Around SBN: Are The Orioles Bad Or Unlucky With Their Young Pitching?

Ciao, Ciao, Ciao?

Bruin Blue brings the heat. For your part if you haven’t done it, please email Dan Guerrero at dguerrero@athletics.ucla.edu and Chancellor Gene Block at chancellor@conet.ucla.edu, and let them know respectfully and politely that neither CHOKER (Chow + Walker) nor Walker will be acceptable at UCLA. If you are an alum or student, please make sure to indicate your graduating class in your emails. GO BRUINS. -N

That's what it's going to be for me and many other UCLA alumni and fans if Norm Chow ends up being the UCLA head coach. It is not looking good for the good guys, which is all of us who have hoped for and expected that UCLA would finally secure the services of a proven, top-rung head coach, after all the misery and disappointment of the last decade. It is looking good for the usual suspects, which are the Morgan Center bureaucrats who want to save every nickel, and who are afraid of any powerful football coach being able to dictate to them instead of kowtow. It is also looking good for that part of the UCLA fan base which much prefers wishful thinking projection hires to people with a track record, because the former can be imagined as anything you want, where the latter always have a few flaws or losses on the slate. And it is looking good for those national media pundits who love to talk about how UCLA is a basketball school, and how we are too cheap and too unappealing to ever be able to obtain a proven coach.

It's never over until it's over, they say. But too many of us have seen this process before, and do not hold out much hope, given the past. In 2002, Dan Guerrero said that he was looking for someone with head coaching experience to get us into BCS Bowls and win conference championships. His short list then consisted of two mediocre assistant coaches and one guy who had done okay at Oregon State, though never had a winning record there. This time, after five more lousy years, he said that he was definitely looking for a coach with experience, to make us a national power. So far, his short list appears to consist of his own assistant coach, some unknown NFL assistant whose brother is a head coach, another career assistant who may or may not have been offered one head job in 35 years and who has not even interviewed for one in the last three, and a current NFL assistant who was a head coach a few years ago.

I have seen people searching for ants at picnics who have shown more imagination. We can always hope that there is something going on under the radar; but there wasn't last time, and there well may not be this time. If so, then UCLA has "searched" for their own defensive coordinator who desperately covets this job; the aforementioned career assistant who everyone knew months ago wanted this job; an alumnus who has always wanted this job; and some other guy who I think is only in there to make the first three look better in comparison. Now, that's some search. It must have taken all the acumen of Guerrero, the redoubtable Bob Field,, and that high-priced search firm to have unearthed these nuggets.

And what of all the big names that we lovingly rolled around on our tongues for the last few months, when we were hoping against hope that we would get rid of our dreadful head coach and make a fresh and exciting start? Mendenhall, Petersen, Grobe, Leach, Johnson and more? Too expensive for our self-imposed restrictive budget? Just not interested, or was it because our athletic director was not persuasive enough; or was it the demand that the coach accept the mandate of DeWayne Walker being his defensive coordinator, or else no offer? Not someone we were familiar with, because he coaches east of the Mississippi? Not the "right fit" here? Too demanding about how a successful program should be run?

I am pulling my punches somewhat because maybe somehow it will turn out all right. But if it doesn't, believe me, I'm not waiting around for the aftermath. All the excitement from the same people who were ecstatic over Dorrell, thrilled over Lavin. All the idiocy about how because Chow is mad at Pete Carroll, he'll exact some terrible revenge. (Actually, the reverse is likely the case; that Carroll would love for the opportunity to conclusively show that he, not Chow, is the person who won those national titles; and would try to humiliate us on the field at every opportunity. It appears that our inferiority complex in terms of USC may now lead us to trying to use disaffected Trojans to beat them; sort of like USC hiring Henry Bibby was supposed to really stick it to us). All the nonsense about here we go toward national titles, behind our inspiring team of Chow and Walker. And, oh, yes; the inevitable Guerrero press conference.

