Kragthorpe a Possibility?
This coming from TJ Simers so take it with a grain of salt, but this makes me beyond happy so I'm going to cling to this rumor above all others.
The way I hear it, UCLA Athletic Director Dan Guerrero is on the road again, looking for somebody, anybody, willing to take the football job, talking now to Steve Kragthorpe...Last season I was hyping up Kragthorpe, who was leading an extremely successful Tulsa team to yet another successful season. After the season, Kragthorpe left Tulsa to take over for the nomad Bobby Petrino. He went an extremely disappointing 6-6 despite returning a number of starters and being in most pre-season top 5's. His stock plummeted and some Louisville fans were even calling for his head, however Kragthorpe was never really given a fair chance.
Kragthorpe was forced to retain nearly all of Petrino's staff and the staff never bought into Kragthorpe, constantly undermining his authority. Without the support of the staff, there was no way the players would get behind Kragthorpe either. IMO, last season was an impossible situation for Kragthorpe and if he is willing to bolt for Westwood, I say we jump on it.
Here is what I wrote on Kragthorpe on October 24 of 2006:
The 41 year old Tulsa head coach is my favorite candidate. Kragthorpe recieved the head coaching job at Tulsa in 2003 and led the Hurricanes to a bowl appearence and an 8-5 record, the school's first winning record since 1991. That season he won WAC Coach of the Year, FWAA/Scripps First Year Coach of the Year Award, was 3rd place for AP Coach of the Year and was a finalist for other coaching awards. Kragthorpe led Tulsa to the Conference USA Championship last year in the school's first season in the conference and won the Liberty Bowl over Fresno State to complete a 9-4 season. In Kragthorpe has won more games in his first 3 seasons at Tulsa than the school had won in its previous 7 combined. Kragthorpe is a very good offensive coach. His teams have scored over 30 points in 23 games through his first 3 seasons and he has averaged over 39 points per game in his 21 victories. Kragthorpe also served as quarterbacks coach for the Buffalo Bills in both 2001 and 2002. Kragthorpe was also the offensive coordinator at Texas A&M for 3 seasons where the Aggies went 35-16. He was with the Aggies when the Bruins beat A&M in the 1998 Cotton Bowl. Kragthorpe first began coaching as a graduate assistant with Oregon State and has been the OC at North Texas where his offensive led the conference in scoring. He is an accomplished offensive coach with numerous connections in Texas and the entire south and has NFL connections as well as head coaching experience and success. The guy has just about everything we could want in a coach, from youth (42 years old), position coach experience (6 years as a QB coach), coordinator experience (7 years as an OC) and head coaching experience (5 years). As I said earlier, Kragthorpe wasn't given a fair shot at Louisville with so many assistants forced upon him (take a note DG) so that could be the reason he wants to leave Louisville. He entertainied an offer from SMU and the Lousiville SID even said there was a 50-50 chance he could be at SMU in 2008 so it seems obvious he isn't happy with his situation at Louisville. He is only getting paid $1.1 million now so our refusal to spend big shouldn't be an issue although I can't find what the buyout is. In conclusion, Kragthorpe is now in my personal 1st tier and may be my new/old favorite. I'll sleep on it and make that decision in the morning.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

A Rumor is A Rumor
But, what I like about this rumor is that, whether true or not, it is spreading the story of doom -- you cannot force a staff on a head coach.
I truly hope we interview Kragthorpe, both because he is a tier 1 coach AND because I think it will put another hit on the Choker scenario -- if there is a Choker scenario which is also a rumor.

Not bad...
(1) He coached at Northern Arizona with KD, and on the Lousiville bio for him, KD has an endorsement of him. Don't know how SK would feel taking over KD's old job.
(2) He supposedly got a raw deal with Lousiville in being forced to take on remaining assistants... and what would he have to do here?
(3) Look at his overall record as HC -- doesn't it look an AWFUL lot like KD's overall at around 35-28 or so???

Not my First Tier Pick in 2007
Unfortunatley for me, my horse in the 2007 race for HC was Paul Johnson...now gone. My second choice is and will be Petersen although that ain't realistic and my third choice is Mike Leach, then Mendenhall. I would put Kragthorpe ahead of June Jones. Any of these guys, with their own staff and recruits, would make UCLA a relevant name in college football again...
The "pretenders" not fit to carry any of these guys luggage, IMO, are tricky Ricky, the DeWayne, Choker or any of the other current crop of cast-off's, retread's and rejects who I feel would promise us only more year's of mediocrity.

You missed the point
That's not the reliability that warrants a lot of discussion. But if you think it does, then I heard from a source I can't name that Kragthorpe is very very interested in the UCLA job. I'm sorry, but I can't reveal my source. But it's good. My credibility is at stake, I know. I have a very good source. If I'm wrong, I'll give up my job at the local Louisville TV station. (OK, if pressed, the source is my wife, who didn't actually say anything, but probably would have if I had asked, and if she had ever heard of Kragthorpe.)
My rumor is just as valid as that TV station's. Yet everyone takes that rumor and runs with it. I hereby volunteer to be the judge and rule on the evidentiary objections. OK - the objection to the story about Kragthorpe is sustained - it's hearsay. Move on, counsel.

Maybe I'm just used to more
There is a report in the times about DG being interested in kragthorpe. So the linked article is quoting from another article, not from any of the principals.
Then unnamed officials said that Kragthorpe had declined to talk with UCLA. Kragthorpe didn't say a word, but some unnamed person said something.
Here's a verbatim copy of a very interesting paragraph: "L.A. Times columnist T.J. Simers cited no sources, but said that he had been hearing that 'Guerrero is on the road again ... talking now to Steve Kragthorpe.'" So it is Simers (a great journalist) talking about what he has heard.
Then the article identifies someone by name, a Louisville football spokesman Rocco Gasparro. He says that UCLA's search committee had contacted Kragthorpe three separate times, "but that Kragthorpe had told him he wasn't interested each time." So it's not DG talking to anyone, it's some search committee. And the "him" in the "Kragthorpe told him" is not identified. So is the him this unnamed person on the search committee, or is this him Mr. Gasparro.
Here's the next paragraph verbatim: "Gasparro said that to the best of his knowledge, Guerrero hadn't spoken directly to Kragthorpe or asked for permission to do so from U of L athletic director Tom Jurich." This makes it clear to me that DG has not been involved in any of this. The "to the best of his knowledge" language is the kind of weasley language that is not used in real life, but only in depositions or in this sort of crappy press release. (My favorite depo answer, and read this very slowly, because that's how witnesses say it: "I do not recall, recollect, or remember, ... at this time.")
Next is a reference to a press conference in November in which Kragthorpe denies interest in SMU or any other job. How many times have we heard this? And I'm not even talking about Petrino.
I guess my legal background is showing. This press release simply says nothing. No judge would ever let a jury hear this if the issue were whether or not DG had contacted Kragthorpe directly, or whether Kragthorpe had any interest in UCLA. It simply says nothing. And to have the anchor to the whole thing be a rumor circulated by Simers, the fishwrap's version of Doh!, shows the unreliability and untrustworthiness of this sort of baloney.

And I should add that I don't particularly
So far, we have only heard one statement from DG and he gave no hint of who he talked to in the past or who he plans to talk to in the future.
These kinds of rumors and press releases about rumors just can't be taken seriously.
