Bowl Schedule Effect on Hiring Timetable?

I realize that with KD being let go barely two days ago, a lot of us have been anxious to find out who DG is talking to, who's in L.A. for possible interviews, etc.

Some are also worried about the recent reports that the AD's office still hasn't picked a recruiting firm yet.

Have faith, everybody.  Have faith.

This may be a fool's faith, but I am not fully convinced that Petersen out of Boise State would NOT entertain a competitive offer from us.

Why do I say this? Because his season is not over yet.

KD's season may have reached its inevitable early conclusion, but pretty much EVERY GUY we here at the Nation are looking/ hoping/ praying for is, well, pretty busy at the moment.

1)  Paul Johnson, Head Coach at Navy?
*Preparing for Poinsettia Bowl, December 20, 2007.*

2)  Brian Kelly, Head Coach at Cincinnati?
*Preparing for Papa John's Bowl, December 22, 2007.*

3)  Bronco Mendenhall, Head Coach at BYU?
*Preparing for Las Vegas Bowl, December 22, 2007.*

4)  Chris Petersen, Head Coach at Boise State?
*Preparing for Hawaii Bowl, December 23, 2007.*

5)  Jim Grobe, Head Coach at Wake Forest?
*Preparing for Meineke Bowl, December 29, 2007.*

6)  Mike Leach, Head Coach at Texas Tech?
*Preparing for Gator Bowl, January 1, 2007.*

So, what can we take from this information?

(a)  It is highly unlikely that ANY actively working head coach would come out and publicly say that they're going to interview with US when there's still a Bowl Game to be played, not unless they REALLY want to risk their entire booster population skewering them online and in phone calls to their respective ADs.

(b)  A lot of the guys talked about here seem like pretty good candidates, as they've all led their teams to Bowl games.

(c)  Say it takes 2-3 weeks for DG to get a recruiting firm going, narrow candidates, and conduct initial interviews and intel for the candidates. Guess what? 3 weeks from now, 4 of these guys could conceivably communicate with us and NOT have a Bowl Game to worry about...

(d)  There is a (bleep) load of Bowl Games floating around out there, damn.

Have faith, BruinsNation.

HAVE FAITH.

Do any or all of these guys have agents?
If so, then I wonder if there have been any discussions with agents.  But as you pointed out it makes no difference anyway, because none of the people you listed would say anything at all until their bowl is concluded.

This is
a good reminder for everyone to be patient.  In the meantime, the speculation is fun and harmless.

Of course, I did have a nightcap with three wealthy and influential alumni last night who told me....

Our Patience Will Hopefully Be Rewarded
I agree.  Too soon to expect an answer, but still fun to discuss.  Sure beats all those "will Dorrell be fired" posts.  I also agree with M, the only way a decision will be announed before the end of the bowl season is if we settle for some assisant coach.

That's what happened five years ago
And look how that turned out.

A lot of other vacancies out there
as well, which may prolong the process as candidates weigh all their options.

Your theory regarding current head coaches is absolutely correct as the only prominent hirings thus far are Sherman (assistant coach) at A&M, Pelini (assistant coach) at Nebraska, and Nutt (fired from Arkansas) to Ole Miss. To my knowledge, no current head coaches have been hired on elsewhere as of yet.

And remember, we want a current head coach, not some assistant or reject.

brian kelly
Brian Kelly didn't have a problem leaving Central Michigan last year right before the bowl game to coach Cincinnati in the International Bowl.  I don't understand, if we're considering Kelly, why aren't we considering Franchione?

by drummersix on Dec 5, 2007 4:23 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Franchione?
No one who has followed A&M for the last several years would suggest Coach Fran.

Here in Texas, he's public enemy number 1 to a big chunk of the state (A&M grads).

He is Dorrellian. And, he had a little scandal with a private newsletter he sold wealthy people -- it disclosed inside program information like injuries.

You are joking, right?

Amen to that
My old man asked me if his name had come up at all.  When I told him about the private newsletter, my old man wisely never mentioned him again.

brian kelly
i know all about franchione.  but they feel the same about brian kelly in mt. pleasant michigan. yeah, he never made a newsletter that got him in to trouble, but that guy will skip town so fast.  i say he is like franchione, because for a dollar raise on a contract, he'll jump to his next opportunity, similar to coach fran going from bama to A&M. if we hire kelly, i will be extremely upset and worried about the future of the program

I agree with Nestor about Petersen
Though I'm trying to accept that Petersen's not interested, there's a part in me that hopes there is still a chance...

I mean for a man with high integrity like Petersen (who professes about succeeding in life above football), if DG rolled out the red carpet, who knows what can happen...

Imagine DG giving Petersen a tour of campus and talking about our university's commitment to excellence balanced with high academic standards and talking about our school's history with Jackie Robinson, Al Scates, and of course John Wooden.  He can show Petersen how he can be a part of this pantheon of legends winning the RIGHT way and doing things with class.  Petersen is the perfect antidote to Cheatey Petey.

I hope DG really courts Petersen the right way (which I'm sure he will) and who knows...DG needs to convey that as much as we want to win, there are things we absolutely will not compromise and there things we value above and beyond the sport.  I have a feeling that Petersen, who seems to have that humble, small-town kinda persona is reluctant of fitting in with "glamourous" UCLA and Los Angeles.  But as we ALL know, UCLA is MUCH MUCH more than that, and if that is conveyed in a meaningful way, I'm sure Petersen will at least consider coming here.

Agreed, mostly
I still prefer Paul Johnson over Chris Petersen
but, whomever we decide to pursue, a call from John Wooden can't hurt.