"Dan, when you said a few weeks ago that you were looking for a proven head coach, did you then change your mind?" "No, I did mean that, but I always said that if the right assistant came along, we would look at him, too; and in Norm Chow...(blah, blah, blah)"

"Dan, did you have any contact with any current head coaches?" "Well, as I said in my opening statement, I will not discuss any contacts I may have had. What is important is that I am sure that we have hired the right coach for UCLA....(blah, blah, blah)"

"Dan, was the keeping of DeWayne Walker made a non-negotiable demand to the coaching candidates?" "I did not make any demands, but of course I am thrilled that DeWayne is going to stay with us, because he is a great young defensive coordinator, and...(blah, blah, blah)"

"Dan, when you look around and see Michigan hiring Rich Rodriguez, Arkansas getting Bobby Petrino, and Georgia Tech securing Paul Johnson, do you think that your hire matches up to those standards?" "Yes, I do. As I have said, it is not about getting the best coach, it is about getting the best coach for UCLA....(blah, blah, blah, blah, blah)."

No, I will skip all of that, because I have heard it all too many times before. Chow would be the fifth straight head football coach hired at UCLA without one day of head coaching experience. DeWayne Walker, who would clearly then be in line to be Chow's successor in four or five years, would be the sixth. And thus, whether it hurts to hear it or not, those people who laugh at UCLA for its inability and unwillingness to hire a big-name, proven coach, and say that it will always be the same in Westwood, will be proven right once again. I have two friends who are big USC fans, and when I told them that it was lkely that we would hire Chow, they both laughed and said that we had done it again. Both of these were actually hoping that we would hire someone credible, because they do not fear us anyway, and wanted the rivalry to at least be more interesting. No one really cares what USC fans think, but it just reflects the general view of good old sanctimonious and cheap UCLA, and the way we always go about things in the end.

Could Chow work out? Well, it depends what one means by that. He could have a winning year or two. Bob Toledo had two 10-2 seasons. Karl Dorrell had one, and averaged seven wins a year. SInce Dorrell was the worst coach imaginable, it is easy to see Chow or an even average coach like Toledo was doing better. But getting us to the level we have all dreamed about? No way. And even at the very best, Chow would only be coaching here for four or five years, anyway. What is the point of that? Then we get Walker, and he would have to be a great coach, or we are where, or worse than where, we started, ten years or so from now. What an absolutely disastrous and inane way to do things. Words are not sufficient to express it, really.

My greatest fear all along was that what is wrong with UCLA is endemic and deeply ingrained, and can't be fixed anytime soon. This same process and these same attitudes have gone on for so long that it becomes hard to imagine us ever proceeding in a different way--the way that Michigan or even Georgia Tech have. If Chow becomes our coach, I will absolutely believe that UCLA is the worst program in the country when it comes to selecting and hiring head coaches. Can you think of any worse? Any that follow a Toledo with a Dorrell, and then a Dorrell with a Chow, and a Chow with an already pre-selected Walker? I certainly can't. So that gives us some perverse mark of distinction, anyway. Well, as I said, it's not completely over. But I cannot sit around and let it happen without expressing my feelings in advance. Is anyone in Westwood willing to listen?

i agree
i just sent my emails off to dg and block...

i hope for the best, but i too fear that the ingrained situation at my alma mater will relegate us to being a perenially 2-3rd tier program yet again....

i hate to say, but i think that the powers that be basically want us to be an academic, liberal, politically correct, ivy-ish powerhouse that is "above" having a great football program

I can't believe what I read
on another msg board (non bruin related) about college coaching changes.  An alum (I know he graduated about 2 years ago at most) was happy with Norm Chow because all he would do is coach to beat SC and he would be perfectly happy with that.

I nearly wanted to puke.  It's amazing how mediocrity has been so seeped into the minds of the populace about football but it is not acceptable for any of the other sports.

by freesia39 on Dec 17, 2007 9:26 AM PST reply actions

UCLA has never been a basketball school.
It has been an everything-but-football school. There is no reason -- none -- why we should be able to win championships in every other sport under the sun except football.

I really don't understand why media pundits don't get that.

by Chandler on Dec 17, 2007 10:35 AM PST reply actions

I don't think that is the right way to say it
Only because the other sports don't have the demands the big two have.  You can say USC is a "everything but basketball school" and that too would be true.  So why hasn't sc ever won a BB title??

