coach?

Well DG was going to let KD coach the LV Bowl
so why would he worry about DW's role as interim head coach for the bowl game if a new HC like Jones was announced?

by SinnerBoy 99 on Dec 14, 2007 12:38 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Precisely because
KD decided NOT to coach the LV Bowl. The conflict lies in the fact that if DW knew he was getting fired before the bowl game he may not follow through with his duties, such as reassuring recruits, etc.

DW and the DC job at UCLA
DW has made progress as a DW at UCLA and that is fine. He should be allowed to keep going, and help keep the recruits from the inner city who he has been given credit for attracting. However, once he steps out of the boundaries of his coaching duties, and becoming political, he risks losing all he has worked for. He best keep his mouth shut and do his job, preparing the team as the interim HC for the bowl game.

I don't have any particular issue with DG consulting with DW on potential HC hires. After all UCLA knows the intricacies of what is involved there, and DW has a perspective on that, maybe more so than DG in some ways.

As to approving HC candidates, DG cannot allow DW to veto or do anything else other than support DG all the way. If June Jones makes sense, I would have a hard time believing that he would have to bring everyone on the staff "or else". If Jones is that way, then that may be a sticking point. If UCLA feels that Jones is worth it, then DW is out, and that is all there is too it.

Coaching idea I hadn't thought of
Has anyone kicked around the name of Appalachian States coach Jerry Moore?  He is going for his third national championship in a row today, and one just has to wonder if he wouldn't be intrigued with the thought of moving up to D-1A.  I hold hope for June Jones coming here though, that Hawaii offense is so fun to watch.  Just my $0.02

That would be a stretch
Definitely great record, but he would be far from his recruiting base, and I think he is a bit old, no? Not that it would mean he wouldn't do a good job, just that it might mean he wouldn't stay very long...

I remember
ESPN interviewed him after the Michigan game and he said he's been offered D-1 jobs before, but he likes App St. and plans on staying there until he retires.

I'd throw it out there, didn't know much about him (age), but just wanted to hear if anyone had heard anything or thought about him.

Balanced, but Still Presumptive
I (for one) really appreciate the well-written, "if/then" tack of the post. It's at least a credible, more respectful take on what we any true blue should think (hope) is not occurring behind the scenes. Still, all any sensible reader is left to conclude is that an active, concerted effort by Dwayne Walker's camp to subvert the hiring process and tip the scales into his favor is underway. But unlike all the hard, statistical proof we had to make a case for Dorrell's dismissal, there isn't a bit of hard evidence to go along with it.

Along with all the great response above, each of which reflect the thoughts and fears of supporters who genuinely want the best for a deserving program, all we still have is... us.

The MAIN problem here is how Dan G. and the folks at Morgan are handling all of this --- in a complete and  perfect vacuum.

The absence of any of the external 'pressure' that is normally exerted by competing narratives (campus spokes people/releases, media stories, etc.) is allowing each and every THEORY put forward to literally EXPLODE into a huge, shapeless and self-confirming set of "facts" that take on lives of their own.

I refresh the BN homepage 3-4 times an hour for almost 2-weeks and the only thing I can honestly pass on to other interested parties is, "I... We still know nothing."

Way to Go, Dan... I guess.

Who benefits from any of this speculation?
If you see a container of some liquid on the kitchen counter and a puddle of that same liquid next to it, you can assume that the container leaked.  But that's not necessarily the only way the liquid got there.  It could have been poured there by someone else.

The "leaks" are ostensibly things that DG has told people.  The "leaks" are ostensibly inside info that DG wants to keep inside.  But no one has verified the truth of anything.  No one from inside the Bruin camp has said anything in public.  No one outside the Bruin camp to who information has been given have said anything.

So did the liquid on the counter come from inside the container or was it dumped there?  I think it's equally likely that someone from the outside is just speculating but doing so in a forum that lends credibility.  Doh! for example.  He has no credibility, but he keeps throwing things out.  What is his benefit?  I don't know, other than being a Walker insider if Walker gets the job.

A quaint item of interest
For reasons long since forgotten, I had among my papers a clipping from an old sports page.  I suspect it was probably from the old L.A. Examiner.  The headline does resonate with our current discussion:  "La Brucherie Given Right To Name Bruin Grid Aides".

My fragment of the page does not contain a date, but on the other side is a small map indicating Monty's army was nearing Hannover and Patton's 3rd army was approaching a town called Neumberg [not the war crimes town].

Incidentally, I am uneasy about having Patton as one of our leaders since he sometimes bends the rules and he is "slick".

The aforementioned article exhibits some of the old-fashioned sports writing style: e.g.  " . . Bert La Brucherie today was scheduled to huddle with Graduate-Manager Bill Ackerman and affix in fine spencerian hand his John Hancock to a duly legal writ making him U.C.L.A.'s head football mentor for the next three sessions  .  .  "

Re: Liquid on the counter
Eddie did it!!!

He was my younger brother, myself and older brothers always blamed him for everything.

I'm sure he did it, he was a sneaky little bastard, wouldn't put it past him.

Right
I see the Doh! (good one! BTW, you know this guys actually sounds just as bad as he writes? I mean, just LIKE Bart!) thing very clearly, too because that's the LEAST mysterious piece of the whole puzzle.

Doh! is looking out for Doh!. He played the role up until days before he knew for sure Toast was toast, then tip-toed across the hallway and hopped in with DW the day he saw a strong suit to iron out. That's why i think he's so quick to jump on every rumor and make it sound original and official: His next meal literally rides on whether or not he's up up our next coaches arse early enough to tell us how it smells.

Ain't that right Brian?

Hey you know how all the UGLY entertainment people go Radio? And all the dumb ones do local news? Well all the rest do the fishwrap thing.

These leaks are really maddening.  In retrospect, perhaps we should have cut Nixon some slack.
