funny realization
In this commercial John Wooden sounds just like the voice actor for the "helper voice" in the game Civilization IV.  Anyone else know what I'm talking about? :P

by ranelar on Feb 23, 2007 6:53 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Yes, he does sound a little like the Civ. IV guy
but I think it's actually Leonard Nimoy from Star Trek fame.

by PeterUCLA on Feb 23, 2007 10:20 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

That is fantastic
Especially love the stick in of 13-9 in the video.   Hope Coach gets some good residuals for the ad.  Heaven knows he earned 'em.

eric mcneal
That clip was genius!!!

by rick.2012 on Feb 23, 2007 9:48 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

good commercial
but what exactly does 13-9 have to do with championships?

by greatgymnasticsschool on Feb 23, 2007 11:06 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

It's a nice jab at SUC
Also, while it may have nothing to do with UCLA's championships, ask any SUCster if that game had any implications on their run at another football championship.

by bornagainbruin on Feb 23, 2007 11:37 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Mr. BB added last night
That UCLA is also where championship hopes are destroyed.

A long and prosperous life for Eric McNeal!

by bruinbabe2000 on Feb 23, 2007 11:41 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I get that.
But this commercial isn't about USC.  It's about UCLA and the number of championships UCLA has.  Is 7-6 with a horrendous loss in a bad bowl game a championship?  This attitude drives me crazy.  And the idea the ruining USC's run at ANOTHER national championship is great enough to run in this commercial is sad.

by greatgymnasticsschool on Feb 23, 2007 2:42 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with Greatgymnastics
If the clip had been of the 1954 Football team, then fine.  But using the word "Championship" in the same sentence with "football" is just wrong.

by Fox 71 on Feb 23, 2007 3:12 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Just a thought
Maybe the clip from the SUC game is intended to suggest that Eric McNeal played like a champion in that game.

No one tops me for their disgust with Dorrell and his acceptance of mediocrity.  I gouged both of my eyes out during the FSU bowl game.

But the commercial's message is that "champions" are made at UCLA...and one could say that Eric played like a champion that day.

That's my take.

by Barnes2JJ on Feb 23, 2007 3:18 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Don't think so, Barnes
the big 99 makes it pretty clear what this commercial is talking about.

by greatgymnasticsschool on Feb 23, 2007 3:50 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Stop being such a pessimist & nitpicker
"Champions made here" could mean either teams or individuals and can refer to past or future (hopefully) championships.

It's about the attitude, tradition, history, and hopes for our program.

Enough said.

by PeterUCLA on Feb 24, 2007 8:40 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Just awesome
I'd take Coach doing voiceover anyone. Morgan Freeman ... who?! :)

Love it.

Awesome
Is that the trophy shop next to John O'Groats?

by Westwood Wizard on Feb 23, 2007 8:05 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

so many clips
There are so many clips that could be added to this commercial...makes you realize what an AWESOME athletic program we have.

This is a great ad, and thank goodness the jeep girl is gone, I was briefly hoping that car was on its way to slam into the PCH cliffs...then I went back to loving my fellow Bruin.

by tasser10 on Feb 23, 2007 8:27 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

The jeep girl was all right
It was that skater dude, that got on my nerve.

by bluestreet on Feb 23, 2007 8:29 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Jeep girl was alright...
skater guy was mildly bothersome, but the theatre girl was terrible. I can't even type out how she says "theatre".

by pocho on Feb 23, 2007 8:36 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

My only criticism
Is that it does not hint at UCLA's academic reputation, and focuses only on athletics. As one of the preeminnent academic/athletic institutions in the country, I think the commercial does a bit of a disservice to UCLA's bread and butter -- the bright and talented faculty and students.

Other than that, 100x better than the home video they were using before.

by Ajax on Feb 23, 2007 8:45 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

I agree with that
But I was quite happy.  Any sight or sound of Coach warms my heart.

by bruinbabe2000 on Feb 23, 2007 9:02 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

In fairness
our last commercial didn't really do that either. It tried, but the way they conveyed the message ("Owned by the people of California"...YUCK) seemed detrimental to that cause.

I don't think leaving out the academics is that big of a deal, because I think that reputation is already well established. I've seen plenty of commercials from schools that are pretty much just football factories, like Oklahoma, and the entire SEC, that try and portray their academics as something to be proud of. The schools that are good at both (and right now I can only think of us and Stanford on that list), are more free to do as they please. And this commercial is far superior to Stanford's. Wow, you guys can spell. Keep up the good work.

by Tydides on Feb 23, 2007 11:10 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

No criticism from me
I love it.  It isn't supposed to be about anything but athletics and championships, and who better to be the focal point of that than the Coach.

(How lucky we were and are to be connected even in this tenuous way as fans to the Coach.)

by Fox 71 on Feb 23, 2007 8:56 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Many of these school promotional clips are run on
television during games and usually showcase both the academic and athletic accomplishments of the institution.

by PeterUCLA on Feb 23, 2007 10:21 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Yep, so....
what's your point?  This is ONE commerical, not THE commercial to represent UCLA.  I'm sure next time there's a break during a Spelling Bee or Academic Decathlon, we'll highlight our stellar scholastic reputation too.

Hmm, to recap: the last ad was too "trendy", this one is too "sporty"!?  Well I, for one, thought it was awesome! Just about wore out the rewind button on the DVR!