I think, IMHO, the reason why UCLA and USC have not won is the same reason for both schools.  Now both are trying to shore up their shortcomings in their respective sports, and time will tell which one was more successful.  That is what makes this hire so important.

by jt4Blue on Dec 17, 2007 1:36 PM PST up reply actions

They have the demands. Just not the spotlight.
And no, you can't say that SUC is an "everything but basketball school." They haven't won 100 championships. They haven't won 19 championships in a single sport, have they?

And SUC once had a strong tradition in basketball, one much more successful than we have been in football.

No assistants or preferences for family
OK, here's my contribution to the letter-writing campaign:

Dear Mr Guerrero,

The list of candidates you've interviewed or scheduled interviews with is not impressive. A defensive coordinator who can't stop the spread. An aging offensive coordinator who is a perennial also-ran for head coaching jobs. A former Bruin quarterback with NCAA problems in his past.

Because Mike Leach shoots his mouth off too much?

Is losing in gray conformity really what UCLA should strive for? Do you really believe Terry Donahue was a good coach? Is that going to be your standard of excellence? At a school that has won more championships than any other, how many top-ten finished did he have? And how many championships?

I count 89 championships in sports other than basketball. How many in football?

It's time to break the mold of mediocrity in football.

Sincerely, etc

Rumors
Too many rumors about. At this point I still put my faith in DG. I have reached the point where it's a very simple matter as a fan and as an alumnus: If he gets us a solid coach I will continue to $upport UCLA. If he doesn't I'm gone, no more UCLA football for me. I'm tired of losing. That's the gun DG faces plain and $imple.

time to mobilize again
much like the fund raising campaign and the dump dorrel website, we need to marshal our forces.

So that the minute the bad news is delivered, we have a large protest outside of the Morgan Center.

we should have protested after the Utah loss. we should have protested after the Notre Dame loss.

We can all see this one coming . . .lets do something about it.

Another depressing entry
Okay, I agree that every Bruin fan should let the AD and Chancellor know our views about Choker. Nobody wants that scenario. I will do my part.

But that's about where our views diverge. I refuse to adopt BB's view that Chow is "likely" to be the head coach. What facts is that conclusion based on? Media reports of rumors?  If media has proven anything in the latest NCAA coaching hires, it's that the media knows very little about what is actually happening. They cannot be relied on for accurate information because the only person who can give them accurate information is not returning their phone calls and not calling press conferences.

I also refuse to give any credence to the speculation in the media that UCLA is interviewing all of these "pop-up to 2nd base" candidates without also interviewing several home-run candidates. As I've stated before, prime candidates who already have head coaching jobs must remain confidential to remain viable. Only Dan knows what's going on with those candidates, and he's not revealing his hand. Which is how it should be.

I urge all Bruins to reject BruinBlue's invitation to make us so depressed that we need a prescription from a shrink just to get out of bed in the morning. Let's reserve depression until we have fact-based reason to be depressed. Remember that BruinBlue, who has an unbelievable knowledge and memory of Bruin sports history, tends to get depressed and negative about things. I recall a general sense of malaise in virtually every posting by Bruin Blue in the past two years. Last year, there was a very sad post about Bruin hoops after we lost to W Va (the loss meant no #1 seed, no final 4, boo hoo, because everyone else would win out (Texas A&M for one). Several this year about how Dorrell was not going to be fired. Several of the same theme or topic as this one--some sort of mediocre hire to replace the previous mediocre hire. The list goes on.

We can avoid depression by remembering that Dan did right by us in firing Dorrell and saying that he was looking for several things in a head coach that we all agreed with. Dan has never wavered from the position that experience and integrity are paramount. We can remember that he gave us those things in virtually every hiring decision he has made, save the experience factor with Karl Dorrell. Everything else we've read about this search is speculation and posturing by beat writers who have proven in the past to have shoddy sources.

Keep your collective chin up; Dan is conducting this search in the correct way--behind closed doors and without revealing his hand. I am confident that the hire will warrant excitement, not malaise, just like I was confident that 12/3 would be the end of the Dorrell era. DG cannot fire Dorrell, call his hiring a mistake, and then go out and do it all over again? The answer is, he can't and he won't. No way. It's too important to his career.

Do you still believe in Santa Claus?
Because the blind faith for Guerrero is starting to rival that of many 5-year olds for a certain jolly, overweight elf this time of year.

