"One More Year" (Postgame Thread)

The Bruins wrapped up their first undefeated home season in decades, erasing memories of the meltdown in Palo Alto and clinching at least a share of the Pac 10 title. It wasn't senior day, because we have no seniors, but despite another solid performance by the entire Bruin team, the story of the day was this man:

Photo by Jed Jacobsohn/Getty Images Sport

I'll admit it, watching Arron Afflalo in perhaps his last postgame interview in Pauley and watching him walk back into the locker room for maybe the last time, I got choked up. McPick style choked up. In much the same way that McPick burying the trOJans is etched into my memory, I don't think I'll be able to forget the end of this game if Afflalo does decide to go pro after this year.

I was too young to remember Ed kissing the floor. For those of us who are currently students, Arron Afflalo is our Ed O'Bannon, and if this is the last time we get to see him in Pauley, I'm gonna miss him a whole hell of a lot. AA is a legend in my book, no matter what happens the rest of this season.

GO BRUINS!

got the groove back
and it starts with defense. we are getting back to form on defense and that is what will take us far.  we have 8 players rotating solidly.  mata is coming on strong. shipp is coming on strong.  two wins up North and doesnt matter what happens in the conference tourney, we will have the #1 seed. i trust we will continue to build. we have overachieved a little this season in my opinion (25-3, undefeated at Pauley), and yet we can do so so much more. we are looking good!

Florida
Lost again today.

Do you still think they deserve a #1 seed??

by artybruin on Feb 24, 2007 7:26 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i think they should
they have been winning convincingly throughout most of the season. their two most recent losses are away games. although i think they might get bumped down to a 2 seed just because of the timing of these losses.

and as much as i hate to see AA leave, he really deserves to go pro whether we win it all or not this year. he's worked too hard to pass up the chance especially since he's graduating early.

Go Bruins!

yea, they do
Plus, I don't really know who you'd put in their place.

What I want to know is if the clueless voters will still give them #1 votes on Monday's polls. My guess is they'll get at least one in each.

LOOKING AHEAD ...
It was a good game, but not a great one. We should have been ahead by 10 at the half. Our first half FG percent (both 2s & 3s) was only 42.9% and our FT's were only 3 of 6. The final result was decisive, but to me, it demonstrated some of the same issues that we have had all season -- particularly in the first half.

Looking to the tournament, I think we could have trouble with a team that is both big and physical. Stanford is big, but they don't have the experience or the depth to be a problem at this point -- particularly after they got our dander up by surprising us at Palo Alto. What Stanford demonstrated in the first game is that we are vulnerable in the tournament to a more seasoned team that has size and strength. While LSU made Florida look terrible today, does anyone recall the Florida game last year?

WSU is another problematic team for us with some of the same strengths as Stanford. Let's see if we can blowout WSU in the upcoming game, and how we do in the PAC-10 tourney. We don't seem to strike fear in the eyes of our opponents, even though the results this season have been good.

You're Splitting Hairs
The difference at halftime is insignificant. Stanford hit a lot of contested 3's in the first half. Your analysis of the game doesn't give Stanford any credit.

As for the Florida game, it's a bit late in the season to assume this Bruins team is the exact same team as last year. But if we make it to the championship game AND we play Florida AND somehow the game is in Indianapolis AND coach wooden is rushed to the hospital, I might be able to use your comparison.

by alcor805 on Feb 24, 2007 8:46 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

What do you mean?
We won't even have a chance unless we first blowout Washington State in Pullman.

(Yes, that's sarcasm ;))

SC Dad has a point
If we face a team with two 7-footers, depth, experience, and that can go on streaks shooting lights out from distance, the Bruins will most definitely be vulnerable to a defeat.

Keen insight.  Keep 'em coming.

I guess it comes down
to naming a NCAA division I team, this year, that has two 7 footers, depth, experience, and that can go on streaks shooting lights out from the distance.  There isn't one.  I see an even playing field especially with Mata coming on.

Afflalo
the ultimate Ben Ball warrior, Howland's 1st recruit, and the cornerstone and pillar to our resurgence back to the elite of college basketball.

Arron: Your hard work, committment, sportsmanship, talent, dedication, and leadership are an inspiration to all current and future Bruin student athletes. As a die hard fan of Bruin athletics, I am eternally grateful you chose to wear those 4 letters on your chest more than 3 years ago.

Thank you, Arron, for three wonderful years. As much as I would love for you stay another year, I completely understand that you are ready to take it to the next level. No matter what happens, you will always be one of my favorite Bruins.

That's a big If
So we first have to find a team that has 2 seven footers that can play; then their wing players  have go unconscious from the 3 point line? Well, any team in the country would lose if one team had 2 unstoppable 7 footers and shooters that wouldn't miss any 3's!

And, aren't we a little nitpicking when we say we shot 3 of 6 from the free throw line?  And only shot 42 percent in the first half?
Weren't we leading at halftime? And didn't we win this game?

Florida has been exposed by Vanderbilt and LSU, who even knows if they will go all the the way to the title game. It's a little premature to talk about the National Championship right now. But Florida is not unstoppable by any means!

You also need to take in consideration we have the best coach in the country! Give our guys credit. With no seniors on this team having played the toughest schedule in the country we can beat any team! I don't want to be premature and say we are going to win it all, but we have as good of a chance as Florida, North Carolina, Ohio State, Wisconsin, or Kanas does of winning it this year; and who knows it might not be any of the teams I mentioned, including us.

