Dohn: Hire Walker For the Soundbites
It's always been a little mystifying to me why Dohn shills for Walker so blatantly. I'm no gilbert, but I assume that what he's been doing of late violates all sorts of journalistic rules and standards. So, to pimp DeWayne so hard, you'd think the two guys were related or frat brothers or something. Since, as far as I know, that isn't the case, I found Doh!n's latest explanation of why DyNoMite was his choice for the HC job interesting:
I always thought DeWayne Walker should be the guy because he is bright, he loves to compete, he relates well to the players and he has a son their age, he wants to be in SoCal, he understands the intricacies involved in recruiting to UCLA and he has proven he can hire a very good defensive staff, because he's done that. And he has a great personality to give sound bites and make people feel interested during an interview.Riiight. Let's break this down. UCLA should hire Walker because:
- He's bright. Thank goodness that we are insisting on that! As I'm sure none of the other candidates qualify as such.
- He loves to compete. Again, a quality almost completely absent from most people involved in major athletics. Wow, that's a scarce trait that we should snap up pronto.
- He relates well to the players and has a son their age. Awesome. I relate well to players. I also know many people that age. In fact, I once was that age. Not to mention my nieces and nephews that age. Sign me up!
- He understands the intricacies involved in recruiting to UCLA. Yeap, just ask Walker's brother; DyNoMite is the only guy in town that could possibly recruit for UCLA. Jason, at What's Bruin, Dawg?, disposed of this one in rather amusing fashion recently:
To get to a similar point in UCLA's history, you have to go ALL THE WAY BACK TO....uh, the 2002 class- which was ranked....uh...7th.
So, DeWayne Walker's most awesomest recruiting class in the history of the ultraverse is the best recruiting class we've had....since...uh...Karl Dorrell was hired. But apparently no one else can do this. Well, except Bob Toledo. And he's at Tulane, so forget hiring him back.
- He can hire a good assistant staff. Even taking that as true, congratu-f'n-lations DeWayne. You maybe had some role in hiring a couple assistant coaches. I hope you listed this at the top of your resume.
... And finally, above all:
- He has a great personality to give sound bites and make people feel interested during an interview. Jesus Brian. I know you just want to keep your access. And I know you and DeWayne are BFF's, but can't you come up with something better than "he makes my job easier"? For Christ sake. And this guy from Rutgers is doing all he can to manipulate UCLA's coaching search.
I'm sure Doh!n is getting at-a-boys for generating hits to his blog. But what he's been doing is really a shame. You'd think his editors would be concerned about this sort of thing. Perhaps not, but it's good to know that at least some people are on to him.
GO BRUINS.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

Yes, this really violates journalistic standards
It wasn't that long ago that I thought very highly of Dohn. But Dohn fell victim to something that happens to many writers who cover one team for a long time. They become friends with the coaches, players and other people in the program, and form an emotional attachment to them which kills objectivity.
Since Menelaus did mention me, I decided to pull up the Society of Professional Journalists' Code of Ethics and point out parts of the code Dohn doesn't seem to be following:
--Avoid conflicts of interest, real or perceived.
Naming a coach you'd prefer is a huge conflict of interest, no matter who it is, when you're a beat writer for a team and covering the coaching search story. That's obvious.
-- Be vigilant and courageous about holding those with power accountable
He clearly didn't do that with Dorrell.
-- Identify sources whenever feasible. The public is entitled to as much information as possible on sources' reliability.
-- Always question sources' motives before promising anonymity. Clarify conditions attached to any promise made in exchange for information. Keep promises.
Obviously, reporters need to use anonymous sources sometimes to report news. But Dohn seems to do this more than the other UCLA reporters.
-- Distinguish between advocacy and news reporting. Analysis and commentary should be labeled and not misrepresent fact or context.
Dohn seems to mix commentary and reporting on his blog. Most readers should be able to tell the difference, but some won't.
I read Dohn often, but probably not as closely as a lot of you here. You'd probably know more specifics about how he's broken these ethical guidelines than I have.
Full disclosure: I'm guilty of this too. I was Gary Adams' biggest fan at UCLA, and never wanted to see him retire. Then I covered the baseball team last year and realized how wrong I was. I still say Adams is one of the best human beings I have ever met, but he wasn't as good at winning baseball games as he should've been. Sometimes, you learn the hard way. But you would think a professional reporter should've learned that by now.

Walker offered DC position at UW
I did not hear that report and I have heard NO reports verifying this offer or that DWW has accepted it...as of 3:55pm...

I heard the report
I would feel a little more relieved about this process if we can get some concrete information on how the DyNoMite is out of the running for the big job.

To be fair

His blog is still journalism
Other blogs are different. I don't claim to be a journalist anymore on mine. Dohn still does, because that's what he is employed to do.

Exactly
We are unabashedly partisan and don't pretend to be objective when it comes to issues related to UCLA athletics. If we have a caused based on numbers/stats. we push it. Dohn on the other hand is supposed to be an impartial/objective reporter. Big difference.

Wow, what a tough group
As to citations, I have been studying this issue for years. I have analyzed all the data there is in the entire world. I have personally interviewed witnesses. It is an undeniable fact that the justsc named itself after the most famous losers in history. And how did they lose? By being incredible dupes and falling for the most obvious ploy known to man. Wnen their incredible blunder with the stupid horse was revealed, the entire city gasped in amazement. In short, from an historical perspective, the trOJans sucked.
And in modern times, when all the rich fat cats decided to invest in a school to send their children to, what did they choose for a name? They are the trOJans. They named themselves after a rubber. Is that stupid or what? Here we are - the justsc douchebags. Or the justsc dildoes. Really. Does that show a lot of intelligence? Naming your team after a condom, which is used for ... well, never mind. That kind of thinking, by any standard, illustrates a massive suck.
But we're not done. We have a team nickname, named after a condom. Are we done? Have we done enough? No, of course not. We'll adopt a mascot. Something to ride half way around the crapaseum (they stopped riding it in front of the Bruin student section several decades ago). Will we choose something to show how smart we are? No, of course not. Let's use the classic symbol of stupidity - the horse. That's the same horse that was used to beat our namesake years ago. Once again, we have illustrated a thought process that sucks.
That's all the time we have today, students. We'll continue again next week. But here's one little tidbit. One of justsc's administrators was very happy with their bball coach, Bob Boyd, after a pretty nice start of something like 11-0, so he said he thought Boyd should be coach of the year even if he didn't win any more games. So Boyd proceeded to run the table in the Pac-8, going 0-14.
Homework: See if you can spell trOJan without OJ.
I believe the conclusion is simple and obvious - justsc sucks.

He Tries to Straddle an Imaginary Line
And, one should not be covering stories in which one is sleeping with the subject of the story.
Remember the stink when a good reporter got involved with the mayor.
No, I'm not saying Dohn is actually sleeping with DW -- but he seems much to close to DW and his family to be an objective reporter.
And, unlike BN, Dohn's blog is a part of a newspaper and carries tht paper's reputation with it.
I find it interesting that Streeter no longer has a blog. My guess is that the fishwrap pulled it because he was so irresponsible.
I'm not sure Dohn has been any more responsible.