I would love to believe that DG is conducting some clandestine, behind-the-scenes, intense search and interview process to reel in a real home run hire. I would love to believe that every reporter in the country hasn't picked up on this, and that the only interviewees (the "Feeble Four") being reported is part of some sort of clever smokescreen to protect that homerun hire from the intense media scrutiny during bowl season and give DG a tactical advantage at the negotiating table.

Yeah right.

However, logic, experience, and yes, a little cynicism is telling me that one of the "Feeble Four" is going to be our next head coach. Kinda like the 5 year-old will feel in about a half dozen years from now.

by godblesstyus95 on Dec 17, 2007 12:30 PM PST up reply actions

Is Santa Claus not real?
Okay, maybe not.

You accuse me of blind faith in Guerrero, but you seem to trust media reports of the rumors swirling around the search. Is that not blind faith?

Ask yourself who's been more reliable with information in the past several months--Dan Guerrero or the UCLA beat writers?

Ask yourself where the media is getting their information--Dan Guerrero, his close advisors, or someone else? It most assuredly is not from Guerrero because he is not speaking about any specifics to anyone. It is highly unlikely that it is coming from Guerrero's closest advisors, who must be on board with the sensitive nature of the search or they wouldn't be close advisors (or to put it another way, if one of Guerrero's closest advisors is leaking the information, that person will no longer be a close advisor). So, if not from Guerrero or his inner circle, who would care to leak "information" about this coaching search? Persons with agendas, that's who. Agendas that are different from the AD's agenda (different in the very least because the ones with an agenda are trying to conduct the search in public instead of in private as Guerrero wishes to do). How can we trust information of such persons when they clearly have an agenda? I don't trust them. I don't trust Dohn. I don't have blind faith in these "reports" or in any "unnamed sources" quoted in them.

Which brings me to your second point, that you would "love to believe that DG is conducting a clandestine, behind-the-scenes, intense search and interview process."  I posit that this is precisely what is happening. Everything Guerrero has said and not said indicates that this search is being conducted with the utmost secrecy. What information do you have that Guerrero is doing anything but conducting a search in private? He has never been quoted and in his one public statement did not say anything specific.

See, my position is anything but blind faith. It is logic applied to the realities of a 21st century coaching search, and supported by all of Guerrero's statements (and lack thereof) and the results of other coaching searches (which were replete with the inaccurate leaks prior to the hiring announcement). Unlike many others, I have not blindly assumed that Guerrero is acting in the same manner as his predecessor or that the beat writers are privy to confidential information.

At the same time, I'm not encouraging anyone to sit quietly while this happens. Please write to Guerrero and Block to make sure they know we're paying attention.

Doom and Gloom versus Give Dan A Chance
Thanks BruinsRule for your perspective. I am with you on this one. We need to give Guerrero the benefit of the doubt on this one. To fret over a bunch of rumors is wasted energy. This has an eerily similar feel to the events leading up to Dorrell's dismissal. It is also important to note, that DG has not done anything wrong that we know of, except maybe throw John Harbaugh into the mix. Then again, do we really know any of the circumstances surrounding a Harbaugh interview or any of the rumored candidates for that matter?

I heard on ESPN radio over the weekend that the rumors surrounding Les Miles and Michigan were the primary reason that Miles stayed at LSU. The Miles to Michigan rumors were peaking just as his team was going into the SEC Championship game. The reporter on ESPN made it sound like Miles would have gone to Michigan if there was a way to keep the distraction away from his team as they finished up the season.

by Bruin77 on Dec 17, 2007 1:13 PM PST up reply actions

Agreed.
As well I agree with Bruins Rule.

Keeping the pressure on does not mean getting mad at DG for basically no reason (since no one really knows what's going on behind the scenes).

I read some of the posts around here (not necessarily from Bruin Blue), and its like people are already trying to get DG fired, and he hasn't even made a hire yet!

DG has presided well over UCLA Athletics.  He brought us Howland, Savage, and # 100.  And he fired KD.  Yes, he hired KD, but some will say KD wasn't even his hire really.  SO I say--So far so good.