Some of the comments I've seen remind me of one of the 'Needler' (the couple that should be divorced) sketches from SNL, where the husband and wife are insatiable twits who are constantly bickering: "that's probably because someone kept complaining that their STEAK tasted too 'steak-y'".

Appropriate forum (you know, a GAME), great content...seems pretty "swell" to me! GO BRUINS!

Nowhere in my post do I say it isn't a good ad.
In fact, I've defended it elsewhere in this thread.

Unveiling
I'm sure many of you are already aware of this, but this commercial was on the scoreboard yesterday during a TV timeout, and of course, the crowd immediately broke out into another 2-minute standing O for Coach.  Good times!

coliseum
How much would it cost to run a 30-second clip on the video board over there? This should definitely be played on December 1!!!

I'm posting twice on this one
This commercial is simply great.  I agree, it doesn't mention UCLA's great academics, but that's ok--it doesn't have to be all things to all people.  It's great on its own.
Finally, somebody got it right!

i love it so much
when they played it at pauley last night people went bat shit

I was at the game last night
That commercial kicked all kinds of ass!

Coach's voice, it was excellent. Seeing Coach Wooden in front of Royce at the end made it probably the best spot over.

C'mon everyone........
Can't we all just get along....

It's just a commercial.........no need to disect it within an inch of it's life.

Either you liked it or you didn't.

Sorry Arty
After four years of UCLA English classes, I can't watch any movie, show, or commercial without breaking it down.

And the bottom line
You gotta like anything that has Coach Wooden in it.

OK
You get a pass.

by artybruin on Feb 23, 2007 6:26 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

You're right, it's just a commercial...
So let's put in a clip of us playing hockey and riding rodeo while we're at it.  Sure we don't have championships at that but so what?  And didn't UCLA just win the poker national championship, too?  Hell, thrown it in!

Football is in there because it's the highest profile sport, not because it deserves or should be.

We have enough to be proud of, why be fraudulent?    Why ADVERTISE that we're fraudulent.

it's just a commercial.

Seriously man
save your energy for something more productive. Nit-picking over 3 seconds worth of football footage  is just not worth it.

If USC did this...
You would all be having a FIELD day.

This is a big deal.  It's typical of the bigger problem.

by greatgymnasticsschool on Feb 24, 2007 8:11 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

I don't think the patronizing is necessary,
he just disagrees with many here.  Doesn't mean he roots for USC.  Aren't we trying to keep people coming to BN?

I actually agree with greatgymasticsschool--were this a USC commerical with a similar type football clip, we'd put it to JustSC with abandon.  That said, personally I love the video, and the football clip--i think that's great too.  A nice addition to watching the Bruins on tv.

by rfirpo on Feb 24, 2007 9:13 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Oooooh
Nice one!  Really creative!  Want to talk about the FACTS at hand about UCLA?  Or want to continue to think that ONE win in football somehow changes reality?

by greatgymnasticsschool on Feb 24, 2007 8:51 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

dude
you just need to calm down. I actually agree with you. I like the McPick shot in the commerical but I am not sure why KD is in it.

That said ... I don't think anything is wrong with enjoying the commercial. It's really well done and a definite upgrade over the last one. That's something to cheer about.

If you don't like it. That's fine. Duly noted. Now move on.

by Nestor on Feb 24, 2007 12:35 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

It's not just KD...
Did you miss Terry Donahue?  When did he win a national championship?  Oh, it doesn't matter, I'm sure many of them played like champions at one moment or another.

Look, the sentiment behind the commercial is awesome, much better than the crap it replaced.  It could be a GREAT commercial. (start by not spending 50% of the total time in the trophy shop... we get it)

But for all the talk around here about "attitude and tradition and history and pride and right and wrong" let's discuss this list.

Volleyball, Track and Field, Golf, Softball, Soccer...  All are absent because our perennially lower-mid-tier, once kind of won a championship sorta 53 years ago, is featured.  Hell, there's more baseball than any championship team. (And there's about 15 frames of women's sports total).

All I'm saying is that maybe if the Football team had to earn their time and accolades, they would.    And maybe if the fans were a little less happy about one win over USC, and expected/demanded that outcome more...  it would happen more.

by greatgymnasticsschool on Feb 24, 2007 2:17 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Are you really still bitching about this?
This is pathetic.

I'm sure that's worked into the preseason speeches for each of our sports programs. "The amount of airtime you will get in a 30 second commercial is directly correlated to the success you have this season."

At first I could kind of see your point, but now I really don't care whether you like it or not. McPick rules, deal with it.

by Tydides on Feb 24, 2007 5:50 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

No, Tydides...
It's not just about the commercial... it's the whole attitude around Football.  This is just ANOTHER example of mediocrity being celebrated.

You just put on your 13-9 shirt and strap in for another great season of 7-6 Bruin Football!

by greatgymnasticsschool on Feb 25, 2007 6:26 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Dude
You need to shut up now. We get it. But you, on the other hand, do not get advertising. Take your Debbie Downer stuff somewhere else please. Don't whine to us, we can't fire KD.

by tasser10 on Feb 26, 2007 8:47 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

USC is irrelevent
What do they have? Football? Not for very much longer. Academics? Pffft...may as well be talking about University of South Carolina.

Who cares what the 'Jans think.