Abby
I don't know if your reply was partially directed towards me, but just to clarify, I was being facetious with my remarks.

by insomniacslounge on Feb 25, 2007 12:07 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

sorry I forgot to add
I just want to beat WSU I don't care if we blow them out or not. I don't believe that we will blow them out. They are a great team and it will be a close game and we could lose.

Now why should teams fear us, we aren't the Detroit Pistons back in the late 80's and early 90's. We don't have dirty players or trash talkers; or anyone that is averaging 30 points per game. Teams also always bring their A games against us, they get up to play UCLA. I think that has to a lot to do with us having such slow starts or other teams being more fired up in the beginning of the game than we are. THey want to show that they can play hang with UCLA.

While it is mortal, unlike Wooden's undefeated...
teams, this is a great team that easily could have gone undefeated this year if not for some learning experiences, and no DC for one road game.  Of course there were a few games that could have been lost too, but who's counting?  Undefeated at home is pretty impressive, especially in this league.  But the one thing that is still scary, at least for other teams, is that Coach Howland hasn't even hit his stride in terms of recruiting yet.  This is a team still rising from the ashes of Lavin's destruction.  This team is not led by seniors who have been in Howland's system 4 or more years.  Our big experienced leader is a junior.  Our floor general is a sophomore.  Our highest profile player (in terms of recruiting) is still in highschool.  But the great thing in my mind is that they are all great people on top of it all.  It is such a good time to be a Bruin (bball) fan.  I can't wait to see where the program can go from here.

Don't ever want to hear his name mentioned, ever.
You gave me the creeps when you mentioned whatyoumightdcallit in your post.  I would just as soon erase him totally from our memory.

Never mind those consecutive sweet sixteen appearances, the intermittently inexplicable upsets of Stanford, Arizona and Kansas teams.  Only Dalis would buy it and fortunately he left.  Enough said.

Without mentioning any names --
The fishwrap quotes Mike Warren

"I think Coach Howland has really turned the program around. He's brought a new spirit, a whole different attitude and defensive scheme that has not been seen since Jim Harrick,"

Gee, who was here between Harrick and Howland?

I won't mention his name.

However, I will say it drives me nuts when what's his name is the cliche commentator during a game and the announcer calls him "coach". Coach? If he were a coach, he'd be coaching. Does anyone think anyone else will be so stupid as to hire the gel headed cliche as a coach?

You'll live to see sunrise ( just kidding )
Whatyoumightcallit really has no business  coaching.  I hate to rehash his nauseatingly immature cheerleading, bizarre body language on the sidelines, all done to prevail upon Dalis & Young that he was the right person for Pauley post Harrick's shenanigans.

He is persona non grata this side of the great continental divide, period.

Forget Florida
Those Gators are on a downward slide at a critical juncture right now.  They may exit early at the tourney also.  I like our team's chance this year.  Absent any major surprise at the West regional, we should be at the Final Four in Atlanta.  Aaron is the one taking us back to the " Promised Land " .  But first thing first, let's get the two Washington schools out of the way next week.

Two problems to fix after today's game.  Capitalize on every steal and turnover.  Minimize. length of the court long passes.  Use the shotclock against every team like we did at Tucson.

Florida 2007 = Arkansas 1995
Arkansas won the championship in 1994, then made it to the final in 1995 against our Bruins.  It was pretty much the same team as the previous year, and everyone assumed they would beat us, including Duke Vitale.  But they ran into the unstoppable spirit.  And Ed O'Bannon shut them all up with a jumper from the baseline.

Last year...
Florida just got hot at the right time.  We did too, but this year shows that they aren't doing the same, and we are.  Fine by me, they showed how classless they are last year, and I would be very happy to see an early exit for them this year.

There was a Senior Day...
At the campout:

This is a rap from a member of the Den who is not graduating this year.  It' a sendoff to the graduating Den seniors.  The hardcore seniors who camp out nearly every game. Not sure how long this tradition has gone on though...

Thank God.  That was terrible.

Listening to that guy is agony
Did he write that really bad spoken word poem(I won't even credit him by calling it rap) to scare people off? Maybe he got there late and wanted to annoy people enough to make them go home so he could get a better seat.

One thing that would make this video better would be a bb gun. Or because this is 06-07 a taser.

A win/win scenario for all:
AA leads the Bruins to a national title this year.  Then he could choose to return for a sure repeat with Love on the team, or to turn pro.

by bluegold on Feb 25, 2007 10:00 AM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If we play Florida
we'll probably have a huge advantage.  We'll be angry about losing last year, and they'll think they can beat us easily.  If you look at how we played in our second games against Oregon and Stanford theres no reason to be afraid of Florida.

by SuperBruinMan on Feb 25, 2007 2:13 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

with JS we are a tougher team
it was Brewster (sp?) that killed us last year. he got those extra rebounds, the steals and points that kept us from coming back so many times.  He would have to guard JS and not AA. Josh is the better matchup defensively because he brings a bigger body to muscle Brewster. I really think that will make a big difference if we play them again. I hope we do.

by DumpDorrell on Feb 25, 2007 5:00 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

A rematch in our favor
If we do play those Gators again, it would be a rematch reminiscent of that second title game between Duke and UNLV the year after UNLV crushed Duke.  Tarkanian's squad never looked the same.

Our team this year has more firepower, players that can score inside and outside.  Billy Donovan's hairstyle reminds us of Westwood's public enemy #1, whatyoumightcallit.  Let's vanquish Donovan too.