Even if DG does hire someone most on Bruins Nation don't like, I wouldn't call for his resignation.  I would (will) give his guy a chance.  Remember, DG--and not anyone here--is in the best position to know who the best candidate is for UCLA.

by rfirpo on Dec 17, 2007 2:38 PM PST up reply actions

Yes but
DG might know who the best candidate is, but that doesn't mean he has enough ammo to get that person hired. We are giving him the benefit of the doubt, but some candidates are just not right, right from the get-go. And he HAS to know, and let others know, that hiring certain candidates will only prolong misery.

by tasser10 on Dec 17, 2007 3:09 PM PST up reply actions

True.
I just don't think DG should necessarily be ridiculed if, god forbid, he hires the best available candidate after some higher-up person puts up too many road-blocks on DG's best people. (and I'm not saying you'll ridicule, I mean that more generally).

All signs were that DG had his opening sights on Petersen, which tells me he started the search in the right place.  However, if he tried but couldn't land a Petersen-esqe coach, how do we evaluate DG knowing that we'll never know everything about who we tried for and failed to get. There aren't infinite candidates out there, after all.

Also, I think its an interesting question whether the athletic department owes the fans an explanation as to why it didn't hire certain people.  Taking Leach as an example, it appears he is not an option despite his interest.  Does DG owe us an explanation if he hires someone lesser than Leach?  I'm not so sure.  And if it isn't explained, what do we do?  Do we berate DG and call for his head even though he personally might have wanted Leach?  Or do we give him the benefit of the doubt?  All good questions if you ask me.

by rfirpo on Dec 17, 2007 5:51 PM PST up reply actions

What should happen
if DG does not come up with an equivalent to Leach (i.e., someone who meets the criteria DG himself defined) as a result of "road Blocks", he should do the same honorable thing we asked Karl Dorrell to do - step down.  From what I've seen of DG I suspect he would do just that if indeed the Chancellor's office leads us down the same sad path.

by East Coast Bruin on Dec 17, 2007 6:06 PM PST up reply actions

Exactly right
If three wealthy and influential alumni said that their idiot sons should be HC, OC and DC, and there would be a megabucks contribution when those hires took place, what would DG do?  He would tell the three wealthy and influential alunmi to take a hike.

But if Bob "Out In Left" Field or Gene Block(head) insisted that these three guys absolutely positively had to be hired, then DG would have no alternative but to resign.

The principle is the same.  If Dan wants to do what's best for UCLA, that means hiring a coach who will save UCLA from the grip of the Tidy-Bowl man.  And if he's not allowed to do it by some ivory tower academic pinhead, then he should call a press conference, name a whole bunch of names, and resign.

by Fox 71 on Dec 17, 2007 7:20 PM PST up reply actions

Theoretically I like this.
But in reality, I completely disagree.

It presupposes that everyone works (or should work) for UCLA without any reference to their individual careers, ambitions, and desires.  If that were true, you might get your hypothetical result, but its not.

If, god forbid, DG isn't able to hire his guy because of higher ups, he should hire the best guy he can within his parameters, and we should hold the higher ups accountable.  DG should not "resign" because some people on BN think its the honorable thing to do even though HE PERSONALLY will be making the greatest sacrafice of his career.  Thankfully, DG is smarter than that.

Well...

I wouldn't call his posts depressing (except the one you mention which followed the loss to W Va). It's more a call to arms, if you will. I think it worthwhile to let it be known that the CHOKER combo will simply not be acceptable. And that is all we can do at this point. I choose to have a little faith in DG, mostly for my own sanity. For others, they feel like they are watching the same movie, which, 3/4 of the way through, looks exactly like the other flops they have seen before. Yet there is still hope that the ending will be different this time. I think it will be and that we will have a good if not grat hire.

Not a single person had a clue that Petrino would go to Arkansas, or that Rodriguez would go to Michigan. That is what I am banking on. Some things just need to be kept quiet.

Two-Timers
Hey, this is OT but while I was doing some research on some stuff to put in my e-mail to Guererro, I noted that UCLA had a hand in thrashing some important two-timers in the 70s: In 1972, UCLA beat Bob Devaney's two-time defending national champion Nebraska (nice write-up over on Pepper Rodgers' site) and they upset Woody Hayes' Ohio State in the 1976 Rose Bowl costing Hayes a national championship. On that team was two-time Heisman Trophy winner, Archie Griffin.
Couldn't have happened to a nicer pair of people.

Wonder if we'll ever again have a program that'll earn that type of respect?

My Letter
Dear Dan,

I wanted to let you know that I was pleased to see that you realized the need for a change in the direction of the football program at UCLA after this last year.  UCLA is an institution of excellence and should be looking for the same results from our football program as we expect from other excellent sports programs at the University.

I wish you the best in your search for a new football coach and was encouraged by your remarks after releasing Mr. Dorrell that you would be looking for a coach that will bring UCLA back into the Pac-10 championship picture, BCS contention and the National Title picture.

A proven head coach at the D-1 level is the correct route to go in rebuilding the UCLA program.   You have done a great job in other programs at UCLA (Howland, Savage) and I look forward to a similar result here.

I was planning on cancelling my season tickets after this season if Coach Dorrell was kept on as head coach another year.  I will await to see your announcement on the new head coach before making a decision for this next year.

Please do not disappoint by hiring a coach with no former head coaching experience.  Coach Walker is not an option and neither is Norm Chow.

Sincerely,

David Martin

Dohn Posted This On His Blog
This sound reasonable. While some may want to say it is just Dohn explaining away why he doesn't know what is happening with the search, I would like to believe it shows that Guerrero is very sensitive for the need to conduct personnel matters outside the spotlight of the fans' and the MSM's attention.
None of the football coaching candidates have made any public statement, not even to beat writers in the cities covering those teams.
Why?
UCLA AD Dan Guerrero is telling the guys not to talk to the media about the search, who is interviewed, or how the interviews are going, according to sources.

Of course there is one downside.  We may not end up with the best coach, just the coach that is best at keeping a secret.

MSM is Doing Their Job
The media is doing what they are suppose to do, report what they are hearing, as long as they have sufficient confidence in the source. Unfortunately, we live in a society that has a tendency to believe it if it is in print or on television. There is so much subtext to this story that I doubt anyone but Dan Guerrero truly knows what is happening. I bet there are even some behind the scenes, unsolicited involvement from at least three influential and wealthy alumni that even Dan is not aware of.

For every possible, and even some impossible, candidate I can think of a scenario why they would make statements to the press that they have not been approached or are not interested in the job. We may never know everyone Guerrero talked to. We probably won't even hear about the offers that were rejected.

I have no clue where this search will end up. If I take Guerrero at his word Chow, Walker and Harbuagh are non-starters (no head coach experience, let alone "successful" head coaching experience). That leaves Skippy and since he has some baggage, I am guessing he is a long shot. Therefore, my guess (wish) is the next coach may be a name we have heard, but one that is currently not in the forefront of the rumor mill. Hopefully, I am not jinxing this either, but I think June Jones or Bronco Mendenhall are the most likely targets, with Skippy getting the job if a deal can't be made with either of the other two.

MSM with an agenda
I don't really have a problem with the reporters who just report what they are hearing about interviews and contacts. My problem is with reporters who pose as columnists, constantly injecting their own opinions into their reports in order to push one candidate or another. That is dishonest, particularly when their interests seem to be purely selfish.

Dear Dan and Gene:
Gentlemen:

I know that I speak for many when I say that I have faith that, as in the case of the basketball and football programs, you will indeed find the BEST man to resurrect our football team and return it to its rightful prominence on the national stage.  Despite the fact that there are only two other major universities (SMU and West Virginia) that have not yet hired successors to replace their respective head coach vacancies, and such programs as Michigan, Georgia Tech and others have already upgraded with very encouraging hires, I know that you are working to secure a person of similar caliber for UCLA . . . we deserve the best.

A Happy Medium
Since the common thread in all this is concern over how Chancellor Block will weigh into the final outcome (and already has, apparently), then perhaps the recommended approach should be to bombard him with all forms of communication.

Personally, since I think Guerrero is looking much broader and wider than media reports indicate my message to Block is "take Dan's recommendation" and screw all the other input you may be getting from other sources.  While those other sources may have cash, so do we in the form of ticket & other purchases.

And by the way, with 3x kids all under 10 in the house it's my JOB to believe in Santa.
